    When education is teacher-centered, the classroom remains orderly. Students are quiet, and the teacher retains full control of the classroom and its activities. Because students learn on their own, they learn to be independent and make their own decisions. Because the teacher directs all classroom activities, they don't have to worry that students will miss an important topic.

    I found this article in the UAlbany library - if the link doesn't work, do a search for "In Defense of the Sage on the Stage" by Marianne Jennings. It's a fascinating article, a long read, but passionate in its insistence that we have gone too far in our efforts to make everything student-centered. Jennings makes the argument that there IS still room for the "brilliant lecturer."

    This longitudinal case study examined the amount of time needed to teach three asynchronous online courses at The University of Michigan-Dearborn. Self-monitoring was used to measure the amount of time required to complete the following activities: 1) reading and responding to emails, 2) reading, participating in, and grading 10 online discussions, and 3) grading 15 assignments. The findings indicate that the time needed to teach online courses falls within the range of reasonable expectations for teaching either live or online courses
