Scientists who rock - 3 views

  •
I'll just leave this here... Found them through a recent publication of LeDoux in Trends in Cognitive Sciences
  •
Ah, and if there are no strong objections, from now on every brainstorming session shall commence with this: http://thebeautifulbrain.com/2010/10/ledoux-amygdaloids-brainstorm/2/

SuitSat-1: the spacesuit repurposed as a satellite - 2 views

  • In 2006, a figure was hurled out of the ISS and sent tumbling off into space. Here’s the story of SuitSat-1, the spacesuit repurposed as a satellite
  •
throwing empty spacesuits out of the ISS, converted into improvised satellites... now there's something I'd expect to see coming out of an ACT brainstorming session :)
  •
Here's the video of the satellite's "launch": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPx-KNTHGCA

  •
interesting how the evolution theory is evolving maybe we could add this topic to the brainstorming session?

nice link from toby .... it contains some of the things that I have been saying to the wind!!

Oh god, this is so beautiful... I'm not even going to quote the best parts, they are so many :)
  •
"employees need to be able to put their own ideas into practice" - but they also need to want to do it ....
  •
"In Galinsky's lab, people were more creative after watching a slide show about China: a 45-minute session increased creativity scores for a week." Hippo: we need more pictures from you!!
  •
"Do something only you would come up with-that none of your friends or family would think of." - according to them, this is one of their success recipes .... a recipe for the team?
  •
    >Get moving. I always said that fitness test should be included in the recruitment process!!!

HiRISE team gives public the oppotunity to propose imaging targets on Mars... i.e., they kind of stole our idea from the secondary payload brainstorm!

Optimised spatial planning to meet long term urban sustainability objectives - ScienceD... - 3 views

  •
for the ACT architects .... Can we do the same for the Moon Village? We brainstorm on some mathematical simplified objectives for growing the settlement (taking inputs from the modular growth, resources, terrain suitability etc ....), we define some simple rules for growth and we optimize. ..... easy peasy (i am serious)
  •
i agree, with most of the parameters that would actually be really cool. but doesn't it get very messy once economy plays a large factor?
  •
We can start studying the ideal case, or add also some economical constraints on the settlement layout ...

Kirobo, the first robotic companion-astronaut, is on its way to the ISS. - 1 views

  •
Kirobo, a knee-high talking robot with red boots and a black and white body, has blasted off from Japan for the International Space Station to test how machines can help astronauts with their work.
  •
Reminds me of the Robotic Servant from our brainstorm session :)

Radiation fears stalk stellar mission - 0 views

  • Concern over ESA's handling of the radiation issue caused Michael Perryman, former GAIA project scientist, to resign from the agency in 2008. But GAIA science-team member Lennart Lindegren, an astronomer at Lund Observatory in Sweden, is confident that GAIA's unprecedented accuracy will be feasible. GAIA researchers will continue to perform tests and calibrations until at least 2011, which will include irradiating the CCDs at space-like temperatures. Lindegren admits, however, that they can never be certain of success until the spacecraft is in orbit and starts sending back data.
  •
    metamaterials to stop radiations?
  •
hmm ... in the optical range it is already a bit tricky .... lets brainstorm a bit about it ... anything in the literature? Luzi?
  •
the components of the metamaterial need to have a size inversely proportional to the wavelenght, but here we are talking about high energy protons. So the idea was: is there metamaterials that change the electrical properties to solve this problem of holes in the material... but i dont have a clue !

File-Sharing Group Mulls a Floating Pirate Ship of Servers in the Sky | Popular Science - 1 views

  • The problem: Where can servers that store data frequently seen as unsavory be kept? The solution: Hanging from a giant balloon in the sky?
  • this idea isn't totally practical, since the group has limited resources and an airborne server presents a whole host of problems
  • ther suggestions included a low-level satellite
  •
outcome of a brainstorming, or an example of thinking out of the box ... :)
  •
should we try to help them :-) ?
  •
we should propose fractionned servers with CubeSats ...

Nuclear experts clean radioactive site with Cillit Bang - 1 views

  •
Use of COTS products for low-cost nuclear reprocessing plant decommissioning. I suggest a brainstorming session for potential spin-in technologies involving walking around digros.

Grappling With Space Debris - 1 views

  • Fortunately, as we speak, the very best space engineers are tackling the problem of how to tackle space debris and get it out of the way.
  •
    another of those articles...
  •
i guess when it says about the very best engineers tackling the problem as we speak, it refers to our brainstorms. How did they find out?
