Drones Can Be Fun-and Educational | Edutopia - 1 views

  •
"Peering up, a teacher asked me, "What are we going to use it for?" as I flew our shiny new drone up between the umbrellas on the quad, past the roof of the gym, and into the low scattered clouds. The camera projected back to my iPhone, and I could see the newly planted trees in our quad, the only green for miles in the Mondrian concrete grid that is our local community. The students and teachers in the quad all looked up too, shielding their eyes to see the drone fly. Our custodians pulled up in their cart, and my assistant principal whooped like one of the middle schoolers on my campus. Get the best of Edutopia in your inbox each week. It's my job this year to answer questions like the one above. As a teacher on special assignment currently serving as curriculum coordinator for my school, I get to learn what's coming our way and devise methods of implementation. I specialize in technology and project-based learning, and I began thinking about implementing the drone immediately upon hearing that our district had purchased it. And I'm not the only one thinking about this issue. In the book Drones in Education, the International Society for Technology in Education touts the engagement factor but also sees academic potential in using drones. To guide schools to successfully implement the technology, the book promotes the SOAR model, which stands for Safety (ethics and legal use), Operation (flight and maintenance), Active learning (engagement in problem solving), and Research (practical applications)."

"While some people Netflix bindged during the pandemic, I choose another form of entertainment: Podcasts. Podcasts are great for multitaskers like me. Whether you're jogging, cleaning, driving, flying, doing yoga (don't judge me) or out walking your dog, a podcast provides a great way to keep the learning going while you're doing something else. Check out the playlist below to see what I'm listening to these days."

E-Books or "Real" Books? | Connect! - 0 views

  • For nonfiction, research activities, if given the choice, hands down I'll choose an online search for information, as opposed to searching through books. Is that an exclusive choice? Do I always recommend that to students? No, and no. But as a preference, an online search for information just makes sense, for a number of reasons. However, when it comes to fiction, students are "voting with their feet". Our students have had a number of projects this year in which fiction has been offered in digital format, and overwhelmingly, the library copies fly off the shelves within a week or so of everyone having access to the e-version.

What difference could one hour of learning make? « Quantum Progress - 2 views

  • “digital natives” I find that more often than not, they live in the internet shallows.
  • First, I don’t think we teach the skills of how to be a lifelong learner at all-how do you find a good book to read, a useful tutorial on fly fishing or an excellent explanation of the second law of thermodynamics?
  • What if there were an “Introduction to Life Long Learning Now” (ILLLN, for short) course that every 9th grade student takes

Virtual Skies - 8 views

The purpose of NASA's Virtual Skies (VS) website is to provide an engaging, yet informal, way to present aviation topics to students. The target audience is high school students, although academically advanced middle schoolers and college students have also found the site useful. In addition, after school programs, home schools, and civil aviation clubs have successfully used Virtual Skies as a supplement to their regular educational and enrichment programs.
