English 101 - Fall 2010

As the use of instant messaging and text messaging has increased, so has the use of abbreviated language in formal writings. Teachers have become increasingly astonished at the abbreviations and spelling errors that have found in students' academic writings. Some of the students even admit to not even noticing the use of this language in their papers. They use it so frequently that they do not notice it as being out of place. Some teachers find this appalling and some find it as a way to spark students' creativity.

EBSCO. Web. 21 Nov. 2010. Recently, more studies have been performed to examine newly developed addictions to technologies such as the Internet and cell phones. Some of these studies have found that full-time students are more at risk to develop these addictions and that these addictions are related to some psychological and behavioral disorders. To see if these observations are correct, a study was performed in which three hundred and thirty-seven college students participated. The first thing that was determined was that there was not a correlation between internet or cell phone over-use and substance abuse or gambling addiction. The second was that there was a correlation between technology over-use and psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. The third was that healthy behavior and technology over-use are not related.

In the article, Price goes over how journalism has changed through the years and more recently with the internet. He gives standards that have been aimed for throughout its history and then clearly gives the differences between news and opinion. With the use of "news-like" websites, this seperation and standards are not always used and seen. With the pressure of the internet and the shrinking news staff, serious journalist wonder what will survive and rise up in the next few decades.

It talks about the different learning behaviors relating to male and females. It states that men enroll in school in order to achieve something, while women enrol for the sake of desire for learning. Men are said to pick up at task and master it until picking up a new one while women work with more than one task at the same time. Men and women have different learning, writing, and reading techniques from one another.\n\n

This article talks about the problems that this country faces with low health literacy among their patients. It talks about some of the reasons for people having low health literacy and also when the health literacy problem started to gain the interest of the country. This article states some ways to identify patients that have low health literacy. It also tell you how to talk to a patient with low health literacy to avoid the most confusion.

On this opinion page for The New York Times, Stephan Dubner talks about the effects of having mandatory calorie postings for certain restraunts. He believes that because the calorie content is shown, people bought more food.

This source provides explanations for why there are differences in literacy for genders. It gives five 5 reasons as to why these differences occur. These reasons are the following: evaluative bias, home socialization, role and societal expectations, male psychology, and equity policy. These five reasons explain why males begin ahead of females, but by the time school ended the gaps closed and women out performed males.

The article talks about how the students' research behavior affect the tradtional method of library research in first-year writing courses and then gives an alternate method using libbraries and internet search tools. They details the obligation that educators place on students to use the tools to find relevant information. They present a human-computer interaction study that offers a possible explanation as to the interaction of the students and their non-academic information searches.

This Article is about how scholars would always focused on males and their math skill but overlook females. They look into why famales have diadvantages come about and how it keeps increasing but they also are good at certin maths. You will see the contrast between the males and females.

Comeaux, Eddie, and C. Keith Harrison. "Faculty and male student athletes: racial differences in the environmental predictors of academic achievement." This article is talking about how outside environmental variables affect the academic achievements of college athletes. It also talks about the varying types of athlete to faculty interaction. A certain study shows that black and white athletes do not benefit equally from this interaction. The author is inferring that black and white athletes are treated much differently, in some situations at least. Faculty and students are now discussing how to fix this problem in order to improve communication and the experience of college athletics.

In this, Schneider explores how the internet is affecting gifted students in how they find resources that their libraries just can't possibly contain. Within the last decade the internet has become a major tool and curriculum are being changed to go along with it. The ones that are excelling are the students that can process large amounts of information quickly and relatively accurately.

EBSCO. Web. 17 Nov. 2010. This journal is based on a survey done on almost 7000 college students. The purpose was to see how they spent their credit card money, and what knowledge, if any, they possessed. Financial knowledge was huge in this study when it came to smart spending. However, the article also says that many college students that had a high level of intelligence when it came to financial knowledge still had large credit card balances. This journal article shows that even people who are educated in financial literacy still can have major credit card debts and problems with spending.

Talks about the major risk and protective factors are being identified and integrated into screening, prevention, and treatment programs to optimize interventions designed to reduce drinking problems among adolescents and young adults. This article is about the cognitive effects high-risk drinking has on college students. It explains how underage alcohol use is connected to brain damage and neurocognitive deficits, with implications for learning and intellectual development.

This article talks about how the teachers of America want to change the gender gap. Between 1990 and 2007 there has not been much change in the gender gap in math. Teachers have goals of changing this so that both genders are on the same level. There are programs out there that are teaching current and future teachers of how to teach to both genders. Also they are teaching early childhood teachers how to make sure that the gap does not start so early.
