Web Programming :: 2-2: Text Mess - 0 views

  •
This is the section of lecture 2-2: Text Mess that I added a comment to. I hope you will check out the link I added if you are interested in how you can incorporate what you know about design aesthetics to what you are learning about CSS.

    Added video comment.
  •
I added a comment on video 2-2 re: the div tag.
  •
Question on video at around 23:30: While different browsers don't all support the same features, will they at least support basics like flow and positioning in like fashion? I recently had a heck of a time with a positioning difference between Firefox and IE, and I still wonder if it was my code, or the way IE dealt with it.

Simple Hover | 13styles CSS Menus - 0 views

  •
This links to the menu bar template I used in my Chicken Kiev restyle with CSS. I like it because it has a clean modern look that doesn't look "button heavy". There is a fair amount of code, but most of it is straightforward. I made comments in my CSS sheet to help me remember what was going on. For webprog-2-a.

Syllabus Question 2 - 0 views

  • Jing.

When attempting to download Jing I received the following error message: 16 bit MS-DOS subsystem; The NTVDM CPU has encountered illegal instruction. Can anyone tell me what this means and how to get around it?
    • Alex Halavais

:/ beats me. All I can find on the web is "try the application again." It may just not like your system for some reason. There are some other free screen recorders out there, but I haven't had a lot of experience with them, unfortunately.
  • Notepad++
    • Chere B

When I download Notepad ++ do I need to download the Binary files and the source files in order for it to work?
    • Alex Halavais

You should just need the binaries...
  • For the Mac, you might want to try Text Wrangler
    • Zebeck Jillian

Is there a way to view the text you are working with in Text Wrangler as if it was on the web? I know you can with Text Edit on the Mac? I guess I don't see the value of TextWrangler, yet...
    • Alex Halavais

You can always view the file you are working on in a browser... Nothing wrong with TextEdit (as long as you change to Plain Text).
  •
Hi Dr. Halavais. How do I get a web host? I'm having trouble seeing if I have one.

I have a couple questions. They are highlighted within the sticky notes in the text regarding downloading problems also: When downloading Notepad++ do I need both the binary and the source files? When I attempted to download Jing I received the following error message: The NTVDM CPU has encountered illegal instruction. Can anyone tell me what this means and how to get around it?

CSS2 Reference - 0 views

This site is fantastic. I'm linking directly to the CSS reference page, but really the entire site is useful. It has HTML, Java, PHP, XML - everything! But in particular with this week's challenges, I found the CSS parts to be quite beneficial.

Google - AJAX APIs Playground - 0 views

Although we are not there yet, I found this site by Google to be very interesting. The fact that Google lets you play with their code and run scenarios is amazing. The code playground seems similar to what we see in firebug - you edit the code and see an output. It allows for Google to operate on a whole new level and interaction. Allowing people to freely test your code and learn from it, mow that's cool.

HTML Quick List - HTML Code Tutorial - 0 views

  •
A list of all the HTML codes, and then some. I looked over the list and had never seen quite a few (or at least never noticed them). I think its a good compliation of codes, as long as you know what you might be looking for, considering it *is* alphabatised.
  •
I found this website to be extremely helpful when coding HTML. It lists the HTML tags available and then provides descriptions, and examples of each being used. While other books or websites reference the tags use and try to explain the result, the examples on this site put into action what the user will see when you use the tag. Definitely worth checking out if you ever get stuck

CSS Restyle of Chicken Kiev - 0 views

  •
New and improved CSS version. Also found a menu bar template, fiddled with it a bit, and made comments as part of understanding how it works. Attempting to satisfy webprog-2-d and webprog-2-f.
  •
Very nice! If you stick the code for the menu bar *inside* the "wrap" div, I have a feeling it will work out better. Right now, when you maximize on a big screen, the menu goes a bit wonky. (Don't need to fix for the purposes of this assignment, but just so you know.)
  •
Thank you! I've been going a little nuts with a few things. :) The menu bar was easy to place in Firefox, but wouldn't position properly at all in IE. I managed to do some fudging, but don't like the result, as I later gave up margins:auto to pin things down. After all that, the two browser renditions still look a little different. Much to learn.

Here is my introduction. I had a negative visceral reaction to the lack of markup on this challenge, so I strayed from the directions and I added lots of

An accessible bar chart - 0 views

I'm always being asked to provide chart information for my business stories in the newspaper, but what if I could do it in CSS and make it pretty? That's what this programming tip provides, and it looks pretty cool, too.
  •
I think CSS charts are one of my favorite thing :). I am sure, someday, they will be superseded by built-in charting tags, but for now, I love 'em.

Crock Pot Chicken Wings - 0 views

Here is my updated recipe page; CSS version. This new one has a gray background for the main page and white to make the actual recipe stand out. The main title stands out against the other headers by color and size. All headers are in a sans-serif font while body text is a serif. Also, the links have a rollover feature and are a differnt color than the body text.

What is Pilates? 3-page site - 0 views

  •
Here is a simple three-page site about the Pilates method of physical conditioning. The site features a what is pilates page, history of pilates page and basic equipment page with photos and descriptions. Visitors are able to navigate to each of the three pages from one another. An issue I ran into was knowing how to gage the size of the images and how that affected the text size of the headings.
  •
Note that the <img> tag is self-closing--need to remember to have the closing slash on that. You also missed closing one of your <p> tags.

A staple of the raw food diet. Looks green, tastes good!
  •
So, great page. But :)... Tables for layout is bad news. There's no way to predict how it will be viewed on some devices, and it makes it harder (in some cases) to be spooned into a CMS. So, fine for now, but lose the <table> habit for anything other than tables as we move forward. (In this case, floating the image to the left would accomplish the same effect, but provide a liquid layout...)

[Valid] Markup Validation of http://marie.nfshost.com/recipe2.html - W3C Markup Validator - 0 views

  •
I took my recipe html file and tried cleaning it up. After numerous attempts to fix my code myself, I clicked the "Clean up Markup with HTML Tidy" button. HTML Tidy basically truncated my table-specific CSS and aggregated it at the top. I suppose I'll learn how to do this myself when I begin on Module 2. Instead of changing the original file, I saved a new one to show to the code difference at http://marie.nfshost.com/recipe2.html
  •
HTML Tidy is a lifesaver--as long as you look at the changes and can figure out why they have happened. (It also makes it prettier, if you use the "indents" feature.)

All the Presidents' Menus - 0 views

Though the assignment was to publish a three-page site, I got a little carried away and added more. This is just a fun site dedicated to (some) U.S. Presidents' favorite foods. From the home page, you can link to Obama, Clinton, Bush 41, Reagan, and Kennedy -- and back home again. Bon Appetit!
