Technology/Robotics Scientists have developed an octopus-like robot, which can zoom through water with ultra-fast propulsion and acceleration never before seen in man-made underwater vehicles. Most fast aquatic animals are sleek and slender to help them move easily through the water but cephalopods, such as the octopus, are capable of high-speed escapes by filling their bodies with water and then quickly expelling it to dart away.

A group from Carnegie Mellon wants to send a robot to the Moon to beam live pictures of the Moon to Oculus Rift headset users, reported technology reporter Jane Wakefield of the BBC. Andy the robot is intended to swing into action as a robot on a mission to transform education about space.

This concept for a "soft-robotic rover with electrodynamic power scavenging" comes from Cornell University, and NASA has awarded it a grant under the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program to hoist itself up from TRL 1 to TRL 2.

My son Patrick has done his training period in MIT on this NAO. type "NAO Bechon" and you will get some results including a nice video...

Roughly half of the researchers in robotics I know work on Naos, including those in my lab...

The video says it all... made me laugh for a long time

"The researchers also discovered that the robot is very bad at juggling shoes and Coke bottles"... I wonder if that's the future work directions in their IEEE paper.

yeah check out the making of, it's a nice movie and what would robotics movies be without movie magic :) somewhere they mentioned a vision system, which I think based on the making-of video they haven't really used for the video shoot

Origami bot!

It's really cool when it folds up, but then it's such a disappointing walk :) I also fail to see an advantage over regular robots. If you care about saving space during transportation, you could design a robot with that in mind without much sacrifice to it's locomotion capabilities.

I guess it might also make sense to put a camera on an extension to look around corners without having to advance the vehicle to where it can be shot at... ?: Could the Oculus be used to let humans control humanoid robots? I guess so. Could humans perform experiments using such robots? Probably. Could Oculus be used to control these robots on the ISS? I guess so. --> Finally we eliminated the last need for humans in space!!! :-D (Maybe we could replace humans on Earth with robots that control one another through Oculus Rift...)

Even cooler would be to have like a swarm of drones around the tank to act as a sensor array and look around corners for you.
