search on keyword doesn't find bookmark - 85 views

search keyword tag bookmark bug

This is so basic that I'm afraid I may be missing something embarrasingly obvious and simple ...

I created this bookmark on Jan 15th:

    Title: Diigo Customize Search
    URL: http://www.diigo.com/customize_search

On http://www.diigo.com/user/marcelpaulo, I write on the search box:

    diigo

and that bookmark is not found within my bookmarks. I tried searching for other bookmarks: some are found and some aren't, I couldn't understand what made some searches work and others not.

Would somebody know what I'm doing wrong here ?

    Thanks

    Hi Graham !

Hey, thanks for the speed-lightning reply !

    > Are the searches that fail for you the ones that involve a search for a tag?

No. I wanted to search on bookmark title or URL, so I typed «diigo» in the box on the upper-right corner of the "My Bookmarks" page.

I read that diigo did a full-text search on bookmark title, URL and annotations. I always try to change the bookmark title to something I can search on later; I only use tags when the title alone is not significant enough to be searched on.

I saved the browser window before and after the search, it should show clearly what I tried to do, but I don't know if and how I could paste the jpg files here.

Once again, thanks for your speedy attention and interest !

    Hi Allan !

    > I believe you uncovered a nice little bug. I may be a cyber geek, but its so
    > much fun when I find a bug.

I accidentally "treaded" on it. Your job was harder and more creative: you
pierced a pin through it and gave it a name !

    > So after doing a little cyber sleuthing, I discovered that the bookmark in
    > question URL: http://www.diigo.com/customize_search shows up elsewhere in
    > the Diigo world. You must of stumbled upon this somewhere, liked what you saw
    > and saved it to your own bookmarks. I know this, because you are included in
    > the list of people who have saved the bookmark. The original title of the
    > bookmark was "Customize Search" and had some tags associated with it.

    That's exactly what I did !

    > You saved the bookmark and added the word "Diigo" to the front. Now you will
    > notice that your search keyword was Diigo, the word you added. I am betting
    > that if you perform the same search using a keyword found in the original,
    > i.e. "Customize" your mystery bookmark will show up.

It would make sense, yes, but the mystery persisted: neither "customize" nor
"search" can uncover the bookmark ! But this doesn't seem to make sense anymore.

    > I am guessing that bookmarks are inserted and accessed by their URL, with a
    > list of Diigo accounts that own such the bookmark. Diigo searches (since it
    > does a personal AND a Diigo community search) probably performs a shallow
    > search and does not log the variations of all of the saved bookmarks. In this
    > case, according to Diigo the Title is "Customize Search" NOT "Diigo Customize
    > Search".

I see your point. But I would have imagined and expected that the search would
be done ALSO on the URL. If this were the case, either "diigo", "customize" or
"search" would have found the bookmark.

    > This doesn't help you, but the Diigo developers should be aware. Makes me
    > wonder what happens if the very first person who created that bookmark,
    > decides to go and delete it from their personal bookmarks. Does Diigo lose
    > all associations to that URL thus lost forever or retain the original
    > information that was stored with it?

I'm also wondering: if the 1st person who bookmarked the page changed its
title, quite likely that would be the title used thereafter for searching.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to analyze this !

    Hi Scott,

(First of all, apologies for mixing up your name when I replied to your 1st
    post)

    > OK, got another beef with this search business and its related to the above
    > bug. If you create a bookmark, but are not the first person in the Diigo
    > community to do so, then when you perform a search, the bookmark will not

    > Bookmarks" hit list. I am more interested in mine first, as these are more
    > relevant and then everyone else's if I want to expand my search. This is a
    > fundamental break down in the search process and what people most want to
    > see.

Hadn't thought of that but you are right. It looks like you've uncovered quite
a few inconsistencies with the search mechanism. Do the Diigo developers
monitor this forum or should we open a bug report somewhere ?

Bookmarking and finding what you bookmarked is the least one can expect from a
service such as diigo or delicious. Unless one uses heavily diigo's
collaborative features, this is enough to justify reverting to delicious, which
I might actually do, even though their web interface is much worse than
    diigo's.

Once again, sincere thanks for taking the time on this !

    Hi Scott !

    > Oh dear, now lets not be rash :-) and jump back to Delicious. I may be just
    > speaking as an advocate here, but I think Diigo far exceeds Delicious, even
    > with the occasional bumps in the development path.

I can sense that "Diigo far exceeds Delicious", you're right, but then again:
if a Volkswagen Beetle serves my needs, why should I get a Ferrari ?

    > The developers do monitor this forum and I occasionally have their audience,
    > so I am sure this will get worked out.

Good to know this. Flicking through other threads, I could see they were
    overseeing the hustle-bustle down here.

    > I am backtracking a bit about my prior point. I wander if your original
    > search query of "Diigo" REALLY DID find your bookmark, but it was buried deep
    > in the "Everyone's Bookmarks" and was ommited from the "My Bookmarks"
    > listing. This would be the same problem I had with my second point. Since a
    > search of "Diigo" on the community website gives over 8000 hits, it would be
    > little wonder why you may not have seen it.
    >
    > What do you think?

It makes perfect sense to me if we stick to your sound reasoning. I flicked
through some 300 hits but didn't get to my bookmark. It should be buried deep
    as you said.

Let's see what the diigo people have to say about this !

Once again I send you my heartfelt thanks !

    Hi Graham !

    > http://www.diigo.com/search/fulltext?what=Minds%20on%20Fire *does* place the
    > required bookmark uppermost amongst the results from my bookmarks. My
    > bookmark (December 2008) was made months after other users' bookmarks.

This contradicts what we observed with my bookmark search. I'm puzzled. I must
be missing something. But it will be easy to dispell the doubt: to do it again:

    1. Spot a heavily bookmarked link
    2. Bookmark it, changing its title
    3. Search on any keyword from the changed title

    >> bookmark will not show up in the "My Bookmarks" hit list
    >
    > This symptom may present if the bookmark is recent, see nearby href="http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/9723" rel="nofollow"
    > target="_blank">http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/9723

I had read this thread. But I bookmarked that URL on Jan 15th, 3 days ago, a
longer time frame than the one in that thread.

    Thanks for your remarks !
