"Title: Trustworthy in the eye of the beholder? A cognitive perspective on personal profile information in virtual project teams Authors: Rusman, Ellen Van Bruggen, Jan Sloep, Peter Koper, Rob Valcke, Martin Keywords: trust profile identity virtual team Issue Date: 11-Oct-2011 Abstract: Collaboration in virtual project teams heavily relies on interpersonal trust, for which perceived trustworthiness is an important determinant. This study provides insight in the foundation of trustors' information preferences to assess a trustee's professional trustworthiness in the initial phase of a virtual project team. We hypothesize that trustors in virtual teams prefer particular information elements since they provide them with relevant cues for trust warranting properties of a trustee. Starting from a list of commonly preferred information elements to inform trustworthiness assessments (n=226), we analyze explanations for these preferences with the help of a theory-grounded coding scheme. Results show that indeed respondents prefer information elements as they provide them with multiple cues to assess the trustworthiness of a trustee. Information elements providing unique cues could not be identified. Results of this study can inform the design of artifacts to get acquainted in the initial phase of a virtual project team. Munchen, Germany Abstract Open innovation research shows that idea competitions are a promising approach for integrating customers and that most innovations are a result of intensive collaboration (Franke and Shah, 2003; Gasco-Hernandez and Torres-Coronas, 2004; Nemiro, 2001; Sawhney et al., 2005). Thus, fostering collaboration among idea contributors might be a fruitful approach for unleashing the customers' entire creative potential and making idea competitions even more successful. This paper reports on a field study in which idea contributors could collaborate in an IT-based idea competition using the wiki technology. We tested whether user collaboration positively influences the quality of the submissions applying an in-depth analysis of idea quality. Our results show that user collaboration enhances idea quality and that inducing user collaboration is a viable design element for making idea competitions more effective. This contributes to a more successful design, implementation and operation of idea competitions, as well as to better outcomes. The article concludes with a discussion of customer groups collaborating in idea competitions (extrinsically and intrinsically motivated customers). Knowledge development and creation of a shared understanding among team members are often stressed as fundamental to successful innovation processes. This paper aims to address how use of ICT in team collaboration impacts on the creation of a shared understanding and knowledge development within the teams, and how these factors are important for organizations' innovation capabilities. Design/methodology/approach - Based on a review of the literature, the paper discusses how modern ICT may impact on the organization of innovative activities and organizations' innovation capabilities. Findings - Several important factors related to the use of ICT in teams working on innovation projects are highlighted. A conceptual model and directions for future research based on a literature review are proposed. Practical implications - Based on the discussion, a conceptual model is presented which highlights the need for well-functioning computer-mediated team interaction in order to realize the innovation potential of organizations. Originality/value - The paper emphasizes the re

"Bernardo T. Source College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, A227 Veterinary Medical Center, East Lansing, Michigan 48824, USA. tbernard@cvm.msu.edu Abstract 'A war against disease requires not only financial resources, sufficient technology, and political commitment, but also a strategy, operational lines of responsibility, and the capacity to learn along the way', according to J.D. Sachs. In our interdependent world, it is increasingly apparent that health is a global public good that requires collaboration across borders and generates transnational benefits. The same holds true for the information and knowledge necessary to uphold and defend it. It is only through collaboration that we can confront the complexity presented by host interactions and movement, genetic variability and environmental factors, ranging from chemical contamination to climate change. The Internet is an unprecedented tool for communication and collaboration which we need to use to best advantage for our purposes, be it to create value by combining data from various sources, harness mass reporting modalities, such as really simple syndication (RSS) feeds and blogs for surveillance and monitoring, participate in online ideas markets to spur research, use wikis to develop and share educational resources, or assemble virtual teams of experts as required. These are the skills for the 21st century which will facilitate disease prevention, early detection and rapid response to help protect human lives and livelihoods and to reduce the mass destruction of animals."
