Virtual R&D Teams - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

  • Virtual R&D Teams From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search A virtual team (also known as a geographically dispersed team or GDT) is a group of individuals who work across time, space and organizational boundaries with links strengthened by webs of communication technology. Powell, Piccoli and Ives define virtual teams in their literature review article "as groups of geographically, organizationally and/or time dispersed workers brought together by information and telecommunication technologies to accomplish one or more organizational tasks [1]." Among the different definitions of virtual teams, the following concept is one of the most widely accepted definitions [2]: “Virtual teams are small temporary groups of geographically, organizationally and/or time dispersed knowledge workers who coordinate their work, predominantly with electronic information and communication technologies in order to accomplish one or more organization tasks” [3]. Virtual R&D team is a form of a virtual team, which includes the features of virtual teams and concentrates on R&D activities [4].

"Kurt Danis, CISSP-ISSEP * (1) Virtual teams lean towards a non-social environment - contrary to more social but not so productive environments. Productive individuals earnestly want to get the job done, but out of courtesy go along with the social crowd. In the virtual team environment, "socializing" may lean toward job objectives/challenges. Email, phone calls, and / or conference calls are focused to solve a specific goal. When the answer is obtained, the work moves ahead rapidly. (2) Depending on the caliber of professionals involved and the nature of the work environment, virtual teams may increase productivity significantly. Monitored piece-work environments will demonstrate visible and substantial gains. At the same time, where periodic metrics may show convincing gains, high personnel turn-over may be evident too. In the long-run, professional production environments may see high through-put when a competitive spin is added; and ultimately, the gain decreases as the daily grind becomes stressful or the learning curve flattens-out when the job takes on a more mundane perspective. (3) Motivated professionals may persevere on virtual teams given a carrot for bigger and better goals - in the context of an academic degree, a professional cert, or the hope of a new position is on the horizon. - former network certification and accreditation package validator (4 years) "

"Nader Ale Ebrahim * "Global and localized virtual R&D teams are believed to have high potential for the growth of SMEs. Due to the fast-growing complexity of new products coupled with new emerging opportunities of virtual teams, a collaborative approach is believed to be the future trend. This research explores the effectiveness of virtuality in SMEs' virtual R&D teams". This is a part of my paper entailed "The Effectiveness of Virtual R&D Teams in SMEs: Experiences of Malaysian SMEs" which is available online on http://eprints.um.edu.my/2162/1/10-2-03-Nader_IEMS.pdf or http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/cf_dev/AbsByAuth.cfm?per_id=1379350 . It is short but worth to read it. "

  • Chris Heath • Hi Xavier, There are a number of books on my shelves but two probably stand out. "Working Virtually" by Trina Hoefling and "Where in the world is my team?" by Terry Brake. Trina's is good on processes and preparing the people and organisation. Terry's takes a narrative approach and discusses his 6 C's (six performance zones) which creates a useful mental model for the challenges and solutions of leading virtual teams. Fundamentally, though, leadership of a virtual team is both somewhat similar to and very different from leading a co-located team. Consciously understanding what makes for success in the two different ways of working is a very good starting point! I can't think of a more exciting way of leadership. Have fun!

Organizacje pierwszej dekady XXI wieku działające w niezwykle dynamicznym, zmiennym i złożonym środowisku stają obecnie przed szeregiem ważnych wyzwań.
