How to Manage Virtual Teams - 0 views

  • We studied 80 software development teams from 28 labs worldwide (including labs in Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India and the United States). The labs varied in size (employing between 20 and 5,500 software developers), and each team contained up to nine members. Our research included those software development projects that were completed within 12 months prior to data collection. A total of 392 managers, team leaders and team members participated in the study, and data from multiple respondents were used to ensure the validity of results and to overcome common method bias.

  • [edit] Virtual teamsDevelopments in communications technologies have seen the emergence of the virtual work team. A virtual team is a group of people who work interdependently and with shared purpose across space, time, and organisation boundaries using technology to communicate and collaborate. Virtual team members can be located across a country or across the world, rarely meet face-to-face, and include members from different cultures.[4] Ale Ebrahim, N., Ahmed, S. & Taha, Z. in their recent (2009) literature review paper, added two key issues to definition of a virtual team “as small temporary groups of geographically, organizationally and/ or time dispersed knowledge workers who coordinate their work predominantly with electronic information and communication technologies in order to accomplish one or more organization tasks”.[5] Many virtual teams are cross-functional and emphasis solving customer problems or generating new work processes. The United States Labour Department reported that in 2001, 19 million people worked from home online or from another location, and that by the end of 2002, over 100 million people world-wide would be working outside traditional offices.[6]

Benefits and Pitfalls of Virtual R&D Teams: An Empirical Study-知来论文发表中心 - 0 views

  • Benefits and Pitfalls of Virtual R&D Teams: An Empirical Study 下载全文 Abstract:In this paper, advantages and drawbacks of virtual teams in research and development (R&D) are studied. With the globalization of commercial practices and advances in information and communication technologies, increasing numbers of enterprises are establishing cross-functional, geographically distributed virtual teams. Virtual teams in R&D are designed to access external resources and knowledge to maximize the competitive advantage from limited labor and resources. A survey has been conducted on 210 Malaysian and Iranian manufacturing companies, aimed to investigate the characteristics of R&D collaborations and extract the main advantages/disadvantages ’ factors of virtual teams. These factors can be a guide line for R&D manager to achieve better performance of virtual teams. Creating a Company Culture with a Virtual Team | BostInno - 0 views

    " Creating a Company Culture with a Virtual Team July 11th, 2012 by Caroline McAlpine Posted in company culture, Management, teams, Virtual Worker Beehive Media +1 0 1 inShare When I arrived at Beehive Media last fall to take on my new role as the Client Services Director, one corporate behavior I had to quickly shed and transform was having historically only managed a core team face-to-face. Beehive Media's team is a virtual one - geographically dispersed in the greater Boston and New York areas, as well as Ukraine. Experts have studied virtual teams for the last three decades and from everything I've seen and read in the last six months, managing one is both an art and a science (sometimes a hair raising science - our CEO has no hair…coincidence?) A lot goes into managing a team across great distances, but with practice, a virtual team can be a great thing. When considering your virtual team, key questions arise such as when should we meet face-to-face? How will we communicate? What software solutions will help us manage and complete our work? How do you manage a virtual team's workload? When should we meet face-to-face? Convening a virtual team face-to-face makes complete sense; the real question to immediately ask is when and why. When you consider the stages of team development (organizational development) -forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning (based on Bruce Tuckman's model)-it's most critical to meet as a team in the beginning when it's newly formed. It's important to meet early since people don't know each other. It's also an opportunity to create a team culture with norms, establish ground rules and expectations. Finally it's key to start to develop integral relationships among team members. Of course it's also key to meet face to face at critical points in a project - some things are better solved in person. Identifying these times is key and better to err on the side of meeting too often at the begi

    "Electronic Commerce Research March 2012, Volume 12, Issue 1, pp 31-51 Virtual business operations, e-commerce & its significance and the case of Turkey: current situation and its potential Aytaç Gökmen Look Inside Get Access Abstract 21st century is the age of high technologies penetrated into business leading to virtual businesses and e-commerce applications combined with electronic business (e-business) structures. Virtual businesses are independent and/or partly dependent organizations that have flexible and agile structures to respond the altering business conditions. Yet, electronic commerce (e-commerce) is the exchange of goods and services over the Internet. Both virtual businesses and e-commerce operations enable organizations to have fluid structures, modify the changing conditions, lower expenses, access to new markets and attain new consumers. The e-commerce applications have also been increasing in Turkey at a great pace but not significantly when compared to the total trade volume. For, the aim of this paper is to focus on the virtual businesses, e-commerce, harmonization of the conventional business structures with e-commerce and emphasize the importance of the e-commerce applications in Turkey resting on dependable national and international publications and data. With respect to the research made, it is possible to state that the e-commerce volume of Turkey is increasing as a remedy to cover the foreign trade deficit, but it is still not sufficient when compared to the total trade volume. Additionally, even though Turkey possesses an efficient e-government mechanism and e-signature law to enhance the volume of its e-commerce, the lack of cooperation among parties and standardization as well as the difficulty in adoption of digital transactions would be issues to be tackled in order to develop e-commerce in Turkey."

The Benefits of Going Virtual | DemGen Inc. - Virtual Sales, Marketing, Customer Servic... - 0 views

    " In honor of Cyber Monday, we're celebrating the benefits of working virtually! Increased Productivity Virtual teams aren't limited by the distractions of typical offices. There are no water cooler distractions or constant interruptions. Many studies have proven that virtual teams work longer and harder than their counterparts in office buildings. Better Tools & Systems To effectively work in cyberspace, virtual teams utilize a number of tools and systems to communicate and stay organized. This tends to lead to increased creativity and accountability. Expert Team When not limited by proximity (good parking, subway, childcare), you are free to hire the best of the best. This opens up your business to a world of opportunities, literally. Reduced Costs Most virtual teams are paid by the hour or project, meaning you only pay for what you require. You don't pay for coffee or lunch breaks, computers or any other of the many expenses required for a typical office. *And keep in mind that there are reduced costs to the virtual support team, with no parking, travel, lunch, dry cleaning, etc. Overall, win, win, win for all including the environment. Less Impact on the Environment By eliminating the need to commute, virtual workers eliminate pollution from transportation. Eliminating commuting time also ensures virtual workers start their day fresh and ready to dive in. The bottom line is that virtual teams are constantly growing and are here to stay. As technology continues to develop, more and more individuals will choose to work virtually. Corporations have already begun to follow suit and will continue to do so as they realize the potential benefits."

HAL-SHS :: [hal-00787805, version 1] Process Construct in the Virtual R&D Teams - 0 views

    "HAL : hal-00787805, version 1 Fiche détaillée Récupérer au format Proceedings of the Asia Pacific Industrial Engineering & Management Systems Conference 2012, Patong Beach, Phuket : Thaïlande (2012) Process Construct in the Virtual R&D Teams Nader Ale Ebrahim 1, Shamsuddin Ahmed 1, Salwa Hanim Abdul Rashid 1, Zahari Taha 2, Mohammadjafari Marjan 1 (03/12/2012) literature proves the importance of the process role in the effectiveness of virtual research and development (R&D) teams for new product development (NPD). However, the factors that make process construct in a virtual R&D team are still unclear. The manager of virtual R&D teams for NPD does not know which items of process should be used. To address the gap and answer the question, the study presents a set of factors that make a process construct. The proposed construct modified by finding of the field survey. We empirically examine the relationship between construct, dimensions and its factors by employing the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). A measurement model built base on the 13 preliminary factors that extracted from literature review. The result shows 9 factors out of 13 factors maintaining to make process construct. These factors can be grouped into two dimensions namely generating report and collaborative system. The findings can help new product development managers of enterprises to concentrate in the main factors for leading an effective virtual R&D team. In addition, it provides a guideline for future research. 1 : University of Malaya (UM) Department of Engineering Design and Manufacture, Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya 2 : Faculty of Manufacturing Engineering and Management Technology, University Malaysia Pahang (UMP) Education Domaine : Sciences de l'ingénieur/Autre Sciences de l'Homme et Société/Gestion et management Économie et finance quantitative/Gestion des risques Mots Clés : Collaboration teams - questionnaires performance - cross-functional t
