This course provides a thorough introduction to the emerging field of Information Visualization.
The goal of Information Visualization is to use human perceptual capabilities to gain insights into large and abstract data sets that are difficult to extract using standard query languages.
Specific abstract data sets that will be studied are: symbolic, tabular, networked, hierarchical, or textual information.
The course objectives are:
* Provide a sound foundation in human visual perception and how it relates to creating effective information visualizations.
* Understand the key design principles for creating information visualizations.
* Study the major existing techniques and systems in information visualization.
* Evaluate information visualizations tools.
* Design new, innovative visualizations.
Visualizing Cultures was launched at MIT in 2002 to explore the potential of the Web for developing innovative image-driven scholarship and learning. The VC mission is to use new technology and hitherto largely inaccessible visual materials to reconstruct the past as people of the time visualized the world (or imagined it to be).
Topical units to date focus on Japan in the modern world and early-modern China. The thrust of these explorations extends beyond Asia per se, however, to address "culture" in much broader ways-cultures of modernization, war and peace, consumerism, images of "Self" and "Others," and so on.
Images of every sort are introduced and examined here-in partnership with contributing institutions and collections, and with the collaboration of experts devoted to transcending the printed word and hard-bound text.

Since taking a class that discussed Edward Tufte's work, I've been fascinated by turning information into visual data. His site contains many examples that you could easily spend hours on the site. I have. Plus, I spent several days browsing sites with articles, resources, and examples of infovis (information visualization) in action
a website that catalogs infographics from across the web. Visual.ly has more than 5,000 infographics arranged in twenty-one categories. Some of the infographics are useful displays of information and others, like the one below are just for fun.

A couple of infographic résumé sites, vizualize.me and re.vu, sprouted up that use your LinkedIn data to show your career stats. Just create an account, connect it to LinkedIn, and you get some graphs that show when and where you worked. It's a visual form of your LinkedIn profile with a goal to replace the "old" and "boring" résumé that uses just text.
The following video does an excellent job of exploring this idea, answering the following questions:
1. What is visual recording?
2. What tools (and apps) are available to make it work?
3. What do you need to understand to be able to do it?
4. Post-production, what do you do with the recordings when you've finished?
It is also honest, offering the pros and cons of each app, and of the iPad itself in various learning domains.
Think-Pair-Square - Students share with two other students after they have completed Think-Pair-Share (4-square).
Think-Pair-Pod-Share - A "Pod" is a sharing with a small group (a table group) - prior to sharing with the whole group. Students first share with a partner. Then bring all thoughts together as a table (pod) prior to sharing out with whole group.
Think-Write/Draw-Share - Students write or draw their own ideas before they pair up to discuss them with a partner. This allows students to more fully develop their own ideas before sharing.
Think-Pair-Share (reading strategies) - During "think" part students are asked to think in terms of summarizing, questioning, predicting, visualizing.
Once students understand all four of these areas, groups can be asked to use a variety in a single "think-pair-share". (One (or more) groups summarize, one (or more) groups visualize, etc…)
Think-Pair-Share (various perspectives) - After posing a question, ask pairs to "think" in terms of a different perspective.
A character in a story, a career, a historical figure. Etc…
These are good critical thinking prompts but aren't very visual. That is, most of them would be just as good without the visual. I'm thinking about what that means the visual brings to it that's not here. Possibly interpreting the visual?

Been getting a ton of requests for 'how to's and guides for creating decent visualizations and information designs. Made me think: maybe I could do some workshops in this area. I like developing ideas and working with people. Could be fun!
ImagePlot is a free software tool that visualizes collections of images and video of any size. It is implemented as a macro which works with the open source image processing program ImageJ.
