Podcast245: Technology Shopping Cart Podcast05 - Digital Citizenship and an I... - 0 views

  • Welcome to episode five of the Technology Shopping Cart podcast where educational innovation thrives on the food of creative ideas! This week Karen Montgomery, Vicki Allen and Wesley Fryer host an interview with Kristine Molnar of PBwiki. PBwiki is one of our favorite web 2.0 sites for creating collaborative wiki documents with teachers and students. After sharing our geeks of the week, we discussed digital citizenship and the ways teachers in different places are helping students as well as educators connect 21st century skills with digital citizenship skills including Internet safety, safe online collaboration, and netiquette. It is helpful to situate conversations about Internet safety within a broader discussion of digital citizenship, and insure the constructive and positive uses of collaborative digital technologies are also highlighted.

Using Technology Vs Technology Integration- An Excellent Chart for Teachers ~ Education... - 1 views

  • When we talk about technology integration in the classroom we are talking about a planned and highly structured and purposeful use of technology with students whose ultimate goal is to engage students and help them develop new thinking skills. Using technology, on the other hand, is a random and sporadic process whose main goal is to instruct students on content not to engage them with content.

I like all of the definitions in this blog post. They sound connected to past research, yet new. I know I was feeling odd at the "Digital Is..." Conference, because I don't want to let the technology disappear into uses. It's better, I think to look for what we can get out of particular technologies. That's what we are doing now with Google's Wave. "Alongside these discussions Frances Bell suggested the term Co-Digital as a better term to describe the process of "…seizing the opportunities presented by the newness of technologies to spot changes and then shape the development of the technology."" As this paragraph suggests, we still need to look at "digital technologies" to see how we can exploit them for what we need.

Screencasts and Education by Paul McGovern | The Screening Room - 0 views

  • I believe the concept of learning is changing.  Learning has become a non-static entity and educators need to adapt and make use of the technological frameworks that exist to support 21st Century learning.
  • I believe we as teachers owe it to our students to embrace educational technology to deliver the best learning experience possible to our students.

  • Firstly the clarity of teaching is evident; students can be shown exactly how to perform a given task or be educated on a given subject matter. Moreover, the easy access to repetition of this teaching through repeated plays of the content can help establish understanding.

This analogy of equipping sailing vessels with steam engines works well as an illustration of technology being plugged into traditional classrooms.
  • We need to get the teacher into the game. The teacher needs to get in there and be part of the learning process, actively engaged in solving the problem with the students and learning with the students—not teaching but modeling learning with the students by functioning as an expert learner solving problems and constructing new knowledge with the students.
  • modeling the learning process

  • Any organization that adopts a new technology without significant organizational change is doomed to failure. You have to change the organization. You cannot just add the technology. You have to actively work on changing the roles of the teachers, the roles of the students, the roles of the parents, and the roles of the administrators, and start to work toward building new relationships and new structures
  • we will get the same result if we introduce modern learning technologies in our schools but do not prepare teachers to work in this new learning environment.   If we want to take advantage of these new technologies and the billions we are investing in equipment for our schools, we have to prepare teachers very differently than we have in the past. We have to change our own model of teaching and instruction in higher education.
  • Trying to introduce new technologies into schools without these changes would be similar to efforts in the sailing industry during the 1800s, when steam engines were installed in wooden sailing ships.
  • We will not get out of our wooden ship schools until we use communication technologies for two-way interactivity that allows us to collaboratively construct the learning experience and new knowledge.
