Effect of the Depression on Technology - O'Reilly Radar - 2 views

  • this recession will be good for innovation because recessions generally are
  • A recession means technologists cease to be paid vast amounts to duplicate the work of others
  • low-cost high-impact physical events we've created (Ignite, hacker meetups, coworking spaces, foo/bar camps) will thrive
  • ...20 more annotations...
  • agree that tough times foster innovation
  • @gregor's point about cultural activities increasing in Argentina during their 2001 recession sounds like an indicator in favour of open source
  • We are dealing with this as I will be graduating from college and entering the job market
  • I will be a hacker housewife and improve my skills while taking care of husband and home
  • innovation is a cultural effect within companies and cannot be turned on or off due to economic conditions
  • if the company has a traditional mindset
  • then innovation is going to be an uphill climb regardless of how many great ideas are floating around
  • a Fortune 500 company
  • clearly defined ROI
  • also those companies who attempt to clean up the mess government is going to make. The regulations that come out of the current crisis are going to be draconian
  • The additional costs of compliance will also affect new launches and IPOs due to the additional costs, so there is another negative drag on innovation, or at least the monetization of those innovations
  • a social network that harnesses its members to contribute to open source projects? Instead of playing facebook games or posting pics of yourself wasted at the latest party, get the members to commit to donating that extra time to a small piece of a large open source project

  • qualified peer review

  • Help others by online mentoring in resource-challenged places, etc.
  • We can afford to devote maybe 10-20% of our time to open source

  • 4. Diigo beta How helpful is it to bookmark a Web site if you need only one sentence from that 3,000-word article? Diigo is a free bookmarking service that lets you do what we wish Yahoo's Del.icio.us would: highlight text and comment on Web pages. Diigo caches each site so that you can search within text, not just the topic tags. And you won't have to leave the Del.icio.us community, since Diigo lets you save bookmarks simultaneously in both places.
  • 2. Wikipedia You might shun this online, open-source encyclopedia if you've ever been burned by prank entries or fudged facts. But because anyone can edit Wikipedia, it's a richer resource than Britannica for subjects off the beaten path, such as the > 1960s underground press > or > rivethead subculture > . Though it's not the only source you should reference in term papers, at least Wikipedia gets you started. >

My "my.yahoo.com" page always shows 2 blank floating-public-sticky notes of @(semicolon1 Schiff) and @(Leland Kriegh). I keep choosing "do not show me public sticky notes on this page" and it works only per time!? May someone advise any possible bug with my browser setting, or appropriate procedure to communicate this issue? Thanks.

Marking Up the Web with Diigo's Social-Annotation Tool | Edutopia - 0 views

  • Diigo definitely has a place in education. Envision a group of students working on a Web-based research project: Not only can they cite the pages they’ve used, they can also have conversations about resources on the very pages they are discussing. And to take it a step further, the students’ teacher can join the group, view how the students are using the Web resources, and comment on their note-taking -- right on the sticky notes. As the site states, “Diigo is about Social Annotation.”

Family Matters: Create a tagging schema - 1 views

  • Create a tagging schema taxonomy: (n) the study of the general principles of scientific classification If you've had anything to do with organizing information, you've heard this term.  In the web world, site managers spend weeks developing classification systems for their content so their search features will work properly.  Now for a new version - folksonomy.  Folksonomy is the same thing as taxonomy only without the education.  Folksonomy describes the grassroots classification systems developing as more and more "tag" platforms appear online.  While some  tags are appearing as standards, it's still quite a free-for-all out there.
  • I use Diigo to manage my bookmarks.  Anytime I find a page I want to save, I tell Diigo to bookmark it for me using the tags I assign that page.   Later - when I want a list of all the genealogy blogs I've bookmarked - I just click on my "genblog" tag on my Diigo page to view them. Because I have included surname tags on all the family photos I've uploaded to Flickr, I can send anyone requesting Barker information one link that displays all my Barker photo collection. The related articles section at the bottom of this post was created using Diigo to display all the links I've saved related to a specific topic (tag).
  • Because I use these systems daily, I've created my own tag system - a folksonomy - that I use across each of the different tagging applications/platforms I use.  For genealogy items I use the following tags: genealogy (for everything genealogy) genblog (any blog dealing with genealogy topics) genapp (genealogy software) gendex (a genealogy index - like Cindi's List) genpub (a genealogy publication) gendata (a genealogy data source) surnames for each family I'm researching location names - city, county and state - for areas I'm researching Every tagging site allows multiple tags.  I bookmark every article I write beginning with my site tag (familymatters for this blog) and then topic specific tags.  That [and Diigo's tools] is how I'm able to collect my earlier posts for a related articles list.  It's so flexible that I can create a list of only my articles or any articles I've bookmarked with a specific topic keyword. Tags are becoming an important component of your research toolbox so spend a few minutes developing a plan - a folksonomy - of keywords for your research.  Anyone who's interested in developing a standard for genealogy tags, please let me know in the comments.  My tags are very handy for my research, but "our" tags can help us all!

Recursion in Data Structure: How Does it Work - 0 views

  •
Recursive data structures are a powerful tool in computing, allowing data within a structure to be represented in terms of itself. Recursion is used for a variety of tasks, such as modelling complex hierarchical relationships or solving certain types of problems (e.g., searching or sorting algorithms). While recursion is an incredibly useful tool, there are some challenges that come with implementing the recursive data structure.
