"Dealing with Virtual R&D Teams in New Product Development Nader Ale Ebrahim, Shamsuddin Ahmed and Zahari Taha MPRA Paper from University Library of Munich, Germany Abstract: National and global collaboration in research and development (R&D) is becoming increasingly important in creating the knowledge that makes research and business more competitive. Multinational enterprises have increased their research and development (R&D) investment in different countries. These multiple sites encourage the development of more ideas, due to the varied international backgrounds in global networks and the knowledge spillovers. In order to secure the viability of business processes, services and products R&D teams need to access and retrieve information from as many sources as possible. From the other perspective virtual teams are important mechanisms for organizations seeking to control scarce resources across geographic and other boundaries. Moreover, virtual collaboration has become vital for most organizations. This is particularly true in the context of designing new product and innovative services. In this paper all the major aspects of Virtual R&D team are discussed in technical terms. The paper provides an integral definition and characterization of virtual R&D team. The potential value that is created by virtual R&D teams for new product development is explored. Lastly, pertinent practical guidelines and implications are presented. "Virtual teams: a literature review ByNader Ebrahim, S Ahmed and Zahari Taha Abstract In the competitive market , virtual teams represent a growing response to the need for fasting time-to- market, low-cost and rapid solutions to complex organizational problems. Virtual teams enable organizations to pool the talents and expertise of employees and non-employees by eliminating time and space barriers . Nowadays, companies are heavily investing in virtual team to enhance their performance and competitiveness. Despite virtual teams growing prevalence, relatively little is known about this new form of team. Hence the study offers an extensive literature review with definitions o f virtual teams and a structured analysis of the present body of knowledge of virtual teams. First, we distinguish virtual teams from conventional teams , different types of virtual teams to identify where current knowledge applies. Second, we distinguish what is needed for effective virtual team considering the people, process and technology point of view and underlying characteristics of virtual teams and challenges they entail. Finally, we have identified an d extended 12 key factors that need to be considered, and describes a methodology focused on supporting virtual team working, with a new approach that has not been specifically addressed in the existing literature and some guide line for future research extracted. "Virtual Teaming As a 21st century freelance editor I have extensive experience with effective virtual teaming, otherwise known as working remotely, connecting and communicating with clients through information communication technology such as email, telephone and video conferencing (Skype). While many individual clients are quite comfortable with virtual team work with their editor, many academic organisations, businesses, and institutions are now learning of the benefits of virtual teaming and are increasingly turning to virtual team work as a cost effective way to hire the best people - specialists who can get an assignment done quickly and well. In today's increasingly globalised world, with it's increasingly casualized workforce, virtual team work is an essential business practice for any organization that has, or wishes to have, a truly global vision and reach. In the past I have worked virtually as a copy-editor and transcriber with the Max Planck Institute as well as a proofreader with Napier University. And I currently work as manager of virtual teams with the Visual Anthropology Review (Book Reviews Editor) and Versita (Managing/Aquisitions Editor). As a manager of virtual teams I use Internet communication and the quick and accurate sharing of documents through email, Dropbox and other cloud-based systems, and team-collaboration tools such as Microsoft SharePoint to communicate with other team members and share work. By organising the work of various virtual teams across the globe I am able to use differences in time-zone and regional specialisation to best advantage. My experience with virtual teaming also means that I am familiar with employment laws and the organization of contracts in a variety of countries across Europe and North America. These are skills that, as your freelance editor, I will bring to every project that I complete for you. You can be assured that our communications will be clear, concise, and effective; that work w"

"Virtual R&D teams in small and medium enterprises: a literature review Ale Ebrahim, Nader and Ahmed, S. and Taha, Zahari (2009) Virtual R&D teams in small and medium enterprises: a literature review. [Journal (Paginated)] Full text available as: [img] PDF - Published Version 387Kb Abstract Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the driving engine behind economic growth. While SMEs play a critical role in generating employment and supporting trade, they face numerous challenges, the prominent among them are the need to respond to fasting time-to-market, low-cost and rapid solutions to complex organizational problems. Towards that end, research and development (R & D) aspect deserves particular attention to promote and facilitate the operations of SMEs. Virtual R & D team could be a viable option. However, literature shows that virtual R & D teaming in SMEs is still at its infancy. This article provides a comprehensive literature review on different aspects of virtual R & D teams collected from the reputed publications. The purpose of the state-of-the-art literature review is to provide an overview on the structure and dynamics of R & D collaboration in SMEs. Specifying the foundation and importance of virtual teams, the relationship between virtual R & D team and SMEs has been examined. It concludes with the identification of the gaps in the existing literature's and calls for future research. It is argued that setting-up an infrastructure for virtual R & D team in SMEs still requires a large amount of engineering efforts and deserves consideration at top level management. "Virtual Teams for New Product Development - An Innovative Experience for R&D Engineers Nader Ale Ebrahim, Shamsuddin Ahmed and Zahari Taha MPRA Paper from University Library of Munich, Germany Abstract: New interaction tools such as internet allow companies to gain valuable input from research and development (R&D) engineers via virtual teams. Consequently, engineers also get more expertise in diminutive time frames. Virtual R&D teams present the key impetus to the technology acquisition process. The present knowledge-economy era is characterized by short product life-cycles. Virtual R&D teams may reduce time-to-market, make available a large pool of new product know-how and provide greater flexibilities, which are the key success factors in a competitive market. This comprehensive review contains almost 100 references and covers the recent literature with emphasis on the topic. The review has focused on authentic and reputed publications and extracts the results. This article presents the type of virtual teams and their main features and explains how virtual R&D team can play a prominent role in developing new products. The article is evolved future study guideline and also illustrates how to apply virtual interaction tools and integrate engineers into the innovation process. Management of virtual R&D teams in new product development (NPD) processes in an innovative, effective and efficient is of a high importance, but the issue has been poorly addressed in the previous studies. Findings show that virtual R&D team provides valuable input for new product development and R&D engineers are able to attain virtual experience. "Home > Vol 16, No 2 (2012) > Olson Towards A Theoretical Model Of The Impacts Of Incorporating Webcams In Virtual Teams Joel Olson, Lynn Grinnell, Chad McAllister, Frank Appunn, Kimberly Walters Abstract Virtual teams have proliferated over the last ten years as businesses realized benefits in coordinating across geographic and departmental boundaries. Studies of virtual teams, however, have revealed uneven success in team effectiveness. With the increase in quality and availability of video over the Internet, there are opportunities to improve effectiveness of virtual teams by integrating videoconferencing into synchronous meetings. The purpose of this qualitative study is to evaluate the impact of video on team interactions and effectiveness. Results showed a relationship between the added richness and authenticity brought about by video and increased effectiveness, while also showing a relationship between the increased stress of learning new technology and decreased effectiveness."

Chris Ducker: The Art of Managing a Virtual Team - Online Collaboration - 0 views

"Chris Ducker: The Art of Managing a Virtual Team By Thursday Bram Nov. 9, 2010, 9:00am PT 3 Comments inShare Chris Ducker has made an art out of outsourcing. He not only writes about effectively building virtual business systems and teams at Virtual Business Lifestyle, but he also operates Virtual Staff Finder. Ducker's in-depth knowledge of how to work with team members who may be on the other side of the world gives him special insight into managing teams virtually. He answered a few questions for us about his process. Thursday Bram: How do you make sure that, day in and day out, the team members you work with virtually stay on top of your projects? Chris Ducker: I use a project management system that I had one of my staff program - it's very close to Basecamp, but watered-down. I also have my personal assistant speak with them on a daily basis, too. I am not a major slave-driver with my virtual assistants. I allow them to pretty much do whatever they want, and work whenever they want‚ just as long as the work itself gets done and to the high level that I expect. Thursday: What training or tools do you think someone interested in working with a team virtually needs? Ducker: This really changes from one case to another.
