With three-quarters of all stocks being overfished, there is a general consensus that there is a need to reform the European Union's (EU) fisheries policy. Over the past two years the European Commission (EC) has outlined far-reaching policy proposals which hope to achieve long-term sustainability of fishing stock within Europe. Part of the proposals include the introduction of the "European Maritime and Fisheries Fund" (EMFF). The policy, which complements the EC's Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), seeks to introduce a new fund for the EU's maritime and fisheries policies for the period 2014-2014 and aims to deliver growth, jobs and sustainable fisheries ring fencing €6.5 billion for the financial period.

"(25/04/2014) The European Union and the Republic of Senegal have agreed a new Fisheries Partnership following a successful third round of talks in Dakar, Senegal, on the 24th and 25th April. The five year Protocol fixes the fishing opportunities for EU vessels, the EU's financial contribution, and the terms of support for the Senegalese fisheries sector. "

Speech by Maria Damanaki, European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries at the GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean) Annual Session Meeting, Rome.

"The 1st Regional Conference 'Sustainable Fisheries in the South-Western Indian Ocean: the importance of the Education, Management and Governance' took place in Mahajanga (Madascar) on the 10th and 11th of September and it helped to be a meeting point for academics, researchers, managers and civil society in general. During two days the discussions were focused on the importance of the fisheries resources as a source of food and wealth for the region; the different problems that challenges its sustainability like overfishing, destructive fishing practices and habitat destruction; and the need for a good management system that ensures sustainability."

ESKO FLAG covers the coastal region of the Gulf of Finland. This is an area with a long tradition of professional small-scale coastal fishing, though the number of registered full-time fishermen has been steadily declining over the past 25 years and it is increasingly difficult to get new and younger people to continue this traditional activity. In recent years, questions have been raised about the sustainability of fishing activities in this area. Notably, WWF Finland publishes a yearly consumer guide, which classifies the main types of fish caught in this area, especially salmon and whitefish, as endangered, threatened or protected species, and recommends consumers not to buy them. To compound the problem, there are also some conflicts between fishing professionals, recreational fishing and fishing tourism concerning the exploitation of fish stocks in the area.

Technical Assistance to the EU-RGoC Programme entitled ''Promotion of inclusive and sustainable growth in the Agricultural Sector: Fisheries and Livestock''

The United States Agency for International Development's Maximizing Agricultural Revenue through Knowledge, Enterprise Development and Trade Project promotes more sustainable and efficient use of aquaculture and fishery resources in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region with an emphasis on the Lower Mekong Initiative countries.

"(17/07/2013) The European Commission has this week adopted an updated list of vessels that cannot land or sell their fish in the EU as they have been identified as taking part in illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU). The list comprises vessels included in the IUU lists adopted by regional fisheries management organisations (RFMOs) around the world. "

"Un nouveau rapport de l'OCDE intitulé « Evading the net: Tax crime in the fisheries sector » (Entre les mailles du filet : la fraude fiscale dans le secteur de la pêche) a été publié en novembre dernier. Il confirme que l'analyse des délits commis dans le secteur de la pêche commence traditionnellement avec le problème de la pêche illicite, non déclarée et non réglementée (INN). Cependant, « l'on déplore une activité criminelle plus générale due aux mêmes vulnérabilités qui permettent à la pêche INN de se produire - une gouvernance et une application des règlements déficientes dans certains pays où les navires de pêche sont enregistrés ; la difficulté à identifier les véritables propriétaires des entreprises de pêche et des navires, et des problèmes logistiques pour surveiller les activités des navires en mer »."

"SPAIN - The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment welcomes the continued fisheries agreement between the EU and Madagascar for the next four years, which will replace the current agreement when it expires on 31 December. "

"The largest European Commission research project is being developed to enhance the European aquaculture production by removing production bottlenecks of emerging species, producing new products and accessing new markets. It is Diversify project, which is funded under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission and had its kickoff meeting at the Hellenic Center for Marine Research in Greece in January 2014. Coordinated by Dr. Constantinos C Mylonas of the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture, a total of 38 partners from Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Israel, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, the United Kingdom, Germany and Hungary have participated in this 5-year-long research. The Netherlands is represented by Wageningen University's DLO, The National Institute for Fisheries Studies and the Technical University of Eindhoven."

The summit is organized by CCARDESA, SADC and Agriculture Research Council (ARC-South Africa) and co-hosted by Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) in South Africa.

"In the last 30 years, aquaculture has experienced an unprecedented development in global animal production with an average yearly growth rate of over 10% between 1980 and 2000 (FAO 2010). Over the same period, capture fisheries saw their progression gradually grind to a standstill and growth stopped in 1995. "

"Speaking at the signing ceremony on the 14th November, 2014 at Grand Hotel, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), COMESA Secretary General Sindiso Ngwenya said the Regional CAADP Compact spells out priority areas for trans-boundary investments in the agriculture sector in COMESA. The first is increased agriculture production and productivity focusing on staple foods, livestock, fisheries and forest produce. The second is removing barriers to agriculture trade while the third is reducing social and economic vulnerability."
