According to a recent study from the Pew Internet & American Life project (Lenhardt & Madden,2005),more than one-half of all teens have created media content,and roughly one-third of teens who use the Internet have shared content they produced.In many cases,these teens are actively involved in what we are calling participatory cultures.A participatory culture is a culture with relatively low barriers to artistic expression and civic engagement, strong support for creating and sharing one's creations,and some type of informal mentorship whereby what is known by the most experienced is passed along to novices.

Blubbr is a neat quiz creation service that I recently learned about on Free Technology for Teachers. Using Blubbr you can create interactive quizzes that are based on YouTube clips. Your quizzes can be about anything of your choosing. The structure of the quizzes has a viewer watch a short clip then answer a multiple choice question about the clip. Viewers know right away if they chose the correct answer or not.  Great for reinforcing a topic on internet safety, social netiquette, social skills etc.

this would be an interesting activity for students to do in their own context.  If you're blogging with students or creating any kind of online digital content, have them create their own digital footprints and then analyse what they've created this past year.

As students across the country return to school, school districts face an often complicated and confusing legal landscape on how to deal with cyber bullies in their schools, according to Todd DeMitchell, EdD, a professor of education, who studies school liability, adequate supervision, and responses to preventing bullying and cyber bullying from school administrators and state legislatures.

An online bullying survey was completed by 216 students - 93.7 percent were freshmen- enrolled in the University Experience classes at Kansas State University. The goal of the survey was to determine if bullying behavior followed students from high school into college and how freshmen perceived bullying. The survey used the cyberbullying definition provided in Kansas' anti-bullying law, which took effect in January 2008 and was revised in July to include cyberbullying. The law requires schools to develop anti-bullying policies, plans and preventative measures. Cyberbullying is the use of any electronic communication device, such as e-mail, instant messaging, text messages, blogs, mobile phones, pages, online games or Web sites, to create an intimidating, threatening or abusive environment.

3. Analyze the ways that name-giving practices vary from one culture to another.

School resource officers from across Alabama and the nation fielded complaints about an Internet extortionist badgering girls for nude pictures. Victims even created a Facebook page warning females not to talk to the person with the user name Metascape.

AdweekMedia challenged agencies to create campaigns aimed at teens to reduce the incidence of cyberbullying. Six agencies participated and some of their work is presented here.

PBS Kids tackles the topic of bullying, including how to handle it, innocent by-standers and online bullying. It's My Life is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to create safe, engaging, and educational online media for kids aged 9 to 12. Content is available in English and Spanish.

Say It 2 My Face is a campaign against cyberbullying and a protest against anonymous websites that foster hate. The campaign was created by Taylor Audette, a University of Southern California college student.
