Worldchanging: Bright Green: Jane McGonigal on Gaming for Good - 0 views

  • two big distinctions. First, alternate reality games are not in a virtual environment. They’re built on top of social networks, so we use ordinary online tools like online video, blogs, wikis, and being part of a network. It’s not about graphics and avatars. Second, it’s real play and not role play. You don’t adopt a fictional personality. You play as yourself.

This feels like exactly what I hoped gaming could be in schools. And it makes the step from working with something like Youth Voices to Alternate Reality Gaming much easier to envision and integrate into core subjects.

Childhood obesity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

  • Obese children often suffer from teasing by their peers.[10][11] Some are harassed or discriminated against by their own family.
    • Ammy EWSIS

This is very important because children often becoming suicidal or low self esteemed due to teases made by their peers or own family.
  • Physical inactivity of children has also shown to be a serious cause, and children who fail to engage in regular physical activity are at greater risk of obesity.
    • Ammy EWSIS

It is very important for an overweight child to engage in physical activity as it can help improve their health and lose weight. The key to fighting obesity is to exercise daily and maintain a healthy eating habit.
  • A 2008 study has found that children who are obese have carotid arteries which have prematurely aged by as much as thirty years as well as abnormal levels of cholesterol[13].
    • Ammy EWSIS

Why is this so? How does carotid arteries and obesity both contribute to premature aging?
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • Children's food choices are also influenced by family meals. Researchers provided a household eating questionnaire to 18,177 children, ranging in ages 11–21, and discovered that four out of five parents let their children make their own food decisions.
    • Ammy EWSIS

A child's weight is highly influenced by their food choices and family meals. It plays a critical role on their diet.Hence if a parent lets their own child make their own food choices, then that wouldn't be good since kids enjoy eating junk food and fast food, which doesn't do any justice to their bodies. Instead, they should be eating healthy nutritious foods such as vegetables and fruits. It is important for the parent to be in charge of what their child consumes. I found out from another source that studies have shown that almost all childs who are overweight, are due to their parents giving them control over what they want to eat.
  • Breast-feeding for example may protect against obesity in later life with the duration of breast-feeding inversely associated with the risk of being overweight later on.
    • Ammy EWSIS

How does breast feeding contribute to preventing child obesity? Where are the facts to support this?
  • Stress can influence a child's eating habits.
    • Ammy EWSIS

I agree because sometimes when people are stressed, they tend to eat a lot, because eating usually makes them feel better and happier.
    • Ammy EWSIS

However, in some case, its different for other people. For example, females are very conscious about their own body appearance. They are very strict to themselves when it comes to having a nice body image. When influenced by a magazine model to look thin, they would binge and not eat; which later on leads to a serious case of anorexia.
  • Childhood obesity however can also lead to life-threatening conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep problems, cancer, and other disorders.[6][7] Some of the other disorders would include liver disease, early puberty or menarche, eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, skin infections, and asthma and other respiratory problems.
    • Ammy EWSIS

Yes this is very true. Child obesity can lead to any of these risky factors.
  • Many children fail to exercise because they are spending time doing stationary activities such as playing video games or watching TV. TV and other technology may be large factors of physically inactive children.

Every Experience Changes the Brain | Odeo: Search, Discover and Share Digital Media fro... - 0 views

  •
In this podcast, the author is actually advertising the Maharishi University of Management, but in the act he discusses consciousness and its importance in education. I found it especially interesting because it takes the perspective of a biological consciousness. It describes experience as "traces in the brain" and the distinctive "connection of neurons." In addition to this he brought up the point that the brain is constantly changing; "Over 70 percent of the brain changes everyday." However, this make me wonders where is the evidence to back up this assertion. Although somewhat unconvincing for me, this podcast raises a very important point: is consciousness physical? I hope I could answer this question but it is plausible that such a question would remain unanswered for a long time. Neuroscience and the biological perspectives on cognition are still young, but I am certainly that progress will come at any time.

  • We had one nurse at our hotel, so he was out front helping people who were coming in who were injured. When word got out that there was a nurse at our hotel, people just started bringing their injured family members to the hotel. I was deputized by the nurse to help in whatever way I could. So he would tell me where a broken bone was, and I had to learn on the sly how to make a splint.

  • The injuries just kept coming all day long—head injuries, people with multiple broken legs, people catatonic who couldn’t speak. Everybody is asking for medicine. You know, we don’t have basic—we don’t have Advil.
  • It’s hard to describe. I was working on a boy who his father was there speaking in Creole, so we were trying to get a good translation, but basically what he explained was that their house collapsed, and he got out, but his son was trapped under the rubble. But he could—his son could still yell, and they spent all night trying to find him, and finally they dug him out, and they brought him to our hotel, because there was one nurse at our hotel.

After watching the video, I was utterly speechless. It's really sad to know that another country is in desperate help of need, especially when they weren't in a good state before.Having a massive earthquake hit a city that;s already in poverty is really devastating. The situation is almost similar to that of the tsunami that happened just a few years ago. Other countries are contributing by sending over aid and people to help revive the city and help the people. Most of the buildings have collapsed and many of the few buildings had cracks. It's very interesting to hear about different people who were visiting Haiti speak about their experience during the disaster. Over thousands of people in Haiti are currently homeless and injured. A person walking by would be able to witness bodies being crushed by concrete and bodies covered by a sheet of blanket laying on the floor. The country is now short in water supply, food, money, and many important factors. People are desperate for aid and money. I think it's great that other countries aren't just standing by and not doing anything. I hope in the future, they will be able to revive most of the damaged buildings and maybe the people there will find jobs and homes again.

Adora Svitak: What adults can learn from kids | Video on TED.com - 0 views

  • nt occurrence. Every time we make irrationa
  • Now, I want to start with a question: When was the last time you were called childish? For kids like me, being called childish can be a frequent occurrence. Every time we make irrational demands, exhibit irresponsible behavior, or display any other signs of being normal American citizens, we are called childish, which really bothers me. After all, take a look at these events: Imperialism and colonization, world wars, Georg
  • has a program called Kids Design Glass, and kids draw their own ideas for glass art. Now, the resident artist said they got some of their best ideas through the program because kids don't think about the limitations of how hard it can be to blow glass into certain shapes. They just think of good ideas. Now, when you think of glass, you might think of colorful Chihuly designs or maybe Italian vases, but kids challenge glass artists to go beyond that into the realm of broken-hearted snakes and bacon boys, who you can see has meat vision. (Laughter)
    • Andrea. C

I second this quote because I think it's simply true. A child's imagination has no boundried. Unlike an adult, all they know is how to act "childish" and I think it's a great source if you use it.
  •
the part that stood out for me the most is when she said "children are better than adults, because children just imagine all they want, while adults put limitations on the real world." In my point of view, this is just plain bull crap. True, older people put limitation on what they think, but that's because they know better. We all know that mass-producing transformer is nothing but a child's creative imagination, and does it make children better than adults by thinking that? I don't think so.

Kids do need to be heard more by adults. Some times children have better ideas and solutions then some adults. When kids go to there parents to help them with there math homework. Most of the time they don't understand and have to pay for a tooter. If this is the case dose this mean children are able to comprehend situations better than adults. By being able to salve and understand problems faster and easier.
  •
Well we listened to Adora Svitak who says adults should learn from kids as much as kids learn from adults. I have to say that's very true. My experience with adults is that they always say that they are right, always doing stuff for our own good...I don't think that's really true. My parents always say what I'm allowed to or not to do. It's not like in ever irrational event happens, I want to do. No, that's really not it. I obviously have weighted the consequences and chose not to do something or to do something. This classroom for an example is definitely of the lack of trust and that adults should listen to kids once in a while. A lot of us in this tell our teacher that we think whats up have no real.....effect on our education. It's not like we're lazy (sometimes we are, but not this), but we just don't get the purpose of it. I think that this is a great clip for adults to watch. I do wonder though, how many of the adults there actually took that session to heart. I wonder how many of them turned and just commented that was adorable or something? I get that sometimes when I tried to make a valid point...
  •
I feel what this girl Adora Svitak was saying was true because parents do look at kids as childish and underestimate their abilities. I think it should go both ways, parents trust children and children trust parents.
