NYU professor Clay Shirky gave a fantastic talk on new media during our TED@State event earlier this month. He revealed how cellphones, the web, Facebook and Twitter had changed the rules of the game, allowing ordinary citizens extraordinary new powers to impact real-world events. As protests in Iran exploded over the weekend, we decided to rush out his talk, because it could hardly be more relevant. I caught up with Clay this afternoon to get his take on the significance of what is happening. HIs excitement was palpable.

Google today announced a new Internet-based communications and collaboration platform; Google Wave. While some of the details are still a bit sketchy, Google Wave looks to be an integrated communications platform that brings together email, chat, photo-sharing, and collaborative editing features. Google describes a 'wave' as "equal parts conversation and document" and the Wave team basically sees it as a replacement for email and other collaboration tools.

Ubiquitous Video not in size or stature, but the complete process of video from capture (capability built into phones, pocket cameras, Flip devices) to easy to use editing tools (some web-based, but full featured ones come with modern operating systems), to ease of distribution via video sharing sites YouTube, vimeo, etc all point to video being a common form of communication (and in terms of response via video), so that "writing" is now multimodal.
