DFDF - A Descriptive Approach to Data Standardization Data standardization is fundamentally prescriptive; no information system can solve the data integration problem without enforcing certain rules. But the challenge remains at where the rules should be prescribed. Most existing data standards prescribe the rules over the data itself. Excessive use of such an approach, however, leads to inefficient data representation. The alternative approach is to enforce the conforming rules over the description of the data so that data itself can be encoded in any manner. By developing ontologies for describing the data format and software libraries that can understand the ontology, this descriptive approach to data standardization will provide maximal flexibility in data representation while still ensuring the data interoperability.

A semantic wiki is a wiki that stores some portion of its data in a way that can be queried elsewhere. Typical uses of such data include querying it within the wiki (sometimes using standard query languages like SPARQL), aggregating it in displays like tables, maps and calendars; exporting it via formats like RDF, OWL or CSV; and reasoning with it, to calculate new facts from the given facts. Semantic wikis do not necessarily need to include standards or technologies considered part of the Semantic Web, although they usually do, to some extent.

Wikicat is the bibliographic catalog used by the Wikicite and WikiTextrose projects. It will be implemented as a Wikidata dataset using a datamodel design based upon IFLA's Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records: final report (FRBR) [1], the various ISBD standards, the Library of Congress's MARC 21 specification, the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules' The Logical Structure of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules and Resource Description and Access (RDA), and the International Committee for Documentation (CIDOC)'s Conceptual Reference Model (CRM)[2]. rNews is an approved standard for using semantic markup to annotate news-specific metadata in HTML documents. rNews has been developed by the IPTC, a consortium of the world's major news agencies, news publishers and news industry vendors. After a couple of months of development rNews is at production level now, version 1.0 was approved in October 2011. The IPTC welcomes feedback on how to improve the standard in the rNews Forum.

The Data Cube vocabulary provides a means to do this using the W3C RDF (Resource Description Framework) standard. The model underpinning the Data Cube vocabulary is compatible with the cube model that underlies SDMX (Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange), an ISO standard for exchanging and sharing statistical data and metadata among organizations. The Data Cube vocabulary is a core foundation which supports extension vocabularies to enable publication of other aspects of statistical data flows or other multi-dimensional data sets.

RDF is a standard model for data interchange on the Web. RDF has features that facilitate data merging even if the underlying schemas differ, and it specifically supports the evolution of schemas over time without requiring all the data consumers to be changed. RDF extends the linking structure of the Web to use URIs to name the relationship between things as well as the two ends of the link (this is usually referred to as a "triple"). Using this simple model, it allows structured and semi-structured data to be mixed, exposed, and shared across different applications.

Standard Upper Ontology Working Group (SUO WG)

The Virtuoso SPARQL query service implements the SPARQL Protocol for RDF (W3C Working Draft 25 January 2006) providing SPARQL query-processing for RDF data available on the open internet. The query service implementation extends the standard protocol by providing multiple output-formats alongside the standard XML results serialization. At present this uses additional query parameters, although content-negotiation will be supported soon.
