Ned Sublette I was on Gotham Gal's website this morning using th LIJIT Search Engine http://gothamgal.blogs.com/ I wanted to re read a book by one of my favorite authors and he is also a great musician ! Yes I found it! Viva Ritmo Latino Cuba and Its Music: From the First Drums to the Mambo by Ned Sublette "This entertaining history of Cuba and its music begins with the collision of Spain and Africa and continues through the era of Miguelito Valdés, Arsenio Rodríguez, Benny Moré, and Pérez Prado. It offers a behind-the-scenes examination of music from a Cuban point of view, unearthing surprising, provocative connections and making a case for Cuba as fundamental to the evolution of music in the New World. Revealed are how the music of black slaves transformed 16th-century Europe, how the claves appeared, and how Cuban music influenced ragtime, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Music lovers will follow this journey from Andalucía, the Congo, the Calabar, Dahomey, and Yorubaland via Cuba to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Saint-Domingue, New Orleans, New York, and Miami. The music is placed in a historical context that considers the complexities of the slave trade; Cuba's relationship to the United States; its revolutionary political traditions; the music of Santería, Palo, Abakuá, Vodú, and much more. Cuba and its Music is an ambitious project whose repercussions in a different genre might be on a par with those of Buena Vista. Grounded on frequent trips to the island and an extensive bibliography, this book by Ned Sublette is a first for an English-reading public: a didactic and accessible steer through part of Cuba's turbulent history and its music, whose parameters embrace cultural anthropology, sociology, politics, and history, as well as musicology and music. I also get a lot of great Latin Music from NPR http://www.ritmolatino.org/ Lijit is great search engine with excellent Tech Support it is great add for any web site http://www.lijit.com/about N

General Semantics thus shares some concerns with psychology but some do not consider it specifically as a therapeutic system, evaluating it as more focused on enhancing the abilities of normal individuals than curing pathology. Image via CrunchBase Hook-If you are attempting to brand read Steve Ruble he and the folks at Edelman do it for a living and they do it with GUSTO ! I think the greatest site on the Internet to start branding your self is http://www.squidoo.com/ Squidoo is a community website based in Irvington, N.Y. that allows users to create pages (called lenses) for subjects of interest. Lenses are interactive, and can contain Flickr photos, Google maps, blogs, eBay auctions, YouTube videos, and other links. Squidoo is in the top 500 most visited sites in the world, and in the top 250 most viewed in the United States.[1] It has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to charity. Development on Squidoo started in 2005, launching a beta testing period in October of that year.[2] The launch team consisted of Seth Godin, his book editor Megan Casey, former Fast Company employee Heath Row, Corey Brown, and Gil Hildebrand, Jr. Upon its announcement, Seth Godin, Squidoo's CEO, released a free ebook titled "Everyone's an Expert."[3] The ebook outlines the difference between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0, and then goes on to detail lenses and their effectiveness as a "nowblog." The site came out of beta testing two months later and reached 100,000 lenses within the first six months. It now has more than 700,000 lenses. Squidoo owes its name to the squid, which has eyes containing large lenses, analogous to Squidoo's lenses which as Godin notes, "provide a view on the world."[4] It ends in "oo" since tech companies with two "o"s in their name - Google, Yahoo!, Godin's own Yoyodyne - have all been a success.[4]Key people Seth Godin, Founder. It was noted on Fred Wilson's site-http://www.avc.com/ Barry Graubert writes the excellent Content Matters blog and he's got an interview with me up there today. Fred Wilson Here is one question and my answer: CM: Historically, as the economy comes out of recession, it creates transformation and change. Which segments have the potential for transformation in an eventual recovery? FW: Every industry that is based on knowledge or information or some other form of non-physical matter (atoms vs bits) is going to fundamentally transform and this downturn will be the darwinian forcing function. Think about energy and power systems, banking, media, education. They all have that aspect to them Barry Graubart has spent the past 20 years applying technology to content to develop high value business-to-business information products. Barry today serves as Vice President, Product Strategy & Business Development for Alacra, a leading content technology company, where his focus is on eCommerce and social media applications. You can act, and there will be reaction. That's never in question. Thus, doing something always affects change, but how much change and in what way altered and to what effect? These are the questions. The only way to know the degree to which your actions are effective is to define or articulate "effective" and interpret results in light of this articulation. In other words, you must have a goal to know whether you are making progress. Moreover, you need defined objectives to track and manage actions and investments. In terms of Web Marketing, your basic goal and objectives determine how you use the Web, what you will build and manage, and more. Your website, for example, will be built around these objectives. The site will be built to facilitate actions that work toward the attaining of your objectives. When looking at your web analytics, you basically looking at two things: traffic and behavior. In terms of traffic, you want to increase the amount of good traffic (the right people in the right place). In terms of the behavior, you want to function as a tool that enables the visitor to pursue you further. More specifically with conversion tracking, there are two major considerations, the number of opportunities for conversion (traffic) and the number of successful conversions (behavior).

Initial thoughts on the Palin nomination (Scripting News) - 0 views

  •
Initial thoughts on the Palin nomination Friday, August 29, 2008 by Dave Winer. 1. It certainly was creative and thought-stimulating.   2. However... it shows McCain thought he was losing to Obama and needed to do something bold that would stir things up. And he certainly did that.  3. However... no matter how well they vetted her, even if nothing terrible shows up, she has no experience in the world, and virtually no experience in the United States. What does she know about American cities? Our industries and businesses? Economic issues? Balance of trade? The military? Katrina? He picked her because she was the governor from the state that was furthest away from Washington. Point made. But despite what the Republicans say about her qualifications, she has no grounding to run this country. Might as well pick someone from another country.   4. They say she's as qualified as Obama, but that's wrong. They should get to know Obama's background and how intelligent and studious and thoughtful he is. Read his books. He's incredibly well educated, and I'm sorry running a successful campaign for the Democratic nomination for President is much more experience than being the governor of a very small state with no budget problems (they have a built-in surplus because of tax revenue from their natural resources and a very small population to spread it out over -- Alaska is a very strange state, unlike any of the other 49).

MarshalSandler.com » Flipping abundance and scarity - 0 views

Flipping abundance and scarity I think it's dangerous and often fatal to put free on top of an existing business model. Things fall apart. People look at the free revolution and say, "oh, that could never work. If I gave x, y or z away for free, I'd fail." They're right. They will fail... If they keep the model the same and just give away stuff for free. The way you win is by reinventing the model itself. So, for example, lululemon doing giant free yoga classes in New York. The more people come, the more clothes they'll sell... it'll become a movement. Or Crossfit, publishing their insane work outs online. The more people do them, the better the scarce part (private coaching, etc.) does. We spent a generation believing certain parts of our business needed to be scarce and that advertising and other interruption should be abundant. Part of the pitch of free is that when advertising goes away, you need to make something else abundant in order to gain attention. Then, and only then, will you be able to sell something that's naturally scarce. This is an uncomfortable flip to make, because the stuff you've been charging for feels like it should be charged for, and the new scarcity is often difficult to find. But, especially in the digital world, this is happening, and faster than ever.

The truth is, as people are increasingly empowered by social media, marketers are losing control. In a lot of ways these trends are great news for the world because more customers are getting the real story and finding out from each other which products and services have real value, and which ones don't. But where does this leave the people who've build honest businesses being experts in push strategies that used to work? A lot of them are scratching their heads wondering "How the hell are we going to make money now?"

Now it is has been made even better. I've learned a thing or two from the users of Checkmate, listened to the feature requests and I've decided it is time to release Checkmate 2.0. Checkmate 2.0 is built on the original version of Checkmate, but could almost be considered a completely new theme. The interface has gotten a huge and much needed update. The layout is still simple and clean but now is more polished and modern. Customizing the CSS and the look of theme is even better, the entire site was coded with the end user customizing the site in mind.

Richard Edelman - 6 A.M.: How To Push Back Constructively - 0 views

  •
« A Different Davos | Main February 13, 2009 How To Push Back Constructively It has been a strange week for the business community on both sides of the Atlantic. Big bankers from the US and the UK were called before their legislators, who were venting public frustration over huge pay packages, constipated lending and opaque use of government bailout funds. It is important that companies learn how to play a new game, to dance the tango with a newly aggressive partner, namely government. Here are the four steps to a more equal relationship with the big-footed dancing companion: 1. Explanation and Contrition-No forward movement is possible in this relationship without an examination of the past. Companies should be willing to acknowledge misjudgment, and yes, even error. There should be lessons learned, policies amended, personnel changed in the process. The more specific the information, the more likely it is to be credible. For example, "We anticipated that the maximum decline in housing price would be 20% but the decline has proven to be 35%." There must also be a clear statement of contrition, not a fuzzy "once in a lifetime market circumstances". Executives should acknowledge personal failure and apologize to shareholders and employees alike. 2. Appreciation for Change from Shareholder to Stakeholder-CEOs must change from a uni-polar world of investors and analysts to a broader definition of audiences that puts employees first in line in the need to know. There should be a recognition of implication for society in any action, from reduction in force to decision to relocate production to another facility. 3. Presentation of Long Term Vision-The company needs to solicit buy-in for its future direction. Rather than keeping strategy as a matter for the board of directors alone, the CEO should share the vision with its broader publics. This will enable its new investor (government) to have the public support for a long-term view instead of b

Waterfield -http://www.sfbags.com/ I'm so grateful to Jared Goralnick of SET Consulting who turned me on to the Waterfield bags on a recent visit to my town. I bought the VertiGo bag with a Mambo laptop sleeve case to go inside, and I bought the shoulder straps with D rings. What's really cool about the experience was that the people from Waterfield emailed me shortly after the order to say that they were missing a piece of material and that the order would be delayed by a day or two. I wrote back and thanked them, and then they wrote back and chatted me up a bit. I loved it. I felt like they really cared who was buyin

Image byhttp://www.prestonlee.com/archives/67 via CrunchBase I am not sure any of the old media could ever pull off the a digital newsroom ! There are certain content creators like Chris Brogan Seth Godin Steve Rubel Dave Winer who could show them how, but will they understand ! I don't think so ! Most of the Old Media could not find there way with Google Earth ! Attached is a copy of tabbloid Seth Godin talks about how to create a newspaper tabbloid_2009-01-10_0901-seth-2-now I was born in 1936 and sadly can get more infrmation from Twitter than any of the local media in Michigan, unless you wnat information you might find in A publication in the United States by this name was officially The National Police Gazette, although commonly referred to as simply the Police Gazette. It was founded in 1845 by George Wilkes, a journalist and sometime transcontinental railroad booster.[1] The editor for most of the 19th century was Richard K. Fox, an immigrant from Ireland. Ostensibly devoted to matters of interest to the police, it was more often a tabloid-like publication, with lurid coverage of murders, Wild West outlaws, and sport. I like Louis Gray's take on the new forms of Digital Media ! First I must explain my personal position I was kicked off Friend Feed for posting a Re-blog about Edelman Digital in the Wrong Room no warning one of their employees was complaining about my post's to another employee not to me ! Another from the UK sent me a Tweet saying I was a spammer ! My account was then without addressing the issue to me deleted , this to me is ok I am still alive but this is not a tactfull way of building a business ! Obviously only Geeks who communicate with machines not people are FriendFeeds Market ! Now I am 72 years old and am sure have more business and marketing experience in my little red wagon then the folks at Friend Feed ! They have built an excellent visual application and developed a following but they have and it is obvious no marketing direction ! Understand they have right to pick and acknowledge a client base but to survive their application needs a Universal Appeal us the unwashed not a Snob Appeal !
