    These conclusions come too late to have a real impact on decisions that will be taken in Copenhagen, I assume. But I think it is a hot topic as climate change 'solutions' that work QUICKLY are more and more needed!!

    I think the major benefit of this system is the low cost of the products involved compared to standard flow batteries. However, two issues still remain, corrosion and size. I think these things need to be big right due to the volumetric storage using quinones? Nevertheless, it is interesting to see where this development will lead to. "The system is far from perfect, however: bromine and hydrobromic acid are corrosive, and could cause serious pollution if they leaked. "The bromine is, right now, the Achilles heel of this particular battery," Aziz says. The answer could be to go completely organic, he adds: "We are working on replacing the bromine with a different quinone." Are there quinones which would not be corrosive but retain good volumetric performance?

    A worrying future looms as scientist predict the iconic great barrier reef is at a turning point and could experience irreversible damage before 2030 if nothing is done right now. Well actually, I am not sure if anything can be done as the two degree rise (and changes in ocean temperature/acidity probably?) will likely happen in any case due to delayed effects of decades of pollution, whether or not we stop now with emissions will probably not make much difference. :(

    Plastic needs a timescale of millenia to dissolve in the ocean and in the meantime it is accumulated in the water due to systematic dumping of garbage in the ocean since decades. Deploying buoyant devices at the location of the gyres (permanent circular currents in the ocean) is proposed for collecting the thin particles. The ambitious concept was developped by a Delft student, presented at a TEDx (see link), made a feasibility study through crowdfunding and now announces a public contest for developing mechanical parts of the harvesting system.

    Yes. In China it happens apparently quite often that weather is regionally modified, e.g. in order to have good weather conditions during certain events (like olympics in Beijing). But also in other countries weather modification is applied, for reasons of agriculture, pollution, skiing, etc. Obviously, one wonders on the environmental impact of such an artificial cloud feeding process with silver iodide. I just googled, stumbling upon this report http://www.weathermodification.org/AGI_toxicity.pdf which published the result: no environmentally harmful effects...

    and w.r.t. ur question: I mean different weather conditions which we experience locally (like droughts or other extreme weather events) are (often) due to large-scale/global climatic changes. Hence, cloud seeding just describes a local, short-term mitigation of these events. However, there is a geoengineering proposal (so climate modification) which also suggests to seed clouds above the sea (i.e. increase cloud coverage, e.g. by using seaspray as cloud condesation nuclei), thereby increasing the planetary albedo (Earth reflectance) and reducing the energy reaching the Earth surface. If this idea is promising or not, I couldn't judge upon, but for sure it is worthwhile to take a closer look at.

    Well, nice, but I wonder how much cache per core will be available... With 48 cores a single memory bus becomes nothing more than one big (small? :) ) bottleneck.

    Apparently they have separated L2 cache per-tile (i.e., every two processors) and a high speed bus connecting the tiles. As usual, whether it will be fast enough will depend from the specific applications (which BTW is also true for other current multi-core architectures). The nice thing is of course that porting software to this architecture will be one order of magnitude less difficult than going to Tesla/Fermi/CELL architectures. Also, this architecture will also be suitable for other tasks than floating point computations (damn engineers polluting computer science :P) and it has the potential to be more future-proof than other solutions.
