MarshalSandler.com is a playground of ideas, introductions, and synergies. Marshal exhibits a blogging style that is less about tamping out his thoughts and more about the juggling, rearranging, juxtaposing, and syndicating of the content of other people and companies - a communications cubism of sorts. There's no room for crap, but there is plenty of room for friendly people with interesting ideas. Marshal's day is the search for new technologies, new ideas, new relationships, and new things to curse happily about. So, participate. Cut bait.

Richard Edelman - 6 A.M.: The Graduates - 0 views

May 29, 2009 The Graduates I am in the midst of graduation sensation, with my eldest to receive her college diploma next Thursday and my middle child having earned her high school diploma just a week ago. We entertained thirteen college students at our home last weekend; I could now write a new script for "Survivor; The Parents" based on that experience. I am very pleased that my college graduate will begin her career at Edelman Chicago in the fall; Generation Three begins! Given the terrible job market for college and professional school graduates, I thought it appropriate to offer some advice on how to approach the employment search in PR. First, consider working initially as an intern. Most of our offices are utilizing summer interns. Some of these jobs will become full time in the fall, given normal employee turnover. We have the interns do real work, from preparing press lists to writing press materials. Second, digital is your fastest way in the door and to the top. All PR firms are rapidly adapting their core offerings, as the game shifts away from sole reliance on media relations. Show us how you're blogging, tweeting, utilizing video, participating with communities, advancing issues. If you can demonstrate how you can advise on social media, then you have immediate value. We operate a facebook site solely for potential interns, and a twitter, facebook, widget and a LinkedIn site for all pros so they can participate with the Edelman community.

« US Media Goes Global | Main August 8, 2008 Business Up North I was interviewed on Tuesday by Amanda Lang, anchor woman for the Squeeze Play show on Business News Network in Canada. The segment will air tonight and will be posted on Monday on the BNN web site. Here is what I learned about the network in the course of my pre-interview make-up session (must admit it is fun asking journalists a few questions about their employers, even while the pancake and eye-liner is being applied): 1) CTV, the largest network in Canada, began Business News Network in 1999 to compete with CNBC. It was initially a joint venture with CNN, now completely owned by CTV. At present BNN's ratings in Canada average about 20,000 viewers during the day and 40,000 viewers during prime time. Most of the major financial institutions will have both BNN and CNBC playing on the trading floor.

Americans' trust in corporations plummets - South Florida Business Journal: - 0 views

  • Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 3:43pm EST  |  Modified: Wednesday, January 28, 2009, 12:00am Americans’ trust in corporations plummets South Florida Business Journal Print Email Reprints RSS Feeds Add to Del.icio.us Digg This Comments One of Barack Obama’s campaign messages was the need to restore trust, and, if a new survey is any indication, he’s got his work cut out for him. Nearly two-thirds of the public trusts corporations less than they did a year ago, according to the 10th Edelman Trust Barometer. Just 38 percent of respondents said they trust business to do what is right – down 20 percent from last year. And that lack of trust comes from the top. Only 17 percent said they trust information coming from a company’s CEO. That’s lower than those Edelman measured after the Enron scandal, the dot-com bust and Sept. 11.

Richard Edelman - 6 A.M.: Open Season - 0 views

« The Wisdom of Negativity | Main August 26, 2008 Open Season I am just back from vacation and was sent a link to Jason Calacanis' monomaniacal riff in his subscriber based email on the shortcomings of PR people, titled, "How to Get PR for Your Startup; Fire Your PR Company." Captain Ahab has nothing on Mr. Calacanis. Catch a few of his choicest cuts from the white whale (PR): * Journalists hate PR people …if they say otherwise, they are lying, placating you, or just being diplomatic; * PR people are selling you a share of their relationships with journalists and their relationships are typically on shaky ground; * When I was a journalist I would not speak to PR people about my stories; * PR people are an inefficiency in the system; * Journalists are constantly getting banged by lazy, clueless PR people who fire first and don't understand what the word "aim" means; * You don't need a PR firm, you don't need an in-house PR person, and you don't need to spend ANY money to get amazing PR

Image via CrunchBase Hook-If you are attempting to brand read Steve Ruble he and the folks at Edelman do it for a living and they do it with GUSTO ! I think the greatest site on the Internet to start branding your self is http://www.squidoo.com/ Squidoo is a community website based in Irvington, N.Y. that allows users to create pages (called lenses) for subjects of interest. Lenses are interactive, and can contain Flickr photos, Google maps, blogs, eBay auctions, YouTube videos, and other links. Squidoo is in the top 500 most visited sites in the world, and in the top 250 most viewed in the United States.[1] It has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to charity. Development on Squidoo started in 2005, launching a beta testing period in October of that year.[2] The launch team consisted of Seth Godin, his book editor Megan Casey, former Fast Company employee Heath Row, Corey Brown, and Gil Hildebrand, Jr. Upon its announcement, Seth Godin, Squidoo's CEO, released a free ebook titled "Everyone's an Expert."[3] The ebook outlines the difference between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0, and then goes on to detail lenses and their effectiveness as a "nowblog." The site came out of beta testing two months later and reached 100,000 lenses within the first six months. It now has more than 700,000 lenses. Squidoo owes its name to the squid, which has eyes containing large lenses, analogous to Squidoo's lenses which as Godin notes, "provide a view on the world."[4] It ends in "oo" since tech companies with two "o"s in their name - Google, Yahoo!, Godin's own Yoyodyne - have all been a success.[4]Key people Seth Godin, Founder. Megan Casey, Editor in Chief Gil Hildebrand, Jr., Chief Engineer Corey Brown, COO Kimberly Dawn Wells, Community Organizer I have Lense and work on it a couple hours a week. Squidoo

Richard Edelman - 6 A.M.: How To Push Back Constructively - 0 views

  •
« A Different Davos | Main February 13, 2009 How To Push Back Constructively It has been a strange week for the business community on both sides of the Atlantic. Big bankers from the US and the UK were called before their legislators, who were venting public frustration over huge pay packages, constipated lending and opaque use of government bailout funds. It is important that companies learn how to play a new game, to dance the tango with a newly aggressive partner, namely government. Here are the four steps to a more equal relationship with the big-footed dancing companion: 1. Explanation and Contrition-No forward movement is possible in this relationship without an examination of the past. Companies should be willing to acknowledge misjudgment, and yes, even error. There should be lessons learned, policies amended, personnel changed in the process. The more specific the information, the more likely it is to be credible. For example, "We anticipated that the maximum decline in housing price would be 20% but the decline has proven to be 35%." There must also be a clear statement of contrition, not a fuzzy "once in a lifetime market circumstances". Executives should acknowledge personal failure and apologize to shareholders and employees alike. 2. Appreciation for Change from Shareholder to Stakeholder-CEOs must change from a uni-polar world of investors and analysts to a broader definition of audiences that puts employees first in line in the need to know. There should be a recognition of implication for society in any action, from reduction in force to decision to relocate production to another facility. 3. Presentation of Long Term Vision-The company needs to solicit buy-in for its future direction. Rather than keeping strategy as a matter for the board of directors alone, the CEO should share the vision with its broader publics. This will enable its new investor (government) to have the public support for a long-term view instead of b

curt hensenCheckmate 2.0: A Free Premium WordPress Theme The Perfect Building Block for Your Blog Checkmate has been a very popular WordPress theme with thousands of users worldwide. Now it is has been made even better. I've learned a thing or two from the users of Checkmate, listened to the feature requests and I've decided it is time to release Checkmate 2.0. Checkmate 2.0 is built on the original version of Checkmate, but could almost be considered a completely new theme. The interface has gotten a huge and much needed update. The layout is still simple and clean but now is more polished and modern. Customizing the CSS and the look of theme is even better, the entire site was coded with the end user customizing the site in mind.
