Macular degenerative disease, or age related macular degeneration, may be the most frustrating eye disorder there is and, like many other eye disorders, is at first a very dangerous process because it goes unnoticed. The degree of macular degenerative disease is worse in some individuals than others, but every older person has it to some degree.

Alpha Carotene is a Provitamin A and one of the fifty carotenoids able to be converted in the body into retinol or Vitamin A. It is also known as α-carotene- a form of carotene with a β-ring at one end and an ε-ring at the other. It's a very potent antioxidants and recent research has shown that this perhaps more potent antioxidant than Beta Carotene. Alpha Carotene is very beneficial for those who are in the habit of smoking and alcohol consumption. Also, people with low intake of fruits and vegetables need more Alpha Carotene.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are two carotenoids of the xanthophyll family of carotenoids. Xanthophyll is a yellow carotenoid pigments found in plants, animal fats and in egg yolks. Lutein and Zeaxanthin both carotenoids have yellow pigments and can be found in yellow color foods and in other colored foods as well. Lutein can be found in dark green vegetables such as spinach, collard greens, kale etc and Zeaxanthin can be found in corn, orange peppers, oranges, and tangerines etc.

With the recently issued mosquito-borne illness advisory, Community Eye Center (CEC) seeks to inform about eye manifestations of the West Nile Virus. Late last week, health the Florida Department of Health Charlotte County issued a mosquito-borne illness advisory. The advisory arose after a recently confirmed human case of West Nile Virus. Often, patients will present no symptoms of the West Nile Virus. But, in about 20% of cases, those infected may develop a fever and other symptoms including headaches, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash. In rare cases, West Nile can develop into a potentially life-threatening disease that affects the central nervous system.
