Digital Digressions: Blog Addiction Disorder (BAD) - 0 views

  •
    Yesterday something terrible happened. I got home early thinking I might try this 'working from home' thing, which means you can sit in the garden, stroke the cat AND pretend to be thinking about work at the same time. A nice concept, but rudely thwarted when I tried to turn on my computer. It all started when trying to log into Messenger - no success, Wireless network is showing full reception so I start scratching my head and wonder whether Airport Base Station is having hiccups. Go downstairs, plug laptop straight into router, router blinking happily showing what is known in IT circles as 'activity', to me I just know the thing isn't bust yet - but no, nada, niente - plenty of blinking but NO INTERNET. Panic grabs hold of me - this can't be...surely. Reset Router, faff around with ports and cables, unplug from phone filter, replug, phone works, router still OK, but Internet? No way, Jose. What to do?

The Art, Science and Business of Recommendation Engines - 0 views

  • During browsing, the user's attention (and their money) is up for grabs. By showing the user something compelling, a web site maximizes the likelihood of a transaction. So if a web site can increase the chances of giving users good recommendations, it makes more money. Obviously this is a difficult problem, but the incentive to solve it is very big. The main approaches fall into the following categories: Personalized recommendation - recommend things based on the individual's past behavior Social recommendation - recommend things based on the past behavior of similar users Item recommendation - recommend things based on the thing itself A combination of the three approaches above

Zigtag - 5 views

  •
    "Social tagging services like Faviki and Zigtag also allow end users to tag content using the Common Tag format." - http://www.diigo.com/06cbz
  •
    Zigtag's semantic tags allow you to tags with concepts rather than tags. This allows you to tag something in different ways (e.g. New York, newyork, NYC), and have it all mean the same thing. Search using the terms you want, e.g. find pages about New York City using NY, "New York", or even "Big Apple" - any of these will find every page about New York City. Semantic tagging means that Zigtag understands synonyms - we understand that "Big Apple" is the same thing as "New York". Semantic tagging means that everybody is tagging with the same terms that have meaning, which makes it easier for everybody to find what everyone else has tagged.

Exploring OAuth-Protected APIs :: Drive-by Digressions - 0 views

  •
    " From time to time I need to debug OAuth-protected APIs, checking response headers and examining XML and JSON payloads. curl generally rocks for this sort of thing, but when the APIs in question are protected with OAuth, things break down. Likewise for benchmarking (ab, httperf, etc.) and exploration-isn't it nice to browse APIs that return XML in Firefox? This needn't to be the case. Enter oauth-proxy This is why I wrote oauth-proxy. It does what it says on the tin: it acts a proxy server that transparently adds OAuth headers to requests."
