Ross Mayfield's Weblog: Power Law of Participation - 0 views

  •
Social software brings groups together to discover and create value. The problem is, users only have so much time for social software. The vast majority of users with not have a high level of engagement with a given group, and most tend to be free riders upon community value. But patterns have emerged where low threshold participation amounts to collective intelligence and high engagement provides a different form of collaborative intelligence. To illustrate this, Ross Mayfield drafted the Power Law of Participation. Interesting. Onion model? Lurkers vs Posters?

User Labor - A framework for sustaining user labor across the web - 0 views

  •
With User Labor, we propose an open data structure, User Labor Markup Language (ULML), to outline the metrics of user participation in social web services. Our aim is to construct criteria and context for determining the value of user labor for distribution. We believe that universality, transparency, and accessibility of user labor metrics will ultimately lead to more sustainable service cycles in social web. ULML outlines the metrics user labor, but does not provide direction for calculating its value. Calculating the value of labor is a fairly subjective matter, and formulations may vary from service to service. In order to deal with this subjectivity in the best way possible, the metrics of user labor need to be accessible and transparent as a basis for initiating actual value discussions. >> aka: PEERS IMS needs this info to calculate value!

Although the Internet is already a valuable information resource in medicine, there are important challenges to be faced before physicians and general users will have extensive access to this information. As a result of a research effort to compile a health-related Internet directory, new tools and strategies have been developed to solve key problems derived from the explosive growth of medical information on the Net and the great concern over the quality of such critical information. The current Internet search engines lack some important capabilities. We suggest using second generation tools (client-side based) able to deal with large quantities of data and to increase the usability of the records recovered. [...] The evaluation of the quality of health information available on the Internet could require a large amount of human effort. hierin wordt beschreven hoe de kwaliteit van online resources wordt bepaald door de citaties, oftewel links, op sites van experts die de resource citeren (en dus naartoe linken). Dat is 1 manier om kwaliteit te beoordelen.
