Topological insulator laser - 2 views

  •
These are lasers whose lasing mode exhibits topologically-protected transport without magnetic fields. The underlying topological properties lead to a highly efficient laser, robust to defects and disorder, with single mode lasing even at very high gain values.

Probing Planets in Extragalactic Galaxies Using Quasar Microlensing - 2 views

  •
Here, we show that quasar microlensing provides a means to probe extragalactic planets in the lens galaxy, by studying the microlensing properties of emission close to the event horizon of the supermassive black hole of the background quasar, using the current generation telescopes

Detection of Intact Lava Tubes at Marius Hills on the Moon by SELENE (Kaguya) Lunar Rad... - 0 views

The paper I talked about with the proof of a gigantic lava tube discovered in 2017 from data of the Japanese lunar mission
  •
Given the size of this thing we may consider a project on city urban planning inside. I would see a rocket-port outside the crater, some lift systems to get in, a closed dome with artificial atmosphere where to develop the city possible trekking routes on the lunar surface, a mirror system to get sunlight in, an energy factory just outside the entry.

Dynamic flat lens with metasurface actuated with MEMS - 2 views

  •
Great engineering feat from Capasso's idea - an integrated flat lens electrically controlled enabling dynamic beam steering. Reconfigurabilility is the aim. The lens can be used microscope systems, holographic and projection imaging, LIDAR and laser printing. Besides working now on the mid-IR, visible light is the target.

The fact that this article is written in two languages, one is english and the other one is russian...? I get the impression that russians are among the first to hit upon such barriers before the rest of us do, from scaling their programming to bumping upon theory of chaos etc etc Imho.

Comeback for Genetic Algorithms...Deep Neuroevolution! - 5 views

  •
Genetic algorithms are a competitive alternative for training deep neural networks for reinforcement learning. For paper see: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1712.06567.pdf
  •
Interesting pointers in this one! I would like to explore neuroevolution as well, although it seems extremely resource-demanding?
  •
Not necessarily, I think it can be made to be much faster hybridizing it with backprop and Taylor maps. Its one ideas in the closet we still have not explored (Differential Intelligence: accelerating neuroevolution).

Evolutionary Strategies are able to explore broader areas of the search space than reinforcement learning techniques. Thus, they are able to encounter strange bugs resulting in large rewards.
