This means there is no financial incentive to maintain the house; the next dollar invested will not be recouped upon resale. Add the fact that the houses were built with cheap materials and methods to begin with, and you see why many fringe suburbs are turning into slums, with abandoned housing and rising crime.

  • First, the accumulation of research has established a developmental framework for historical knowledge.  Development moves broadly from a naïve, unquestioning acceptance of the authority of historical texts and a judgment of the past by contemporary values and beliefs to a sophisticated recognition that the past is irretrievable and different (even strange), all accounts are human constructions, subject to challenge, and all sources are problematic. 
  • Second, sophisticated historical thinking can be broken into discrete cognitive “moves”  (2), which Reisman has condensed into sourcing, close reading, contextualization, and corroboration.
  • These skills seem effective for teaching at the secondary level, especially for the struggling readers in the study, but of course historians use more; for example, making connections, empathy, marshaling evidence, recognizing limits to one’s knowledge, and recognition of different perspectives.

  • Unlike a traditional history class, in which students are asked to master a single narrative, usually established by a textbook, Reisman’s lessons asked students to “interrogate, and then reconcile, the historical accounts in multiple texts in order to arrive at their own conclusions.” 
  • Reisman also evaluated student arguments on a scale beginning at the lowest level of analysis—judgment of historical actors by modern standards with no evidence—to judgments with minimal evidence and no regard for context, to judgments containing an awareness of context and perspective though limited in awareness of complexity, to, finally, awareness of one’s own historical subjectivity that encouraged resistance to hasty judgments.  This highest level demonstrated metacognition; these students had developed an awareness of their own thinking.

This seems to be a moment of fervent protest movements that are ultimately vague and ineffectual.

  • The paradox of reform movements is that, if you want to defy authority, you probably shouldn’t think entirely for yourself. You should attach yourself to a counter-tradition and school of thought that has been developed over the centuries and that seems true.
  • The old leftists had dialectical materialism and the Marxist view of history. Libertarians have Hayek and von Mises. Various spiritual movements have drawn from Transcendentalism, Stoicism, Gnosticism, Thomism, Augustine, Tolstoy, or the Catholic social teaching that inspired Dorothy Day.

  • t's seems the height of arrogance for any paleoanthropologist to assume that the bones they have in hand represent all knowledge. That what is certainly the vast majority of still-existing bones and materials still hidden in earth doesn't represent anything they they don't already know from the relative scraps they have found.
  • On the other hand, the geneticists don't have "evidence", they have hints or suggestions. Sure, they can see existing genes in a modern DNA sampling that have similarities to genes from an older sampling dug from the earth, but how those genes came to be in the modern specimen is completely assumptive guesswork. The geneticists are looking at two end points and are 1. assuming they are of the same linear history and then 2. are assuming all the points in between. Rather grand assumptions.

  • The real problem is in how information is obtained. Anthropologists study bones and are forced to draw conclusions based on ancient, fragmentary evidence, and geneticists can obtain complete DNA samples, but not of very ancient organisms. Both are forced to make assumptions based on different sources of evidence. With regard to the accepted tree of life (much as a bridge lacking most of the cables or roadway) it's very much a work in progress!

    Thought that this article was very interesting because it talked about many issues dealing with the historical debate in Russia between the Slavophiles and Westernizers. I thought the most important part that this article discussed was their differing ideas about religion and orthodoxy. The author says, "The two groups disagreed on attitudes toward religion. Granovsky and Korsh advocated the immortality of the soul, while the democrats and Botkin preached atheism and materialism." This idea about religion is very interesting and caught my attention. Many people feel like it didnt have much of an impact, but religion was one of the biggest topic of Discussion in Russian history.
