5 Reasons Why Coffee is Good for Your Health - 0 views

  •
Over two billion people drink coffee everyday, yet many still believe that coffee is bad for the health. Coffee has a lot of caffeine and it has been blamed for many disorders from sleeplessness to nervousness to headaches. There are many myths about coffee and caffeine and all its evils. The most ridiculous one I heard was that it would stunt my growth if I drink too much coffee. I am only 4'11″ so my parents blamed it on all the coffee I drank when I was a child. Of course, they have not thought of the fact that no one in the family is towering over 5'3″.

Why babies need more tummy time than they're getting. - By Brian Mossop - Slate Magazine - 0 views

  •
In the early 1940s, Dr. Harold Abramson, a New York pediatrician, pored over heartrending reports of babies who accidentally suffocated while they slept. As he reviewed case after case, he noticed that a vast majority of the deaths occurred when babies slept on their stomachs. In a commentary in the Journal of Pediatrics, Abramson suggested that the many case reports of infant suffocation hinted that a newborn's sleeping position might contribute to so-called "crib death," later called SIDS. In the following decades, other researchers noticed that SIDS was less common in countries where infants typically slept on their backs. Fifty years after Abramson's study, the American Academy of Pediatrics formally launched a "Back to Sleep" campaign, instructing parents to put babies to sleep on their backs during their first year. The campaign has been hugely successful: Since it started in 1992, the SIDS rate in the United States has been cut in half.

Did your grandmother force you to gargle with hot saltwater whenever you were afflicted with a bad cough? Did your father whip up a concoction of water, mint leaves and cinnamon bark when you complained of an upset stomach? We all have stories of home remedies we were compelled to ingest by well-meaning parents and relatives. But is there any merit to such remedies?

Secondhand television exposure linked to eating disorders - 0 views

  •
ScienceDaily (Jan. 6, 2011) - For parents wanting to reduce the negative influence of TV on their children, the first step is normally to switch off the television set. But a new study suggests that might not be enough. It turns out indirect media exposure, i.e., having friends who watch a lot of TV, might be even more damaging to a teenager's body image.

The less obvious ones could range from a bad home situation like divorce or parents who have no time for their kids.

Social networking's good and bad impacts on kids | KurzweilAI - 0 views

  •
Social media present risks and benefits to children but parents who try to secretly monitor their kids' activities online are wasting their time, says Larry D. Rosen, Ph.D., professor of psychology at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Rosen identifies potential adverse effects of social media, including: Teens who use Facebook more often show more narcissistic tendencies, while young adults who have a strong Facebook presence show more signs of other psychological disorders, including antisocial behaviors, mania, and aggressive tendencies. Daily overuse of media and technology has a negative effect on the health of all children, especially preteens and teenagers, by making them more prone to anxiety, depression, and other psychological disorders, and making them more susceptible to future health problems. Facebook can be distracting and can negatively impact learning. Studies found that middle school, high school and college students who checked Facebook at least once during a 15-minute study period achieved lower grades. Rosen says new research has also found positive influences linked to social networking, including: Young adults who spend more time on Facebook are better at showing "virtual empathy" to their online friends. Online social networking can help introverted adolescents learn how to socialize. Social networking can provide tools for teaching in compelling ways that engage young students. "If you feel that you have to use some sort of computer program to surreptitiously monitor your child's social networking, you are wasting your time. Your child will find a workaround in a matter of minutes," he says. "You have to start talking about appropriate technology use early and often and build trust, so that when there is a problem, whether it is being bullied or seeing a disturbing image, your child will talk to you about it." Cerebral palsy occurs when parts of the brain that control muscles are damaged, causing varying degrees of lifelong disability. There is a wide spectrum disability within CP, ranging from mild physical disabilities to more severe cognitive and physical disabilities both. Types of Cerebral Palsy: Spastic CP Ataxic CP Mixed CP Monoplegic CP Spastic Cerebral Palsy: This is the most common type of CP. Spastic is a condition of muscular rigidity or spasm that children with CP have. Muscle stiffness causes the body to adopt abnormal positions that the child cannot easily move out from. Movements are awkward and limited or restricted. Ataxic Cerebral Palsy: Ataxic means unsteady or shaky movements that are less pronounced than in athetosis. These unsteady movements are observed when a child tries to carry out an activity. For example, when he/she reaches for an object or a toy, he/she may miss the target in the first attempt. Due to poor balance, standing and walking may take longer to learn. Mixed Cerebral Palsy: Children with mixed CP show features of more than one type of cerebral palsy. For example, some children have spastic CP with athetosis. Monoplegic: Occasionally a child has monoplegic CP, in which only one limb is affected. Monoplegic cases are few. CP Child Chair CP is usually caused by factors prior to birth: lack of oxygen passed to the child before birth, via infection spreading from mother to baby or by genetic disorder.
