So I'm trying to follow some procedures that I found online and the highlighting tool has been invaluable! Thanks for that. But sometimes one kind of marker is not enough. It would be great having different kinds of markers like multiple-colored highlighting tools or custom markers (like asterisks or check-marks, etc) that could be placed in a fixed place on the web page (next to a word or an image).

    Thanks.

This occurs already. As your use of Diigo grows, you'll see different colours for e.g. private, group and public highlights.

    -1

Already, there is concern re: markers (yellow speech bubbles for floating sticky notes) that can be moved.

The introduction of markers that can not be moved will be problematic if, for example, the content of a page changes.

From HTML (to which Diigo annotations apply) we can not assume fixed layout/positioning of content.

    > custom

No objection to customisation :) but there's already a very wide range of features, and the group/public aspects to consider.

I see. But wouldn't that restriction apply to highlighted text also? I mean, using a transparent highlight effect with a marker attached the the highlight marker (which in turn would be attached to the text) would do the trick. And it would work with the same code--just a different appearance.

The problem with the yellow speech bubbles is that they move. In the past, I've added a speech bubble and when I go back to that website, the bubble is not in the same position.

    "private, group and public highlights"
How does that work? My highlights are private by default but I don't know how to make them public. And when I try to add them to a group, nothing happens.

Thanks for the improvements BTW. I use Diigo all the time. I love it!

Is that, a custom mark that appears only when the user moves the pointer arrow over a visible highlight?

Or a custom mark that appears always, in relation to an invisible highlight?

The problem with any permanent mark is the risk of it obscuring an important part of the site.

    Consider these higlighted pages:

    http://www.diigo.com/061m2
    http://www.diigo.com/061m0
    http://www.diigo.com/061m1
    http://www.diigo.com/061m3
    http://www.diigo.com/061m4

All were annotated when that blog had a very differrent appearance. Permanent marks intended to appear in what was then white space would now almost certainly obscure important parts of the blog.

Floating sticky notes must be movable.

Their initial position normally depends upon:

    a) the size of the browser window, and the point to which the author has scrolled, before the author sticks their note

    and

    b) the size of the browser window subsequently preferred by the viewer.

However, it seems that a considerately placed note may be moved, by someone other than the author, to an inconsiderate position. I'll cover this problem in a separate topic.

In any case: if a note relates to a page, without reference to some original text on that page, then it's more graceful to use a page comment.

    1. If you edit a bookmark and share to a group, the dialogue should offer to share your existing annotations. (Proceed with caution; if any other user has previously shared a comparable bookmark, your own data may lose (overwrite) the original data. This bug is detailed in a separate topic.)

    2. If you stick a note that is addressed to a group, the underlying highlight will necessarily be shared.

    3. If you stick a note that is public, the underlying highlight will necessarily be shared.

What's your operating system and version? Browser and version?

What's your version of Diigo Toolbar, or Diigolet?

    Great!
