We Need to Rethink Online Safety [Larry Magid] - 1 views

  • The biggest risk is not so much the danger of being harmed but the danger of missed opportunities, especially at school. As we point out in, Online Safety 3.0: Protecting and Empowering Youth, schools too often block access to social media and fail to use it in the educational process. While it's true that there are some online activities that ought not to be done during school hours, banning all social media is the 21st century equivalent of banning all books just because some books are inappropriate for use in school.
  • I'm also concerned that Internet safety education is missing a big opportunity to reinforce digital citizenship, media literacy and critical thinking -- skills that will serve for life, on and off the net. We can certainly warn kids about the dangers du jour, but the ultimate solution to keeping kids safe is to instill an internal desire to treat themselves and others respectfully.

Digital Literacy: Skills for the 21st Century - 3 views

  •
Teachers wishing to foster digital literacy in their classrooms and states wishing to demonstrate it in their students face a common challenge: no comprehensive, established approach exists to guide the teaching, learning, and assessment of specific digital literacy skills. To begin addressing this challenge, we have developed this website, which was part of a two-year project funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies. The site articulates the skills comprising digital literacy with the goal of helping schools and districts implement a new approach to digital literacy teaching.

Web Warriors [Game] - 2 views

Kids create their own avatars and complete missions that educate them about cyberbullying, social media and mobile safety. Part of an Australian non-profit social initiative (Smart Online/SafeOnline) that uses kids to deliver campaigns aimed at educating their peers about cyberbullying/cybersafety issues. Registration is required and even though this is designed for use in Australia, anyone can play. A nice feature is that, as kids complete missions, they get an email summarizing what they have learned. This is the same agency that created the video, Pants Down

ChatRoulette: Devil Incarnate or Accessible Public? - 1 views

  • Don't get me wrong: There is a high probability that you will run into the seedier side of the site in a matter of moments.  Some have argued that ~10% of the site's users are exposing themselves or their genitals through the site.  And, unlike pornographic spam, these exhibitionists are typically male.

It's easy to see new Internet phenomena and panic, especially when the technology in question opens up a portal to all of the weird parts of the Internet. This is precisely what is happening around ChatRoulette, a new peer-to-peer webcam-based video chat site. Although the site was built by a 17-year-old Russian high school student to connect with other teens, nearly every adult who has visited the site runs screaming that this is a terrible space for young people. In some senses, they're right. But the more that they panic and talk about how bad this is for teens, the more teens get curious and want to check it out. The result? A phenomenon generated through fear.

Howard Gardner on Digital Youth [Video] - 6 views

Howard Gardner, the founder of multiple-intelligences theory discusses the challenges ethics and education face as digital media become more prevalent. Through his GOODPLAY PROJECT, he examines the ethical sense of young people. He ooks at five elements related to what it means to be ethical with new media: sense of identity, sense of privacy, sense of ownership/authorship, trustworthiness and credibility, and what it means to participate in a community.

Technology not only changes how we write, but it also changes what writing is. Education will need to re-evaluate which writing skills teachers should pass to their students. Digital graphic writing is one genre students need to be fluent. Comic Life is the "word processor" of digital graphic writing.

  •
If a stranger came up to you on the street, would you give him your name, Social Security number and e-mail address? Probably not. Yet people often dole out all kinds of personal information on the Internet that allows such identifying data to be deduced.

Privacy is Not Dead, Just Evolving - 2 views

It's a brave new world. Unfortunately--continuing the literary allusion--Big Brother is watching. As technology makes more information more accessible, it also threatens to expose information that is not intended to be shared. Privacy is a concept that is caught in the middle of the struggle.

Education, Social Media, and Ethics: Howard Gardner - 1 views

  •
Gardner tells us that what is unique about digital media and our era is that you can be as young as 7 or 8 and participate ... in some kind of a social network site or game and you are in touch potentially with thousands and thousands of other people. So the former lag between behaving morally toward people you know and behaving ethically toward people in the community who you don't know - that's been lost.
