Marocco - Program on rural structure (Vol. 2 of 2) : Marocco - Dimensions structurelles... - 0 views

  •
"Morocco has a population of about thirty million inhabitants, 45 percentage of who live in rural areas. This rate has been declining steadily for the past fifty years, though the rural exodus rate seems to have slowed down over the past decade. With a population growth rate that has also slowed down (1.4 percentage per year), the country is going through a demographic transition, or 'demographic windfall', with a significant increase in the working population estimated at 11.2 million people in 2005. On the whole, agriculture employs 43 percentage of the economically active population, but this rate goes up to 80 percentages in rural areas. Keeping in mind the 'entries' and 'exits' from the work force, the additional number of the individuals able to work was estimated in 2005 at 460,000 people, and the additional number of jobseekers is estimated at 380,000 per year for the next ten years. Engagement with rural organizations at field level, and dialogue at regional and international levels, are articulated as mutually reinforcing processes. Fully aligned with IFAD's strategic objectives, and rooted in concrete partnership and collaboration at national and regional levels, the Forum meets every two years for global consultation, in conjunction with IFAD's Governing Council. The forthcoming global meeting of the Farmers' Forum will be held between 17 and 20 February 2014. "

Decentralization: overcoming challenges, achieving success - 0 views

"Kenya organized a national policy seminar to discuss IIEP research findings In the past few years, IIEP has coordinated extensive research on the implementation of decentralization in the education sector in Eastern and Southern Africa, in particular in Kenya, Lesotho, and Uganda, with a focus on one actor - the District Education Office - and one policy - school grants. The research has been conducted with technical and financial support from UNICEF, and in collaboration with Ministries of Education and national research institutions. While the research findings have been discussed during policy seminars organized at the regional level (Entebbe, Uganda, in February 2010, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in March 2012), the next step is to hold in-depth discussions with the main stakeholders at the national level. The PP is an annual high-level partnership platform, bringing together key stakeholders such as African governments, policy makers, civil society organisations and farmers' organisations to assess progress made in implementing the CAADP goals."

IFDC Training Program: Linking Farmers to Markets in Africa, July 1-5, 2013 - 0 views

  •
"A group of African farmers are producing a commodity, but every season they struggle to access the needed inputs - improved seeds, quality fertilizers and crop protection products - at the right time, in the right quantity and quality, in reasonable proximity to their farms and for a reasonable price. They often do not have the needed cash or credit to pay for the inputs. After harvest, the farmers struggle to sell their goods. Often, they have no choice but to sell their produce at the local market for a low price. They are not organized and do not have the capacity either to negotiate for better prices, or to store their produce until prices increase. Even the basic options needed to add value are beyond their reach."

"The challenge, conducted in concert with Visualizing.org, was launched in September 2012 to solicit visualisations based on the OECD's data-rich Education at a Glance report. Entries from around the world focused on data related to the economic costs and return on investment in education - both for the individual and for society. Winners Krisztina Szucs and Mate Cziner from Hungary were chosen for successfully breaking down the complex interplay between costs and returns into a form that is easy to compare.[please see below]. Their entry takes a detailed look at public vs. private and men vs. women for selected countries, which can be changed. "

Donor Platform - Looking at territorial approaches in rural development - 0 views

  •
"Bonn, 27 Nov 2013. Rethinking rural development__ Opportunities for new partnerships and territorial approaches in a changing rural environment is the lead theme for the Platform annual general assembly in Paris on 22/23 January. Important challenges and new opportunities for development agendas bring about a need for a more inclusive approach to agricultural development. At the moment donors are not always equipped to address the inherent complexity. Could a modern territorial approach be the solution?"

Knowledge and innovation the key for sustainable Blue Growth - 0 views

  •
"(20/05/2014) This year's European Maritime Day Conference held over the 19 & 20 May in Bremen, saw industry experts and policy makers from across Europe come together to discuss how innovation and research in the maritime economy can drive a European growth and jobs recovery whilst securing a sustainable future for Europe's seas. The main conclusions drawn by participants included: There is a vast potential for jobs and sustainable growth in the maritime economy. To exploit it we need to invest more in knowledge and innovation and focus on placing sustainability at the heart of Blue Growth. The issues related to seas and oceans can only be addressed at international level - more global governance is of paramount importance. The EU's Maritime Spatial Planning and Maritime Security Strategy are good examples of what can be achieved. Next year's European Maritime Day will be held by Piraeus, Greece, in May 2015."

Visages de la pauvrete a Madagascar : evaluation de la pauvrete, du genre, et de l'ineg... - 0 views

  •
Madagascar has been entirely unsuccessful in reducing the number of its people that are poor, or extremely so, in the ten years since 2001, when poverty was already at a very high level. This well-known conclusion draws on the analysis of three successive rounds of the national household expenditure surveys (enquete periodiques aupres des menages, EPM) conducted by the Madagascar National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) in 2001, 2005, and 2010. The objective of the analysis in this report is to document the levels and changes in poverty in Madagascar, and provide a detailed review of correlates of poverty and inequality in various dimensions, including gender, age, the structure of households, and place of residence. The report is an assessment of past poverty trends, and while policy implications are highlighted in many cases, the report is focused mainly on the descriptive, rather than prescriptive. It is found that the poverty headcount did not decrease between 2001 and 2005, rising instead from 71 to 75 percent of the population, rather than the 68 percent estimated official headcount for 2005. The methodology is described at length in the report and its annexes.
