The Cathedral and the Bazaar - 7 views

Albeit a bit dated, this is the classical Eric Raymond paper about the self-organizing open source model (the bazaar) compared to the usual closed software development model (the cathedral). Is science today more a bazaar or a cathedral?

funny .... this is exactly the book that Franco mentioned during one of the first meetings I had with him on the ACT, our research, how to organise, the potential of new ways of cooperating etc ...

Science today is a Basilica.

Linked Open Earth Observation Data for Precision Farming - 1 views
-
Lots of Earth Observation data has become available at no charge in Europe and the US recently and there is a strong push for more open EO data. With precision farming, advanced agriculture using GPS, satellite observations and tractors with on-board computers, the farming process is performed as accurately and efficiently as possible. This is achieved by combining data from earth observations with other geospatial sources such as cadastral data, data on the quality of the soil, vegetation and protected areas. This enables the farmer to find the optimal trade-off in maximizing his yield with minimal use of fertilizers and pesticides while respecting environmental protection.

Free software or a marketing move?

They have all the weight they need to pull this through. I'm dreaming of a day in which they will switch all Youtube videos to WebM, with all the Apple devices becoming useless to watch Internet video :) And Steve Jobs struggling to explain why, after wearing the mantle of open standards in the whole Flash vs HTML5 thing, he's now pushing H.264 against WebM... Anyway, in my view the less encumbered formats around the best for everyone's freedom.
Bitcoin P2P Currency: The Most Dangerous Project We've Ever Seen - 10 views

After month of research and discovery, we’ve learned the following:1. Bitcoin is a technologically sound project.2. Bitcoin is unstoppable without end-user prosecution.3. Bitcoin is the most dangerous open-source project ever created.4. Bitcoin may be the most dangerous technological project since the internet itself.5. Bitcoin is a political statement by technotarians (technological libertarians).*6. Bitcoins will change the world unless governments ban them with harsh penalties.

The benefits of a currency like this:a) Your coins can’t be frozen (like a Paypal account can be)b) Your coins can’t be trackedc) Your coins can’t be taxedd) Transaction costs are extremely low (sorry credit card companies)

An individual with the name -- or perhaps handle -- of Satoshi Nakamoto first wrote about bitcoins in a paper called Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.

well of course money is trust, and even more loans and credit and even more stock and bond markets. It all represents trust and expectations. However since the first banks 500 years ago and the first loans etc. etc., and as well the fact that bonds and currencies bring down whole countries (Greece lately), and are mainly controlled by large financial centres and (central) banks, banks have always been on the winning side no matter what and that isn't going to change easily. So if you are talking about these new currencies it would be a new era, not just a new currency. So should Greece convert its debt to bitcoins ;P ?

well, from 1936 to 1993 the central bank of france was owned by the state and was supposed to serve the general interest...

thanks - I was already wondering several times what had happened to this technique that he used at the talk we looked at several times when it was first uploaded ... good that they have made it open source! are they easy to use?
-
the easiest way to use them is: Google Docs > open/create a spreadsheet > Insert > Gadget > Charts > Motion Chart !! :) You have here a tutorial describing all the steps to get it running.
US Petition for building a Death Star 2016 - 3 views

By focusing our defense resources into a space-superiority platform and weapon system such as a Death Star, the government can spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.

Bad news from this frontier: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/response/isnt-petition-response-youre-looking As the Americans are not going for it, it might be a good opportunity for Europeans to make a real difference in space.

Merkel seems anyway a bit short of ideas ...
