Rydberg atom simulates Trojan asteroids - physicsworld.com - 3 views

  •
The atom may not be a planetary system, but under specific circumstances it can behave like one. That is the curious finding of physicists in Austria and the US, who have confirmed a 1994 prediction that, in the presence of an applied electromagnetic field, electrons in very highly energized atomic states should behave like the Trojan asteroids of Jupiter.

'This Planet Tastes Funny,' According to Spitzer - 2 views

  •
Spectra of the atmosphere of the planet GJ436b in the constellation Loe show evidence for carbon monoxide. Theoretical studies using numerical models however predicted that this planet's carbon inventory should be stored in the form of methane rather than CO as its temperature is estimated to be 800K. Where this inaccuracy of atmospheric models comes from is not known and has to be investigated further.

Lockheed Martin buys first D-Wave quantum computing system - 1 views

  • D-Wave develops computing systems that leverage the physics of quantum mechanics in order to address problems that are hard for traditional methods to solve in a cost-effective amount of time. Examples of such problems include software verification and validation, financial risk analysis, affinity mapping and sentiment analysis, object recognition in images, medical imaging classification, compressed sensing and bioinformatics.

According to the company's wikipedia page, the computer costs $ 10 million. Can we then declare Quantum Computing has officially arrived?! quotes from elsewhere in the site: "first commercial quantum computing system on the market"; "our current superconducting 128-qubit processor chip is housed inside a cryogenics system within a 10 square meter shielded room" Link to the company's scientific publications. Interestingly, this company seems to have been running a BOINC project, AQUA@home, to "predict the performance of superconducting adiabatic quantum computers on a variety of hard problems arising in fields ranging from materials science to machine learning. AQUA@home uses Internet-connected computers to help design and analyze quantum computing algorithms, using Quantum Monte Carlo techniques". List of papers coming out of it.

[1105.5170] Validation of Dunbar's number in Twitter conversations - 0 views

  •
We test the theoretical cognitive limit on the number of stable social relationships known as Dunbar's number. We find that users can entertain a maximum of 100-200 stable relationships in support for Dunbar's prediction.

Forecasting Brain Science and its impact on technology - 3 views

  •
For those sceptics about the use of neuroscience: A 20min talk (by a computer scientist!) about brain science and its use to build intelligent technology
  •
so what does he sell? 22' without saying anything? Just "intelligence is prediction" - great but what are you gonna do mate?
  •
I do not think his intention is to sell anything... Just to make people (from a non neuroscience background) aware that brain science will have an impact on technology. Also: I am a firm believer in that "prediction"defines intelligence, as he states, and that making machines that behave in such a way is the way to go :) (the talk is from 2003 btw :p)

"The Complexity of Nash Equilibria,", It also suggests that the Nash equilibrium may not be an accurate prediction of behavior in all situations. Daskalakis's research emphasizes the need for new, computationally meaningful methods for modeling strategic behavior in complex systems such as those encountered in financial markets, online systems, and social networks.

How Michael Osinski Helped Build the Bomb That Blew Up Wall Street -- New York Magazine - 0 views

  • You needed models to create the intricate network of bonds based on the homeowners’ payments, models to predict prepayment rates, and models to predict defaults. You needed the Internet to sail these bonds back and forth across the world, massaging their content to fit an investor’s needs at a moment’s notice. Add to all this the complacency, greed, entitlement, and callous stupidity that characterized banks in post-2001 America, and you have a recipe for disaster.
