As a set of practices that link the firm's value creating processes with its external environment, business development capabilities are a key factor in the success of IT SMEs. This article examines business development functions and business developer attributes in SMEs in the Information Technology Industry in Eastern Canada. The principal business development functions are finding profitable opportunities in business networks, developing and maintaining partnerships, providing support for new product development, and recognizing and responding to customer needs. The regional market and export markets require different business development capabilities. "Question What kind of software and online services are research labs using for social collaboration, and project, knowledge and lab management? There is a wide variety of cloud-based and locally installable software tools available for potentially enhancing the output of a research lab. These include (with examples): project management (Basecamp), wikis (Confluence), microblogging (Yammer), document management (Skydox), reference management (Mendeley), scientific collaboration platforms (colwiz), general online collaboration platforms (Zoho), e-notebooks (Labvantage), laboratory management systems (CambridgeSoft) and instant messaging (Skype). We are currently looking to improve the way we work in our lab regarding communication and data management. Being an academic research unit of about 80 people studying nanophotonics, we are currently generating huge amounts of data on network drives and paper notebooks, and communicating in a semi-random fashion. Everyone is using their own tools. Clearly there is much room for improvement, or is there? So, the question is, what kind of software services are other labs using? How did you identify the needs of the users, selected the tool and got everyone to use it? in Topics / Science 2.0 and Open Access Answer Share 2 Votes · 2 Answers · 4 hours ago All Answers (2) [Roi Paz] Roi Paz · 4.8 · Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya Our lab find Sparklix as our main e-notebook, wilki, project management, collaboration tool, document and files management. "Kurt Danis, CISSP-ISSEP * (1) Virtual teams lean towards a non-social environment - contrary to more social but not so productive environments. Productive individuals earnestly want to get the job done, but out of courtesy go along with the social crowd. In the virtual team environment, "socializing" may lean toward job objectives/challenges. Email, phone calls, and / or conference calls are focused to solve a specific goal. When the answer is obtained, the work moves ahead rapidly. (2) Depending on the caliber of professionals involved and the nature of the work environment, virtual teams may increase productivity significantly. Monitored piece-work environments will demonstrate visible and substantial gains. At the same time, where periodic metrics may show convincing gains, high personnel turn-over may be evident too. In the long-run, professional production environments may see high through-put when a competitive spin is added; and ultimately, the gain decreases as the daily grind becomes stressful or the learning curve flattens-out when the job takes on a more mundane perspective. (3) Motivated professionals may persevere on virtual teams given a carrot for bigger and better goals - in the context of an academic degree, a professional cert, or the hope of a new position is on the horizon. - former network certification and accreditation package validator (4 years) "

"Home > Vol 6, No 3 > Lesko, Jr. Incorporating Virtually Immersive Environments as a Collaborative Medium for Virtual Teaming Charles J. Lesko, Jr., Christine R. Russell Abstract Virtually immersive environments incorporate the use of various computer modelling and simulation techniques enabling geographically dispersed virtual project teams to interact within an artificially projected three-dimensional space online. This study focused on adoption of virtually immersive technologies as a collaborative media to support virtual teaming of both graduate and undergraduate-level project management students. The data and information from this study has implications for educators using virtually immersive environments in the classroom. In this study, we specifically evaluated two key components in this paper: 1) students' level of trust and; 2) students' willingness to use the technology, along with their belief about the virtual environment's ability to extend and improve knowledge sharing in their team work environment. We learned that while students did find the environment a positive add on for working collaboratively, there were students who were neither more nor less likely to use the technology for future collaborative ventures. Most of the students who were not very positive about the environment were "fence sitters" likely indicating needs related to additional training to improve communication skills. Finally, based on the full study results we have provided basic recommendations designed to support team trust building in the system along with interpersonal trust building to facilitate knowledge transfer and better strategic us of the technology. Virtual multicultural teams: real communication in the virtual world - Daily news in En... - 0 views

"Virtual multicultural teams: real communication in the virtual world Intercultural | Irina Budrina | August 8, 2011 8:43 am The following situation sounds common enough for Romania, a country which has been chosen by many companies as their outsource location. The cheaper and more skilled labor force, plus the expansion of online technologies make it easy for Romanians to tele work with colleagues in other countries. But how easy is it to communicate with them? By Irina Budrina Let's start from the following situation: A company based in the United States develops multimedia software with a team of 7 free-lance developers located in 3 different countries, including Romania. The team was formed through Internet chat groups or interpersonal relations and is completely virtual. All developers are under commercial contract with the main company. The company has no offices and developers have never met with each other. All employees tele-work from home and informally communicate through electronic means. Each developer has specific tasks and is in charge of one part of the software development. They plan the work together at the beginning of each project. They work on the same data file and post their contributions on a collaborative platform. The company's job is to assemble the different pieces developed by the tele-workers. Many companies use virtual teams of geographically dispersed people to work on short- and long-term projects. A long-term "virtual" team is one that conducts its work almost entirely through electronic technology. Such technology and the expansion of global business have changed the work environment for organizations of all sizes, allowing even small companies to compete in the international market place. Communicating across cultures using technology can be a difficult task. It requires understanding the advantages and limitations of technology and how to build relationships via technology. Though it gives an opportunity for fre
