The (semantic) web is one of the most promising application areas for SWI-Prolog. Prolog handles the semantic web RDF model naturally, where RDF provides a stable model for knowledge representation with shared semantics. It turns out that Prolog is also quite capable of providing web-services (HTTP), especially where it comes to dynamic generation of HTML pages and providing data for Javascript web-applications using the JSON serialisation.

The Semantic Web is the extension of the World Wide Web that enables people to share content beyond the boundaries of applications and Websites. It has been described in rather different ways: as a utopic vision, as a Web of data, or merely as a natural paradigm shift in our daily use of the Web. Facilities to put machine-understandable data on the Web are quickly becoming a high priority for many organizations, individuals and communities.

RPI's Tetherless World Constellation will address this emerging area of "Web Science," focusing on the World Wide Web and it's future use. Faculty in the constellation will explore the research and engineering principles that underlie the Web, will enhance the Web's reach beyond the desktop and laptop computer, and will develop new technologies and languages that expand the capabilities of the Web. Annotea is a W3C LEAD (Live Early Adoption and Demonstration) project under Semantic Web Advanced Development (SWAD). Annotea enhances collaboration via shared metadata based Web annotations, bookmarks, and their combinations. By annotations we mean comments, notes, explanations, or other types of external remarks that can be attached to any Web document or a selected part of the document without actually needing to touch the document. When the user gets the document he or she can also load the annotations attached to it from a selected annotation server or several servers and see what his peer group thinks. Similarly shared bookmarks can be attached to Web documents to help organize them under different topics, to easily find them later, to help find related material and to collaboratively filter bookmarked material.

URLs (Persistent Uniform Resource Locators) are Web addresses that act as permanent identifiers in the face of a dynamic and changing Web infrastructure. Instead of resolving directly to Web resources, PURLs provide a level of indirection that allows the underlying Web addresses of resources to change over time without negatively affecting systems that depend on them. This capability provides continuity of references to network resources that may migrate from machine to machine for business, social or technical reasons.
