I'm currently learning more about eating disorders, a very popular topic about teens. I am listening to a podcast that talks about girls blogging on the internet and joining forums chatting with other people who are also trying to become thin. Just listening to the podcast makes me really wonder whats wrong with the girls and why they are torturing their bodies like that. The podcast read a girls blog that said, " i forgot to delete the history on my internet and my mom had saw what i had been on. Anaboot camp anorexic queen etc. Now shes watching me like a hawk. Im only on now because shes at the pub. It was my 100 calorie diet and i did fine until dinner. She shoved a white roll down my throat and a bunch of chicken . probably like 300 calories. Ugh, I can feel myself getting fatter. I need tips to get her off my back." It's crazy how girls take their physical image so seriously.I would understand, because I'm a girl also, but I would never starve myself like that ! I would skip dinner, but I would Never survive off drinking tea the whole day. That's just really harmful to your body. The podcasts talks about ways they can help these girls recover from anorexic by promoting pro-recovery sites. However, not all of the users who went on those blog, were females. There were also males. What i found most shocking was that there was even a 54 year old who blogged about their diet... The blogs are very interesting because the people talk about what they are going their and express their feelings for people on the internet to see. The most helpful way to prevent younger kids to going on these pro-anorexia sites, is to talk to them about it and teach them about the consequences...

How to use the nature power - 0 views

  •
The universe is full of power, earth is a tiny piece of the whole universe. Human already knew how to use the nature power and that power makes our life much better. If we can use universe power, our life must be cooler. The earth is rotating the sun and the sun is rotating too. If we use the power of rotating, we can save a lot of energy. And if we understand of the universe, we can stop a lot of farm to happen. The space has huge power and the power is harmful, a single planet can be destroyed by the power. If we can use the power and know things earlier, then there will be less problems, and human life will be longer. People are trying to use solar energy now, where sun lights create power and it's a good way to save energy. "There has been a dramatic decrease in cost and prices over the past 12 months, which puts utilities in a strong position to bargain," says Chris O'Brien, head of market development for Oerlikon Solar. The Swiss company launched its solar group in 2007, offering end to end manufacturing lines for thin film PV. O'Brien says first-generation thin film customers in Europe have a manufacturing cost of approximately $1.50/W for a thin film PV module. His company's goal is to drive costs to around $0.70/W by the end of next year. With the current cost structure, including federal incentives, a 10 MW PV plant in California can have a delivered cost of electricity of around $0.15/kW. O'Brien says he expects that to fall below $0.10/kW by 2012. I really like this quote, because it told us how much money that the solar energy is saving for us. And it also told us, if we use the nature power, we can do a lot to keep our earth healthier.

Global Warming - 0 views

I'm learning more about global warming right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: How to stop global warming? I was researching this question online, and this blog post caught my attention because this blog post tells you what you need to know about global warming to know how to prevent it from continuing. This post tells you what global warming is and the causes of global warming. This post is helpful and informational. "Most modern attention to the problem of global warming began with discussion of depletion of the Earth's Ozone layer. Ozone (O3) is a molecular form of Oxygen. The Ozone layer is a relatively thin strata of these molecules set in the lower portion of the Earth's stratosphere. Depletion of the Earth's Ozone layer has resulted in a large increase in Ultra Violet Radiation reaching the surface of the earth. Does this increase in UV rays equate to global warming? Not really. In fact most scientific opinion is that depletion of the Ozone layer results in cooling of both the stratosphere and troposphere. So why mention depletion of the Ozone layer as regards to global warming? Because it represents a needed balance between harmful radiation being allowed to reach the earth's surface and our desire to stem the rapid increase in our air and water temperature. Remember, we are viewing global warming as a chain of events." The quote I chose here is basically saying that people think the reduction of the Earth's Ozone layer is one cause of global warming. Ozone is a molecular form of Oxygen. The reduction of the Earth's Ozone layer resulted in an increase in Ultra Violet Radiation appearing on earth. I think global warming is a very important issue because global warming happens on earth and thats where we live. Global warming is not a positive issue but a negative one so I think we all should work together to find a solution to this problem if we want to save the place where we live on.

Childhood obesity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

  • Obese children often suffer from teasing by their peers.[10][11] Some are harassed or discriminated against by their own family.

This is very important because children often becoming suicidal or low self esteemed due to teases made by their peers or own family.
  • Physical inactivity of children has also shown to be a serious cause, and children who fail to engage in regular physical activity are at greater risk of obesity.
    • Ammy EWSIS

It is very important for an overweight child to engage in physical activity as it can help improve their health and lose weight. The key to fighting obesity is to exercise daily and maintain a healthy eating habit.
  • A 2008 study has found that children who are obese have carotid arteries which have prematurely aged by as much as thirty years as well as abnormal levels of cholesterol[13].
    • Ammy EWSIS

Why is this so? How does carotid arteries and obesity both contribute to premature aging?

  • Children's food choices are also influenced by family meals. Researchers provided a household eating questionnaire to 18,177 children, ranging in ages 11–21, and discovered that four out of five parents let their children make their own food decisions.

A child's weight is highly influenced by their food choices and family meals. It plays a critical role on their diet.Hence if a parent lets their own child make their own food choices, then that wouldn't be good since kids enjoy eating junk food and fast food, which doesn't do any justice to their bodies. Instead, they should be eating healthy nutritious foods such as vegetables and fruits. It is important for the parent to be in charge of what their child consumes. I found out from another source that studies have shown that almost all childs who are overweight, are due to their parents giving them control over what they want to eat.
  • Breast-feeding for example may protect against obesity in later life with the duration of breast-feeding inversely associated with the risk of being overweight later on.
    • Ammy EWSIS

How does breast feeding contribute to preventing child obesity? Where are the facts to support this?
  • Stress can influence a child's eating habits.
    • Ammy EWSIS

I agree because sometimes when people are stressed, they tend to eat a lot, because eating usually makes them feel better and happier.
    • Ammy EWSIS

However, in some case, its different for other people. For example, females are very conscious about their own body appearance. They are very strict to themselves when it comes to having a nice body image. When influenced by a magazine model to look thin, they would binge and not eat; which later on leads to a serious case of anorexia.
  • Childhood obesity however can also lead to life-threatening conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep problems, cancer, and other disorders.[6][7] Some of the other disorders would include liver disease, early puberty or menarche, eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, skin infections, and asthma and other respiratory problems.
    • Ammy EWSIS

Yes this is very true. Child obesity can lead to any of these risky factors.
  • Many children fail to exercise because they are spending time doing stationary activities such as playing video games or watching TV. TV and other technology may be large factors of physically inactive children.

Climate | Farming First - 0 views

  • Members of the Farming First coalition believe that: Agriculture generally, and farmers especially, are vital to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Increasing farm productivity in a sustainable way and decreasing waste and losses can significantly mitigate the effects of climate change, prevent deforestation, and protect biodiversity. Adopting proven sustainable agricultural practices reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and enhances the effect of natural carbon sinks. Further research and innovation are essential to invent the necessary adaptation and mitigation solutions. Therefore, farmers must be involved in implementing climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. To support them, we must create sound and reliable incentives; we must share knowledge; and we must make adequate tools and technologies accessible to deliver both food and energy security. As key stakeholders in agriculture, the world’s farmers, agronomists, scientists, engineers and industries are working together through an open coalition, to provide innovative solutions which reduce emissions from agriculture and adapt to climate change while increasing agricultural productivity to meet growing food needs.

its good that we are haveing more knowledge to get world hungary over with because i though that they are really bad when they have alot of food shortage speically in the desert parts there is like no way that they can grow food but with our powers now i think that we can actually grow food at places liek that which can help them which is great. i though that it's great in many ways because with this i thin k that they can help them solve thier thing

I'm learning more about food security right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is how to reduce the chance of food insecurity and get a better way to produce more food. I was researching this question online, and this blog post, "Climate/Farming First" caught my attention because it answered my question and listed a lot of useful sources of ways. The quote I chose here is basically saying that the change of the climate affects the amount and quality of agricultural production directly. For example, greenhouse gas emission would affect the quality of the production or even reduce the amount of it. As a result, professors in various fields from all over the world tried to do research and explore ways to solve this problem. I think this is very amazing because I didn't know that the surroundings would also affect the agriculture production, which might lead to great food insecurity. It makes me wonder whether the experts have thought of good ways to solve the issue. I'm also wondering if I would also be able to contribute to their research in the future.
