Twitter gets you fired in 140 characters or less - 0 views

  • Clay Shirky speaks of a day in the not-too-distant future when human resources departments will have the wisdom to look beyond social networking faux pas — at least in some small part because by then, everyone will have made at least one.
  • Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., tweeted this as-it-happens update regarding his group’s location and destination:"Moved into green zone by helicopter Iraqi flag now over palace. Headed to new US embassy Appears calmer less chaotic than previous here."
  • This social networking comedy of errors spread like dancing hamsters across Twitter. In the retelling, "theconnor" earned the nick, "Cisco Fatty." Before the work day ended, Web sleuths revealed "theconnor's" true identity. "Theconnor" was lampooned in a popular YouTube meme. And thanks to Google Cache, the deleted content of "theconnor’s" homepage resurfaced on CiscoFatty.com, a Web site erected to commemorate this cautionary tale.

Students need to understand that NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING Is private. Great case study about how 140 characters got someone fired before they were even hired.

Online, 'trust no one' - 2 views

  • The professor, Gloria Gadsden, thought she was only confiding sarcastically in her friends. But she told Inside Higher Ed she believed Facebook altered her settings so she had unknowingly allowed the "friends" of her online "friends" to read her postings.
  •
As far as high-tech misunderstandings go, this was a big one. An East Stroudsburg University sociology professor made two provocative posts on her Facebook page, according to the Web site Inside Higher Ed: "Does anyone know where to find a very discreet hitman? Yes, it's been that kind of day" and, "had a good day today, DIDN'T want to kill even one student :-) Now Friday was a different story."

Blog2Learn / Comment Starters for Students - 0 views

  •
One technique I used to push the learning connections and stretch students to higher levels of thinking is suggesting the use of comment starters to students. I encourage them to use these and encourage them to add to the list. These help students compose responses to posts at higher levels than just "I liked what you said" type of replies. It is a starting point.

Journeys In 2.0 Teaching: Using Voicethread in the Classroom Part 1 - 0 views

  • Our Global Issues Project is the culminating activity from my digital literacy unit in Language Arts 9. Students are challenged to look at their position in the world, their perceived power, and what they as teenagers can do to change things. The song Waiting on the World to Change by John Mayer is the jumping off point for this project. Students listen to the song, then blog about the meaning of the song. They then listen to the song and again respond in the blog about the meaning of the lyrics. Finally, they watch the music video several times and pick out all of the keywords, imagery, and allusions they can. This is done with a graphic organizer in Google Docs which they share with each other. I'll share another awesome use of Google Docs later this week!
  • There is a teachable moment here that you should incorporate. We talk about digital citizenship a lot in class, and the use of creative commons and copyright, so I have my students select photos that they have permission for, which they then have to include in a photo bibliography complete with links to the source of each photo.

How revealing is your digital footprint? - 1 views

  •
Although written to a corporate audience, there's much to be learned here on what information is/is not private on the internet. It would be a good class exercise for students to sleuth what information is known about their classmates and themselves.

"n 2006, I had the opportunity to conduct focus group interviews with students on the topic of cyberbullying. I partnered with Dr. Robin Kowalski and Dr. Susan Limber, psychologists at Clemson University who had already conducted a national survey on cyberbullying with students in grades 6 through 8. To build on that knowledge, we interviewed 148 middle and high school students in public schools. We selected schools in part for their diverse socioeconomic status.tudents in public schools.

What to do if your pictures are stolen on Flickr - - 2 views

  •
Like many photographers I enjoy people viewing my pictures, but I don't appreciate people using my images without permission, again by this I don't mean when someone uses my images and gives me proper credit and links back to this site, that is ok and encouraged. What I mean by "without permission" is when they pass it as their own or use it for profit without compensating me and asking for permission.

Sext-Ed | Rosalind Wiseman - 5 views

  •
Great parenting advice from Rosalind Wiseman on appropriate discipline for teens and tweens who have participated in sexting either as the perpetrator or someone who has helped spread the photos to others. Three different scenarios are addressed. Some advice may be applicable to school. The idea is for kids to own up and take responsibility - as perpetrators, bystanders, and targets - for unethical behavior.
