Supreme Court to hear cheerleader Brandi Levy's First Amendment case on student speech ... - 23 views

""This is the most momentous case in more than five decades involving student speech," said Justin Driver, a Yale law professor"

I don't think she should have been kicked out for expressing her opinion about the squad. There are so many people who do that especially about teachers. It doesn't effect how anyone is i.e bullying/ harassment these are just things that she thinks about the school and the sport.
  •
I believe that the coach had the right to kick her off of the squad. Her speech may have been protected however sports while they may be connected to the school ultimately if the coach decides that a participant is setting a bad example for their team they will be kicked out.
  •
I don't think she should have been kicked out for expressing how she felt if anything make her do more conditioning but dont kick her off the team
  •
I dont think that the coach really had any right to kick her off the team, she was expressing how it all made her feel and it was not at school, and why would someone even show the coach? why did they feel then need to do they
  •
I feel like the coach should not have had the right to kick the girl off the team because she expressed her feelings. The girl did this outside of school and it happens daily everywhere it is just never reported to the coach.
  •
I don't think the coach should have been able to kick her off the team she was expressing her feelings. I mean if they would have just let her on the team in the first place this situation wouldn't have happened.
  •
I think it was wrong for her to be kicked off the team just because she was expressing her feelings. It didn't even happen at school so she should not get punished by the school.
  •
Here is another link to the story if the original is not available for you... https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-56886687
  •
i think he was right to kick her off the team because the speech wasn't appropriate and that represents the teams, but i also think that she had the right to say what she was thinking, just not in that way. if he kicked her off for expressing her thoughts in a different way, then that would not be okay.
  •
In my opinion the coach should not have been able to kick her off the team. She was simply expressing her emotions and feelings about school. Many students say stuff like this in school and don't get punished for it.
  •
I personally think that kicking her off the team was the right decision. Her speech directly affected the team, the coaches, and the school, and action needed to be taken so it was clear that inappropriate conduct won't be tolerated. If she had worded her thoughts differently, maybe the outcome wouldn't have been the same.
  •
I feel like they shouldn't punish her. She was off school and had the right to voice her opinion. The school can't do anything if she wasn't even on school grounds.
  •
I think in this specific case they shouldn't have kicked her off the team because she was expressing how she feels. She didn't say anything offensive and she wasn't specifically targeting people. If what she said was targeting someone negatively or she was targeting the coach then maybe it'd be a different story but she was vaguely expressing her feelings and I don't think there is anything wrong with what she said.
  •
I don't think she should have been kicked off the team because she wasn't directly targeting someone. She was just voicing how she felt, I don't think she should be punished for that.
  •
I don't think she should be allowed to be kicked off for this because with something like this there isn't really anyone in specific that this is aimed towards so there's no targeted harm.
  •
I feel like they had a right to kick her off of the team. I'm on a competitive dance team and if I say anything that bashes or offends people at or people that work at my studio, then I would be kicked off of the team. She posted a photo saying that she's done with cheerleading and that is definitely something that would cost her a spot on the team.
  •
I feel like that is the right to free speech and she shouldn't be punished, but at the same time if its F School and F Cheerleading then why do it? Why participate in it then? Seems stupid on her part and disrespectful to the team, which I can see why she should also get kicked off. Because they don want someone like her representing their team.
  •
I think that it was right for them to kick her off because on a team you want to have responsible and respectful teammates. What she did affect the wholes teams image so I agree with what was done
  •
I think this case is dumb and a waste of time. So what she said F school everyone does. She's also a teenager she should be focusing on more important things other than a case.
  •
Obviously, she shouldn't have said this but I think the punishment was a bit harsh and she shouldn't have gotten kicked off the team for this. Yes it was disrespectful and no okay but the punishment seems extreme.

Things Will Get Better. Seriously. - 26 views

  •
Personally, I think every day is a step forward in going back to our normal lives. We should be more hopeful and optimistic.
  • ...20 more comments...
  •
I think that we are going in the right direction more people are following mask rules. Of course some people will not but that is to be expected.
  •
I feel like that it is true that things are getting better, but we can't forget the HOW of how they're getting better. We need to continue following guidelines and wearing masks so that we can get back to normal.
  •
I think things will eventually get better but people have to be patient and do the things that they need to do.
  •
I think things are slowly getting better. We just need to be more patient.
  •
I agree that things are getting better. There's also an issue with too many people panicking making the situation seem worse than it is at times.
  •
I think things are slowly getting better but it is gonna take time and patience for everything to be fully normal again.
  •
Actually, I think is not, the coronavirus come to stay, and am pretty sure that Joe Biden is going to win,and he will change all the laws we know and been for almost all the time, and we have to be prepared because this year would be a hard year.
  •
I think things are really tough right now, but, I think things have gotten a little bit better. I think that everyone just needs to take the right precautions so we can go back to how things were.
  •
I think every day is a step forward in going back to our normal lives. We should be more hopeful and optimistic.
  •
I think that times right now can be scary and worrisome, but I do agree that we need to be more hopeful and optimistic for the future.
  •
I think things will also definitely get better. We all had to face issues in 2020 but we needed them to happen to learn and grow. I feel we are much stronger going into 2021 with everything that happened.
  •
I think this will end up being a tough change before things get better
  •
I think that even though covid has caused a lot of devastation it's also will lead to a lot of advancements that will help us in the following years. If we follow the guidelines and get through the next few months I think that things will get better.
  •
I think that thing will get better as well and hopefully it does so that things can go back to normal and so we can feel safe again and live our lives more freely.
  •
I think we can solve covid, it will become something like the flu so all we have to do is vaccinate each year. I think it will get better in the future.
  •
I feel like things will stay in the same state for a while. If people would learn to get a long and not make everything controversial we will eventually move forward and have a better society. But if people keep judging and hating on people because of their beliefs things will continue to go downhill.
  •
With masks now seen as a political statement and the many people who are not going to get the vaccine, I am very pessimistic about COVID going away as soon as people want it. With President Biden's new plan we should have enough vaccines to get everyone in America vaccinated. But from what I've seen there are just too many people who don't wear masks and won't get the vaccine.
  •
I don't think things will get better for a while since we have covid and other bad things going on
  •
Just because some restrictions are being lifted, it doesn't mean that things are getting better. By lifting these restrictions in restaurants, movie theatres, etc. we are actually making covid cases go up, ultimately making things worse.
  •
I think that things will in time get better, but it will defiantly take some time. Simply because no one was really ready for this pandemic to hit and so people who were struggling before are struggling worse. My hope is once the vaccine is widely rolled out things will really start up again.
  •
I think that we need to ease back into "normal" and this is still very far. People shoulnd't just believe that since things are starting to get better that they are.
  •
Yeah things will get better but if people want it to get better quicker they should listen and get vaccinated, the covid vaccine has proven that it is safe and works.

More students got F's in first term of school year - The Washington Post - 21 views

  •
I am hoping to get some GOOD discussion in this thread. As we approach the final 3 weeks of Semester 1, what have we learned. From your perspective, what should schools (including ours) do about GRADING during the pandemic?
  • ...21 more comments...
  •
They should take into consideration how well the teacher is doing at helping students get feedback and help, some teachers are not doing their part when students ask for help. Both students and teachers have to be working hard to communicate effectively and if one falls out it could cause students to flop more
  •
Learning at home is not fun at all. Some teachers try and incorporate students at home, but then the students do not comply, but then some teachers don't even involve the students at home. It is extremely hard to stay focused at home when there are many distractions at home. I am not surprised at all by this statistic because we need to be in school. They need to shut down bars and restaurants before they even consider shutting down schools.
  •
Learning online is much more difficult than in person. It's harder to stay focused. It's harder to keep up when most teachers focus only on the students who are in the classroom. Although I still think we should continue to keep A-F grades because some colleges aren't accepting pass/fail, and pass/fail affects your GPA.
  •
I dont think we should change the A-F grading system, but I do think we should change either the curriculum or be more understanding and lax on the grading scale
  •
i dont think we should change the a-f grades but i do think that we should change how are curriculum is or we should start being more flexible both teacher and students towards assignments i think we should be more open because this is all knew to us
  •
I have noticed that online school is much more difficult than in person. Its hard to stay motivated and get all of your work get done. I feel like the teachers should try to include the online students a little bit more than they do. It will help keep everyone engaged and learning the things that they need too. I think there should still be an A-F format but maybe make it a little bit easier to take some stress of of students.
  •
I think that the way that grades are being made is becoming more unfair, The way people get grades is based off of assignments instead of actually knowing the stuff, it is based on memorizing instead of learning. There shouldn't be an A-F, there should be a pass or fail based on knowledge, not assignments.
  •
I think that doing work online is much harder than in person because I think I lose motivation to really do anything because some teachers feel like we are not really there and ignore us. I think we should still have A-F's because they are good but I wish the grades were curved a little because of these hard times.
  •
Online school has its setbacks, but I feel like it's manageable. School has been relatively the same despite the setbacks, and I appreciate our teachers not giving us an overabundance of work to do. And the work they do give us helps with class. I feared that this year would be hard because everyone said the junior year is the hardest, but this has been like any other year.
  •
I agree, with Michael, I thought this year was going to be really hard too, but I think the teachers have done a good job helping students when they need it, and have layed off on homework. Although it is hard to do online work, it is managable like Michael said.
  •
I believe in our grading system, but for the pandemic there need to be some changes. This year has been a crazy rollercoaster and because of that, I think we need to slow down and take a step back. The school needs to lighten up on assignments and focus more on if everyone is understanding the material.
  •
I never have F's but this year was my first year failing a class and I feel like online school is definitely one reason why, I don't even know what I'm doing in that class tbh. some teachers just don't do good enough to help us learn at home.
  •
I think that this year just hasn't been great for school and I hope that colleges understand this year and the grades that come along with it.
  •
I have learned that online school can be quite difficult for some people. The grading system should at least be altered to help students keep up.
  •
I definitely think that this year has been hard, especially with school and the stress of being virtual. But I think teachers have done a really good job of trying to help students and try to be interactive with the online students (In my case at least,). We should keep our grading system, and maybe we could improve on being more flexible with grading.
  •
I think that we should still have A-Fs. I do think that because of the pandemic there should be some changes, but I think that we need to have A-Fs especially for the kids who worked hard to get good grades it wouldn't be fair to them for trying hard and not getting credit.
  •
I think that having A-Fs are still a good idea, but we need to be adaptable in what it means to earn these grades. Stress and anxiety have been really hard this year and it wears on not only students but teachers as well. Teachers have been really trying to help their students and we should appreciate that.
  •
I think we should still have A-Fs. The pandemic doesn't need to change every aspect of our life. Personally, I had no issue learning at home and most people are simply using it as an excuse to slack off.
  •
Its harder for students to ask questions when online making it harder to understand questions
  •
i think that we should continue with the A-F grading scale. the pandemic doesn't really give you a whole lot of excuses. i mean i had some trouble doing some assignments because it was a little bit harder to do things at home without being able to freely ask questions
  •
I think that we should still have A-Fs still. Teachers just need to be more considerate of things going on at home for students and how much students are struggling this year.
  •
I agree with tkoesters274 teachers should take into consideration each student and what they are juggling at home and with schoolwork on top of everything and 7 classes that assign homework it gets hard to keep up especially with sports after school. I think we should keep the A-F scale because it's easy and everyone is used to it so don't fix what isn't broken.
  •
I think having more lenience for kids this year is necessary. Many have to work and help out their families. Many family members have died a depression is very serious and crushing.

Volunteers provide oxygen as India's COVID-19 cases near 20 million | Reuters - 16 views

  •
Do you guys think they should go into a lockdown? Do you think we should join the UK in sending aid to them?
  • ...14 more comments...
  •
I think India should seriously considering going into a lock down, even for a few days or weeks. That way it can contain the spread of the virus outbreak. Last year, we learned about the dangers of not containing this virus. I also think the U.S. should join the UK in helping them. I know our country has it's own problems, but if we can -- even just a little bit -- we should help others in the world during these tough times.
  •
i think that india should go into lockdown. cases are rising and if they don't quarantine, it will continue to rise
  •
They should consider a lockdown. So many people are getting sick, it's the best way to go. If they don't, who knows what could happen?
  •
they should definitely go on lockdown because it will just get worse and worse if they do not do anything right now when they should.
  •
I strongly feel that India should go on a breathly lockdown. The virus could spread more than it already is. With caution and responsibility, I feel like the numbers would go down by a lot. Now that covid has been going on for more than a year, we should think and do more research of how we should help others.
  •
I think for a country like India it's more complicated then just going into a lockdown. They have a population much higher than countries that have been able to successfully have lockdowns which makes it inherently much harder. On top of this India socioeconomic makeup make up is substantially poorer than countries that have had lockdowns as well. For a lot of India's population a lockdown just isn't viable, and you can see this in what happened in America as well where poorer people worked through lockdowns and because of this in poorer areas COVID spread easily. However this is a large portion of India's population, so this is an area where America needs to start exporting our extra vaccines since we have already had major success in our vaccine roll out and this is a grave situation
  •
I think India needs to go on a heavy lockdown. It's important that they take a lot of precautions because the virus could spread more than it already is and prevent another world lockdown from happening and keep other people safe. It would also help their numbers go down and to keep the threat of it spreading contained.
  •
India should go on lockdown right now when they can before it gets even worse for the people/
  •
With the severity of COVID in India, I think they need to come up with a strategic plan to control the virus. Whether that means a heavy lockdown or something else it's important they do something now before it gets even worse. They are in a terrible place right now with the amount of COVID cases and I don't think anyone wants to know what it will be like if it continues to get any worse.
  •
India definitely needs a lockdown right now. With COVID cases rising so drastically, this is the best possible thing for them to do to hopefully slow the spread of the virus.
  •
Understandably the severity of COVID-19 is extremely high, but India is also a third world country that relies heavily on their work force to bring in any kind of revenue for their government. In a country like India the governments respect for the residents is slim so while they should go into lock down I don't believe they will.
  •
They definitley need a lockdown as soon as possible. That could be a huge mess for India if covid isn't solved. I do think the US could provide aid I don't see why we couldn't?
  •
They should go on lockdown, it'd benefit them so things don't get worse. They are suffering and need as much help as possible so we should help them.
  •
I do believe they need to go into lockdown very soon so they can try to help keep themselves safe.
  •
I think they should go into lockdown to make sure everyone is safe.
  •
I think they should go to lockdown since covid is very bad there.

Fact Checking Biden's First Week in Office - 7 views

  •
    Thoughts on this?
  • ...2 more comments...
  •
I think they have been alright. At least, according to this article, he isn't spreading too many lies. Only 3 out of 20, which isn't the best, but could definitely be worse.
  •
Bidens first week can be monumental if you're on the left-leaning side, President Biden has changed a lot of bills backed by Republicans that were signed during Trump's term in office. But if you're on the right-leaning side his first week in office has been a clear sign of what his presidency will fulfill. Whether the Pipeline or 30+ Executive orders he's signed off on. I feel as if bi-partisanship will be quite difficult during this administration.
  •
As someone who identifies as a leftist and a progressive, I think that Biden has done a very good job but there will always be more that I think that he should do. Compromise with the Republicans in Congress isn't an option right now.
  •
Biden has done a pretty good job so far but there are obviously further steps he needs to take but it's early on and he's at least going down the right path as of now.

New mask rules trust Americans will be honest about vaccine status - 15 views

  •
I think that all of us know that people are going to lie about their vaccine status. It will be interesting to see how stores and other public places are going to handle this new rule.
  • ...10 more comments...
  •
Honestly, the mandate is lifted (for Iowa at least) so if you do not want to wear a mask, vaccinated or not you shouldn't have to. It is your choice. And you should especially not have to have the vaccine to travel and put something in your body not proven to be safe or cause long-term effects. There are bigger problems to worry about than if Americans will lie and say they're vaccinated to not wear their mask especially if it's not mandated in the area.
  •
I am interested in how the cases will turn out now that more people are not wearing masks. If it gets too bad I'm sure something else will be put into place.
  •
I wonder how the government is going to force non vaccinated people to wear a mask. It is real easy to just say you're vaccinated when you really aren't.
  •
i don't think that people will be honest about their vaccinations only to not wear their mask. not everyone carries their vaccination card with them(although we should, i know i don't)
  •
I think this is going to be interesting to see. So many people were already refusing to wear masks and I think this might just make it worse.
  •
I don't think this was the right move, as America is nowhere close to herd immunity
  •
I have still seen people on social media that have admitted to not wearing masks and not getting vaccinated citing "My body, my choice". This is idiotic and people think that the government is out to get them and control them by wanting them to wear masks and getting the vaccine. There are also people who don't trust the vaccine for no good reason.
  •
I don't think many people are out there being honest. Many are going to think that if it isn't required why would they wear one? It's a lot of trust on something you don't have a definite answer for.
  •
now people might not be required to wear a mask if they are fully vaccinated so fewer people will stop wearing masks. Even people who are not vaccinated are going to use that excuse that "they are vaccinated"
  •
People are going to lie about being vaccinated, just like they lie about having a medical exemption. All we can do is hope that people will be honest.
  •
A lot of people now getting vaccinated, meaning that when they have their proper doses they don't need to wear a mask, which means that a lot of people will either be honest or lie to not wear a mask. It will be interesting how republic places will make people either wear their masks or not.
  •
Good discussion so far! I'll also point people to the new thread on the new Iowa law banning mask mandates in schools and local governments. Definitely some overlap in these topics.

Trump Twist - 3 views

  •
It would be strange to see but it could be plausible, Trump isn't exactly safe with his words and what he does, so it wouldn't be that far off to maybe assume that he might be trying to find votes that don't exist.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
There are many things Trump has tried to convince people. It is very unlikely that there is voting fraud by millions of thousands. It is going to take more than just saying that to make it true. He needs to find evidence that this has been proven true. If there is then I could see his point, but without it, it makes it hard to believe.
  •
Trump has lost and he needs to accept that. There is no evidence of voting fraud in the thousands and millions, and the votes he needed aren't just magically going to appear. Without concrete proof, this is just an adult throwing a temper tantrum.
  •
This is possible but at some point, you have to give up. There is no proof beyond a reasonable doubt that the election was rigged so maybe its time to stop trying.

Reynolds: New Iowa COVID-19 restrictions start at midnight - 9 views

  •
I think this is for the best. The rising in Covid cases in Iowas and the midwest alone is ridiculous. I believe that these restrictions are for the betterment of getting the virus under control. Everyone needs to follow this limitation if we ever want to better next year. From the looks of it, this pandemic might continue for more than a year if we don't abide by the rules they are giving to help us.
  • ...4 more comments...
  •
I think that it's good that we got new restrictions, but I don't think people will follow them for very long.
  •
I think it is good there are more restrictions being put in place, but I don't think it will help anyone, because people are still going to big gatherings.
  •
I think the new regulations needed to be put into place to help decrease the covid cases. I think that the governor was justified for wanting to put a mask mandate in. People in Iowa were not being and so I feel that now was a good time to put restrictions in.
  •
This is definitely for the best, cases are rising quickly and people weren't taking it as seriously as before. I hope people will do these things to save not only themself, but other people as well.
  •
hopefully, this helps the cases go down

I feel we need these new restrictions I think they are helpful and now people might take it more seriously

Germany coronavirus: Fans turn out for Tim Bendzko concert -- but don't worry it's for ... - 17 views

  •
Would you volunteer to be part of a study like this? Why or why not?
  • ...18 more comments...
  •
If I didn't have sports to play and could watch an artist I enjoy for free I would participate in a study like this. The reason being I'm healthy and all of my friends who have gotten the virus said it felt like a cold. (I know this isn't the case for all people of course)
  •
Yes, because i'm healthy and have a small chance of dying from the corona virus.
  •
I think I would try and avoid an experiment like this. Don't get me wrong, it sounds interesting and enjoyable but even if I could listen to a band I enjoy, there is always going to be a looming fear of me getting the virus. I wouldn't be able to focus on the music.
  •
I don't think I would consider being apart of experiments like this, mainly because I don't want to get it and maybe spread it to others who didn't even attend it, like my family or friends. It would just make me nervous, to be honest.
  •
I wouldn't try. because I don't wanna get Corona. or I don't wanna spread to people.
  •
I would volunteer because it's a free concert and it would help bring back more live events that would be safer and help us get back to normality plus I'm a healthy kid so I'm low risk.
  •
I would volunteer because its a free concert and I am very healthy and if I were to get it I would most likely recover from it and be fine.
  •
I would definitely volunteer to be apart of this study. I think we need to try and gain some normalcy back into our lives. Another reason I'd try this is because I'm very healthy and haven't been exposed to anything. With this study underway, we as people could see if this could be an effective way to get back to our lives
  •
I wouldn't volunteer because yes its a free concert, and yes I'm healthy so I'm at low risk but, I have lots a family members who are at high risk. Even if I'm fine and get it, those who are around me and are at high risk might not be in the long run. I rather stay safe for others.
  •
Ok so, this is like a 50/50 no I don't want corona but if I can help humanity to figure out more about this virus then i would do it hands down no questions asked.
  •
I would volunteer to do this study because I think it would be a cool opportunity to see where you can get COVID and where it is mostly at. I would absolutely volunteer just for the experience and to see what is around me and to see if we could actually use something other than masks.
  •
I think I would definitely participate in this study because I think society needs to try to get back to normalcy and try to figure out how to go back to times before covid.
  •
I would volunteer because I'm all for trying to get things back to normal. I think that corona has changed our lives enough, and I don't think we should have to live in fear of going in public without a mask.

I would not volunteer because its dangerous enough trusting some masks material to protect you from spreading or receiving the virus. As nice as a free concert would sound, it would be too risky to make it as a test. If they used something other than humans (or easier to maintain animals) for testing, it could make tests less worrisome when post-results are gathered.
  •
I would do it because I know that I can't die from the virus, so I think it would be cool to find out how quickly it actually spreads and how many people are really effected by it
  •
I would volunteer because i think it would be fun to go to a concert also it would help get more information on covid and how to deal with it.
  •
I would not participate in this experiment because I would not put myself in a situation where I'm most susceptible to the potentially deadly virus.
  •
I would participate in this experiment because I could have fun while giving people more information about COVID 19.
  •
I would not put myself in this situation to do this while still a deadly sickness. I would not put myself in this if the risk is to die
  •
I would never do a study like this because I am at higher risk to get COVID and so are the people I live with, I wouldn't want to put them at risk for a concert I'm probably not going to remember in a few months.

Donald Trump impeachment trial: what you need to know | US news | The Guardian - 1 views

  •
"Donald Trump's unprecedented second impeachment trial begins on Tuesday 9 February in the Senate. He is the first US president to be impeached twice, and it is the first time an impeachment trial has been held against a former president"
  •
In trumps rally he never openly said that his supporters should have stormed the capitol he said that they should "Fight like hell" and "Peacefully and "Patriotically Make your voices heard". A second impeachment isn't necessary.
  •
Um, I think a second impeachment is very needed. Trump may have done good for the economy and we can thank him for that, but as a person he is horrid. The thing he says, does, posts, etc, he acts like a little 14-year-old girl and I would rather my country not be run by a child. Him being impeached TWICE says enough. The things you have to do to be impeached even once..

Court Rejects Death Row Inmate Appeal - 20 views

i think this guy should be executed the way he tortured and killed james thimm as well as beaten like he did to that little boy.
  • ...6 more comments...
  •
i totally agree. he should be treated the way he treated and what he did to james thimm and what he did to the little boy. the little boy was only 5 years old thats just dumb.
  •
How could you kill a person, let alone beat a five year old to death? What did the kid ever do to him...?
  •
I think he should be sentenced to death what he did was wrong and completely inhumane
  •
I think all people should be punished for crimes like that because if you don't other will just do the same
  •
Treat others the way you would want to be treated so he should be killed
  •
    Great thinking Koontz lol
  •
Yeah I agree killing killers is good because they killed some one else, so every one who kills some one should be killed by some one else.... wait, then that person would have to be killed. Maybe capital punishment isn't the best policy. Maybe prisons should focus on reform instead.
  •
I'm with Kevin. Yes, they did something wrong, but to kill them is just as wrong. Plus, you can sit behind a computer and say that you think he should die, but to actually be the person to do it is much different. You don't get that held on your conscience for killing someone, so of course you're fine with the killing of them. They're a monster. But still a person, and to kill them puts you on the same level of being a monster. And to do the same thing he did to the kid and the guy is even worse. Do you really think that it would be right to that? Could you personally do that to someone? Because if you can you are LITERALLY just as bad as he was.

Iowa Lawmakers Now Seek To Ban Traffic Cameras - 9 views

  •
Has there been any real results from installing the traffic cameras? I know that the ones by my house don't always work so it just seems like a waste of resources there. They have probably helped reduce the amount of people that step on it when the light turns yellow but does that really solve any problems? or just teach us to rive faster in order to avoid the red lights?
  • ...5 more comments...
  •
I saw an article this summer which argues they cause more rear end collisions when drivers slam on the brakes to avoid a ticket. Interesting read on both sides of the issue from ABC news. http://goo.gl/JKwmO
  •
I believe that traffic cameras cause many people to become fearful of red light intersections. Because of their fear, they sometimes don't pay as much attention to their own surrounding
  •
i think they should get rid of the traffic cameras. ive almost hit someone bc they slammed on the brakes unexpectedly. they can be hazardous
  •
I agree with Zac And Alexis. I hate it when its counting down, and you have to determine if you want to stop or speed up. Its very stressful!
  •
I think they should keep them. There good for safety and people can be more aware because they know they would get a ticket if not.
  •
I think they should get rid of them, people are more scared to get a ticket than to slam on their breaks surprising the car behind them, causing a fender bender accident.
  •
I agree with the ban. Sure, people run less red lights, but they have caused stoplights to be more of a danger. People start speeding more to make the light to not get a ticket or brake really hard and cause accidents.

Should the U.S. lock down again to stop the coronavirus? | AllSides - 29 views

  •
I feel like we can't go on a full lockdown. This will make the economy even worse than it currently is.
  • ...39 more comments...
  •
I feel like there should be more regulation and rules but we should not go on full lockdown because it could cause many businesses to crash and close down.
  •
even though many feel as though we should go into full lock down, I don't think it would be the best idea. especially because we had tried it in the beginning and people were still wandering around and two, we can't keep digging a hole for the economy
  •
I think if we go into a full lockdown, our economy won't be in the best place for the country and I don't think we are mentally strong enough to deal with a full lockdown.
  •
This is why I believe that stimulus checks are necessary. Yes, many Americans would be left without an income if a lockdown was put in place, but that's why a stimulus check would be helpful. Money provided to those who need it during a lockdown would ultimately help enforce a lockdown long enough to see Covid-19 numbers go down.
  •
I believe that if we go into a lockdown, our economy wouldn't be the same anymore and would get worst over time.
  •
I think that if we go into full lock down, people will freak out even more than they already are. Everyone would stock up on everything and we all know how that went with the toilet paper last time we tried to be on lock down.
  •
We absolutely need to go into full lock-down. Concerns about the economy, in my opinion, are entirely bunk. It's saying that it's okay for people to risk their lives unnecessarily so that a line can go up on a graph. I'd hope people have learned something, and would know that they don't need to hyperstock on certain things.
  •
I think if we would have just gone on a nationwide full lockdown for 2 or 3 weeks at the beginning of this, we would be much better off. I think it would be a good idea, but with how far the pandemic has progressed, I'm not sure it would help as much as it would have a long time ago.
  •
It could have been better if we did something right away when Covid first started and not waited to do something. We could probably have stopped it from being so dangerous,
  •
In my opinion a nation wide lock-down will not do anything but harm. There are still millions of Americans that have not been able to recover form the first wave of lock-down, as stated in the story up above. And i know that a huge counter argument is that the government can just pay us more during a lock-down. While that is true that would put us further and further into debt that we are struggling to get out of. A Lot of it comes down to the people, by that i mean that people have to take others into consideration, wearing a mask, social distance. That way Americans can still go to work and provide for their family's without the help of the government.
  •
I agree with you Zoe, but in order for that to work, every country would have had to do a lockdown. and sadly we didn't know the severity back then so people still had an excuse to be ignorant.
  •
I believe a full lockdown is necessary if people ever want to go back to living their lives as "normal" again. There are plenty of other countries living covid free as they did a strict lockdown in the beginning, as we should have done. A few weeks of a strict lockdown isn't going to kill us just as it didn't kill anyone in the other countries where strict lockdowns occurred.
  •
I feel like another lockdown would help if not eliminate the virus but like last time not everyone cooperated and if history shows that it won't be worth locking down again then there's not really a point. Another impact of locking down like some comments and brought up is the economy getting severely worse than it already is. In a perfect fantasy land bills would freeze, everyone would get stimulus checks that wouldn't run out and the virus would go away but that is all super unlikely if another lockdown occurs.
  •
while we cant go on a full lockdown, there needs to be tighter restrictions on people, or heavier responses to keep infections down
  •
I think that going into lockdown or some kind of restriction would help slow the spread of the virus, but not stop it. People would not cooperate to stop the spread of the virus completely. Other countries that had strict Covid restrictions are doing much better than the United States, and some have even eliminated covid completely. If the US could do that it might work, but the economy would still get worse during the lockdown.
  •
If the outbreak is getting worse I think that we should do some sort of lock down. Maybe some restriction so that less people are in large groups so that we can control the virus.
  •
Since we can't go into a full lockdown I think they should make the restrictions more known if people aren't wearing a mask in public I think they should be fined but, I think the amount of money should be high so people will think twice.
  •
I'm not real sure on what to do in this siutation. If we shut down our country, our economy will go down. If wes stay open, more covid cases. I dont know which one is worse.
  •
I don't think the US can handle another lockdown. The economy tanked the first time and I cant imagine how bad it'll get if we lockdown again
  •
we should not lock down again it will hurt the economy
  •
I think we should have more restrictions but I don't think we should go into full lockdown or else people will lose jobs and businesses
  •
I feel like we haven't been on a full lock down, in some states they are more serious about COVID, in others there's not even a mask mandate.
  •
I thinnk people dont realize how big corona is in the US because of ignorance, lack of respect and decency, and or just they don't know. If we need to lock down, we need to lockdown. No uts no butts no coconuts. Fighting this is what got us here in the first place. We could be like other countries where they have respect for each other and themselves, and corona is almost gone or very low.
  •
There are definitely a lot of things to consider, like our economy, if we were to go into lock down. I just don't thing it's possible right now but we should still have restrictions.
  •
I feel like we should but are not able to go on another lock down
  •
No we should not go on lockdown again because no matter how much we do that it will slow it down but it wont stop it and it also will just go right back up one the lockdown is over.
  •
things are starting to calm down more than before and were just learning to live with it as we do any other virus. With the vaccine now people are going to feel safer and hopefully, it actually will be saving lives. If it gets worse a shutdown may be the best option, but right now learning to live with it is the better option.
  •
I think we could go on lockdown again but there is no point anymore because we should of done that right away when it first started and people are getting the vaccines already so it doesn't really matter if we do or don't.
  •
I don't think we need a full-scale hardcore lockdown, we do need tighter enforcement of mandates and stricter punishments for not following public safety, I get people don't want to, but that one person who didn't wear their mask could end up getting your loved ones sick, if everyone just followed guidelines we would get out of this funk sooner
  •
The country is divided over the false binary of financial and health security. Reopening is not enough to ensure economic prosperity, but setting a lockdown is also not enough to contain the virus and prevent needless death.
  •
Another lock down would just cause more discomfort and an economic fall. With people not being able to work it would be very difficult to keep the economy great and balanced. If another lock down was to occur more people would be bothered because they just want to go back to normal life.
  •
I personally don't think we need to go on full lockdown again especially since the new covid vaccine. i think that it's okay to lift some rules and regulations on public places, but we still need to wear masks and stay safe until the pandemic is completely over
  •
I don't think we should go into another full lockdown with closing down non-essential stores because too many businesses had to shutdown or almost had to after the first lockdown.
  •
I don't think we should have to lock down again, we're in the process of releasing the vaccine, and less people are dying
  •
I don't think we should go back t=into another lockdown because I don't think our economy will do very good and I think some peoples mental health won't be in the best place if we do another lockdown
  •
If we went into a lockdown our economy would suffer tremendously and there is no point. If we go into lockdown then I don't really see the point of all of the vaccinations and all of the other mandates we have.
  •
Having another lock down would just put the United States into a far worse situation. More people would lose jobs, more people would go into debt, and our economic status would fall tremendously. I agree with luke in the fact that going into lockdown would just make the vaccine pointless because nobody would be going out anymore.
  •
no we will lose alot of money
  •
I dont think we should go into lockdown because if we expose our bodies to the virus steadily and take vitamins and antibodies our immune system will be stronger and get closer to fighting off the virus.
  •
I don't think we should go into lockdown again but if people keep lifting up their masks, we're probably gonna have to go into lockdown again.
  •
I feel that the issue is passed on now and we no longer need the lockdown or quarantine. Most people have already passed this issue on in their heads.

I see these types of things in the new and I don't understand why they keep oping more places that don't really follow health proto call. If you pass by restaurants you can see there are people sitting outside so close to each other. I also think inspectors should let business know what are to Porto calls because there are some places where they had no idea what is the rule.

Political Cartoon: Middle Class - 60 views

  •
President Obama said yesterday that the United States faces "a make or break moment" for a middle class that is shrinking because of "gaping" income inequality. In the comments, please give your thoughts on what this cartoon is implying and if you agree/disagree.
  • ...31 more comments...

For more information on Obama's speech you can check USA Today http://goo.gl/oTNj9 If you look at this page, you may want to check out the "Presidential Approval Tracker" ... seems like a pattern to me.
  •
obama is a good man, and is trying to be a hero for the middle and lower class. If it wasnt for the republicans blocking every move democrats try to make and making our nation more inefficient than a classroom filled with apes, maybe by now our economy would actually be fixed, but no people cant come together for more than a week for the good of a whole country.
  •
The cartoon seems to imply that the "middle class" people have more to lose than they could gain/ can hold on to. While the wealthy are continuing to prosper significantly.
  •
I believe this gap is closing and most likely will work because theres enough people that want to close the "gap" and there will nolonger be a huge money gap anymore
  •
The "fuzzy math" section of the article is interesting because the statistics happen to be true. However, incorporating more ideals aligned with Socialistic ideology may not be the worst thing that could happen to this country.
  •
I believe that if we try to fix the "gap" in our country, the "gap" will increasingly become farther apart...
  •
"The richer are get richer" I believe that taxing the people who get higher income wont solve anything, I think that everyone should be equal. If the government starts taxing the wealthy then many middle class wont try as hard to get a higher income because of the higher taxes they will have to pay.
  •
I think the middle class are more likely to break than make.
  •
When has any of Obama's plans actually worked? I think the middle class is in big trouble.
  •
If we try to fix the "gap" of our country then the "gap" will continue to grow, if everyone came together for everything we would live in a perfect world, it wouldn't be fair if we had higher taxes for the rich, because some of them have worked hard for their money and it's not fair to tax them because of that.
  •
I also feel that the rich should be paying higher taxes, and the poor should get a little bit lower taxes
  •
I strongly disagree with Obama that the wealthy should get taxed more. What happened to "fair, open and honest?" It's not fair to those who succeed in life to have to pay more taxes for someone who failed or dropped out of high school.
  •
the tax situation is a good point but instead of paying said amount we should pay a certain percentage of our wage. so everyone no matter how much they make will put forth the same "share" of their wage and everyone will be happy. i mean seriously, does that multi-millionare really need any more money? heck ill be happy with just one million.
  •
I disagree with obama i feel everyone should be taxed the same why should the wealthy be punished for how succesful they are
  •
I think that Obama is trying his best to help out his country, but he needs to make more effective decisions.
  •
I agree with broxton, if taxes were based on a percentage of the income of a person, it would be fare and easy, no one could complain because you're only paying according to what you earn and not according to what is expected.
  •
I think the cartoons implying that Obama uses the middle-class and everything he's "going" to do for them as a bridge to stay president and win America over, when in fact he's making matters worse for the group he is supposedly "helping".
  •
if you in the middle class lower class or higher class you have to pay you taxes and we should all be taxed equaly
  •
I think that he is trying but he should make some diff. decision.
  •
i have to agree with broxton it makes sence to have a precent of ur wages be taken out. so some one working a part time job is paying a little bit and a person like warren buffet is paying alot abit but the wealthy well always find a way to wigil there way out of paying. always hav always will.
  •
I agree with Brock. I think there should be a percentage coming out of our income because it wouldn't be fair if we tax the rich more and the poor less just because they are more successful. Most people were raised differently and they have had more (or less) connections to get them to where they are now. It doesn't seem fair at all.
  •
I agree with what is being said on most of these comments.I do not believe the rich should have to pay higher taxes because they worked hard to get were they are now and just because we have a gap in our income does not mean that they have to pay for it.
  •
Our middle class is beginning to diminish because we are either rich or we are poor. In the role of gender, men have more opportunities to have more pay. Taxes are different based on pay, the more you make the more they take.
  •
A flat tax percentage may seem to favor the wealthy, but it's the only fair way to do things. Everyone is supposed to be equal in this country.
  •
I agree with Ziada. We are getting to the point were it's either the poor or the rich. The middle-class is starting to disappear.
  •
The middle class is all but gone. We don't even see them any different than that of the lower class. we are rich or we are poor, never in the middle.everyone thinks that the other makes to much or not enough
  •
I feel like Obama just talks about the stuff that people want to hear, yet he does nothing actually about the problems. Who cares if you can talk for almost an hour about a situation but don't do anything about it. Like many people said I don't believe people who are more successful should suffer to pay more taxes than people who do not have as much money because they did not prosper as much as someone who does work harder.
  •
I Also agree with ziada ,This is getting out of hand , what will happen if we break ? were do us, our society in the middle class go ?
  •
"A flat tax percentage may seem to favor the wealthy, but it's the only fair way to do things. Everyone is supposed to be equal in this country." I don"t think so, After all can you really say it's fair for someone with more means then responsibilities to pay a much lower overall percentage then someone with more responsibilities then means? I think that there is no way to make this kind of thing 100% fair but it is fairer to look at this kind of thing as percentages then as flat numbers.
  •
The rich shouldnt have to pay more because of their success they took their opportunities and made the best of them. of course many might have had the same opportunities but just didnt take them. or some simply didnt have the opportunity at all. the middle class will have a few struggles here and there, but in the end i think everything will be alright.maybe.i hope.
  •
This seems like a moment in American history where choices have to be made that everyone may not agree on. People are forced to use their money on others even if they don't want to. I hate the idea of being forced to use my money, but, the idea that people would rather the poor die and move out of the way is worse. No matter what, the choices are really difficult and can harm more than help. In the future we'll all look back on the results and hope they were for the better.
  •
Rising taxes for the rich in unjust and rising taxes for everyone is just dumb. They spend our tax money on useless things like art work instead of helping the very thing that keeps this country going... The people.
  •
I don't think that taxing the wealthy will really solve anything. The money won't go to the middle class, it will be tax money. Which goes to the state, which gets spent on different items. Tax money isn't just transferred to the pockets of the people of the lower and middle class.
