Since the early 1990s, institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have required state-owned hospitals and clinics in Third World countries to be privatized before loans are considered. Many times those formerly state-owned and -run hospitals were purchased by U.S. and European insurance companies that then introduced U.S. models of managed care, even though the history of healthcare in those countries was vastly different from the systems that had developed in the United States.

Industrialised nations are responsible for the bulk of greenhouse gas emissions - both today and historically. Another name for the South Island was Te wai Pounamu (the water greenstone), since much greenstone (jade, or pounamu) was found in the rivers there. Stewart Island, south of the South Island, was known as Te punga a Maui (the anchor of Maui). It was the anchor that held the canoe as Maui hauled in the giant fish.

Today, five years later, water is again as cheap as ever, and a group of community leaders runs the water utility, Semapa. But half of Cochabamba's 600,000 people remain without water, and those who do have service have it only intermittently - for some, as little as two hours a day, for the fortunate, no more than 14.

Nuclear power remains dangerous, polluting, expensive and non-renewable. More nuclear power means more nuclear weapons proliferation, more nuclear-armed states, more potential "dirty bombs" and more targets for terrorists. It also means less resources invested in real solutions to growing energy demands.
