    See for example

    http://help.diigo.com/@api/deki/files/68

    http://help.diigo.com/@api/deki/files/71

    in one context,
    http://help.diigo.com/How-To_Guide/Sticky_Notes#close

    and for example
    http://www.wildapricot.com/photos/newsblog_content/images/4470/original.aspx

Improvement suggestion: NEVER use 'X' as an icon for deletion.

(X is most often interpreted as meaning 'close window'.)

    Thanks
    Graham

Another example of just one 'X' that means delete in the midst of many other 'X' icons that mean close:

Thanks. We will change the delete icon to recycle bin icon.

    You are usability super man!

Another situation in which something clearer than the letter 'x' is desirable:

    http://www.diigo.com/ | Friends menu | Friends & Contacts | x

    - here, x does not mean close; it means remove

    - consider that not all browsers show tips.
