How we will use diigo and this group. - 39 views

diigo use required

    Hello everyone!

I have set this group up for us to use throughout the course as our shared references area.

Think of diigo and this group as our own course 'library' of references based not only on course content areas, and topics of interest within content areas, but also materials related to pedagogy in general, and even any of your own discipline-specific resources that you may want to bring into the course as reference. Also, any resources specifically dedicated to the knowledge and use of incorporating technology into any classroom would be of interest to us all i think.

Very specifically, you are required to bookmark, highlight, and comment on any links, references, and citations that you use in any course discussions, assignments, blog posts, etc.). This semester, in addition to bookmarking any references, my expectation is that we will make greater use of the highlighting, and commenting features in this tool.

By using diigo to document all the references that come up during the course we will have a fantastic easily accessible common annotated bibliography of resources that you will be able to keep, use, and continue to contribute to beyond the end of the term.

I have bookmarked several resources here for you and this course, and evaluated and tested the use of diigo with the students in this course last summer. So, you will note that their links remain in the group, and you will also see that they continue to be members of the group.

I would like your input on how we use diigo in this course. If you have any comments, or suggestions, please let me know.

Class Size - 0 views

  • Smaller class size seems to result in higher achievement among students who are economically disadvantaged. Students with lower academic ability seem to do better in smaller classes than in larger ones. It may be that class size affects student attitudes more significantly than it affects achievement. A direct effect of large class size is to lower the morale and increase the stress of teachers. There is typically little to be gained from reductions in class size that do not bring class size below 30.
  • Smaller classes are beneficial for children at the primary level, particularly in math and reading.
  • The most positive effects of small classes on pupil learning occur in grades K-3 in reading and mathematics.

  • Little, if any, increase in pupil achievement can be expected from reducing class size if teachers continue to use the same instructional methods and procedures in the smaller classes that they have used in larger classes (Robinson, p. 82).
  • Teachers with small classes must not only be trained to be effective in such settings, but they must also be committed to try new skills and procedures.
  • Robinson, Glen E. “Synthesis of Research on the Effects of Class Size.” EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP (April 1990): 80-90.
  • The most recent comprehensive review of existing research was completed by Robinson (1990), and used a cluster analysis approach. Studies were “clustered” into categories considered important for class size decisions such as grade levels, subject areas, student characteristics, student achievement, student behavior, and teaching practices. The results of part of Robinson’s analysis appear below.
  • Effective schools research has extended its research agenda by focusing on an expanded number of variables that are presumed to be related to student achievement. Schools are now perceived as a cultural entity where the complex interplay of multiple variables affect the lives of all who learn and teach in those institutions. As the metaphor for American schools has shifted from an assembly line to that of a caring, learning community, the class size research agenda has also shifted to include such variables as instructional method, teacher morale and stress, teacher work load, student behavior and attitudes, content areas, student characteristics, and grade level. Bennett (1987), in a review of more recent research, found broad agreement among researchers on the following general conclusions:

lifelong learning... - 1 views

  • I feel like every discussion, article and assignment I have done in this course has really made me question why I do things the way I do.

i am, of course, thrilled with this observation, aubrey. thanks for sharing it. If that was the only thing you got out of this cousre i would be very very happy. thanks for your willingness to consider the possibilities . : ) me
  • This was the most challenging course in my Master Degree career at UAlbany. I loved every minute of it. I think that pushing students to perform at higher levels helps them to break the plateu of what they think they are capable of. Usually they are capable of more than you think. It also helped my learning to use diigo and rate my posts. At first I thought it was painstaking and hard, especially when I spent an hour on constructing a post only to recieve a 2, but as I learned that it was more about teaching others, I began to perform better and was more motivated to teach something new and provide a cool resouce in diigo.
  • My feelings about this course are great! I would recommend anyone interested in online course development to take the course with Alex. She makes everyone in the course feel welcome and comfortable, which is the key to being successful and having students who are motivated to working with her

  • Relationships and feelings are one of the underlying keys to success in a course. If you have a teacher you like, don’t you want to work harder to please them? I know I do…and I know that I don’t really feel like working for someone who berates my feelings and is insensitive.
