12 Tips for training older teachers to use technology - Resources for English Language Learners and Teachers | Pearson English - 1 views

  •
There is an assumption that persists in the educational community that more mature teachers are much more difficult and reluctant to be trained on the effective use of educational technology. To some degree, I think this assumption has been built on by the digital native vs digital immigrant myth. But as someone who has trained teachers of all ages all over the world I would say that, from my own experience, this hasn't been the case.

Wizer is a fantastic free tool for creating simple digital worksheets that enable learners and teachers to do some pretty complex things. When I first discovered the tool a few months back I was really impressed by how easy it was to create really engaging blended learning content for class or homework, so it's great to be able to publish this Q & A with Nira Mayorchik Sheleg the Co-founder & CEO.

Introducing iLearn4Free: educational apps for little learners - 8 views

  •
English is a foreign language for 95% of the world's children. Yet almost all digital literacy tools for young children are written in English. Mobile learning is therefore out of reach for all but those very few children prepared to start learning a foreign language before they have mastered their own. Isabelle Duston, a self-professed "serial entrepreneur" decided to tackle the problem by creating educational applications that will bridge the digital language divide without losing cultural diversity in the learning process. Her iLearn4Free venture is developing apps in several languages for teaching little ones how to read in their native language.

This is an excellent idea for a district to implement. Teaching teaches how to curate content online to align it with state standards. Does it take time? Yes. But, instead of playing outside consultants and companies to do this, a special committee of well trained and motivated teachers can come together and do this. They can pay them extra for this position. I think this will even motivate more teachers to get digitally ready when they see their colleagues getting payed extra for this kind of stuff.
  • created an in-house wiki to manage its growing assortment of digital curricula and lessons.
  • dividing material into grade and subject areas, it helps educators unpack state standards and places them into bite-size expectations for what teachers should teach.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Rather than relying on individual educators to sift through endless material, many districts and states are helping to curate and catalog such resources, serving as the librarians of the digital age.
  • "This is curated by teachers, not by someone on the 70th floor of a New York City high-rise. It's simple, but powerful: Teachers tend to trust other teachers."
  • The goal is to provide materials that meld with a teacher's normal workflow-and not to become yet another website to visit. "We're trying to curate good content, letting them know it's been reviewed and meets our standards, while also being mindful that there are a lot of resources out there,"

Every Teacher's Must-Have Guide To Facebook - 13 views

  •
You can't swing a stick in social media without hitting something on Facebook. Same goes for education. You can't talk about how technology is revolutionizing education without mentioning Facebook. It's a simple service to figure out but what about once you become a regular user? If you're a teacher, you would be well served by spending 3 minutes to read through this must-have guide. (We timed it out and it's a bit under 3 minutes. It's almost summertime, you can spare it for us!)
