"TVET experts from the European Union met in Brussels on 17 November to discuss the preliminary findings of a study on the Internationalization of TVET in EU countries, and the European Commission's role in this. The purpose of the study is to map policies and practices from the EU, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland), Australia and five International Organizations that support international cooperation in TVET, including UNESCO. A set of recommendations for future actions at the European and national levels will be included in the study's final report. UNESCO was represented at the meeting by Katerina Ananiadou, programme specialist at UNESCO-UNEVOC. The study was commissioned by the Directorate-General for Education and Culture and carried out by International http://www.icfi.com. The Commission and the contractors gathered feedback on the preliminary findings from national and international experts. Their feedback will be incorporated in the final version of the study, which is due to be published in December 2014."

"CIARD, with the support of the GFAR Secretariat and FAO, organized an E-discussion from 20 October until 10 November 2014 for global participation on the Rights of Farmers to Data, Information and Knowledge. The outputs of the E-discussion and supplementary research will be used to develop a briefing paper for policy makers, actors and stakeholders on the rights of farmers for data, information and knowledge."

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is a critical element in supporting and accelerating development, inclusive growth and poverty reduction through economic transformation and job creation. Formal vocational training and new forms of skills development should equip people with the skills enabling them to get good jobs and to face the key challenges posed by globalisation, the informal economy and, in the shorter term, recovery from the global crisis.

Rural development and agriculture are essential to eradicating poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. The EU supports various initiatives in the field of sustainable agriculture with a view to reducing poverty, increasing food security and protecting natural resources.

Al Idrisi II is a program of short-term academic mobility for nationals of Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, and the European Union. The program supports undergraduate, doctoral, post-doctoral, and staff mobility. The "International Cooperation Cells" define subject areas that include salinization of agricultural soils, non-conventional sources of irrigation water for olive growing, environment and renewable energy, and many others across the sciences and humanities. The application deadline is 12 January 2016.

Managers of universities and colleges across Africa have pledged to accelerate reforms in agricultural education. This follows successful completion of a 4 year programme on Strengthening Africa's Strategic Agricultural Capacity for Impact on Development (SASACID). The programme was implemented by ANAFE through 16 pilot institutions across Africa and supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

"The Ministry of Education in Seychelles is implementing a new national curriculum framework adopting a competency based approach. In order to support the MoE in its endeavours, IBE-UNESCO co-organized a curriculum design workshop with over 50 education officers, primary and secondary teachers, educators from professional centres and other educational institutions in February 2016. The EGALE project will support partner HEIs in the development of an international consortium and new third level curricula (PhD) complying with international standards and capitalising on local expertise, including the spread of innovative and powerful teaching technologies such as distance learning. Relevant staff of the participating HEIs will be targeted to increase their qualifications.

WYG and Natural Resources Institute (NRI) are pleased to launch the call for concept notes for the Sustainable Agricultural Intensification Research and Learning Programme in sub-Saharan Africa (SAIRLA) research opportunity. SAIRLA is a five-year programme, from 2015 to 2020, which will commission research and facilitate learning to understand different ways of achieving Sustainable Agricultural Intensification (SAI) and their developmental implications. Its key focus is on assessing how SAI can be promoted in ways that enable women and poorer smallholders in Africa to participate in and benefit from agricultural development through SAI approaches. SAIRLA's research projects will generate new evidence and decision-making support tools to help decision makers create an enabling environment for poorer smallholder farmers, especially women and youth, to engage in Sustainable Agricultural Intensification.

Ce module est principalement destinés à des personnes qui interviennent soit en aval des filières agricoles (commercialisation en gros, import/export, transformation agroalimentaire, distribution), soit à des personnes qui interviennent dans le conseil, l'expertise ou la régulation des filières agricoles. Il peut aussi être utilisé pour des formations d'étudiants en université ou en formation professionnelle dans le secteur agroalimentaire ou économique. L'objectif général de ce module est de faire comprendre aux acteurs de l'aval des filières et à ceux travaillant sur l'ensemble des filières agricoles la spécificité de ces filières en termes de risques et de proposer des outils et des stratégies pour améliorer les relations commerciales et construire des chaînes de valeur performantes. Comme pour le module destiné aux producteurs, ce module peut être librement adapté pour les besoins et spécificité de chaque filière.

The USAID-supported East Africa Trade and Investment Hub, Syngenta and the Inter Region Economic Network (IREN), have launched the second edition of the agribusiness competition dubbed "Young Innovators in Agribusiness Competition." This follows last year's successful Agribusiness competition that attracted over 800 participants from sub-Saharan Africa. Out of the 35 youth finalists, ten have gone on to win other prizes in the energy and agribusiness sectors; ten have expanded and retained their agro-related enterprises and 15 are employed or pursuing higher education. This year's competition is open to East African youth aged 18-35 years, who reside in the East African Community, Ethiopia, Seychelles, Mauritius or Madagascar, and have a start-up or small and medium sized enterprise (SME) involved in the agricultural value chain.
