The Department of Education's (ED) Office of Educational Technology today released a draft issue brief - Enhancing Teaching and Learning Through Educational Data Mining and Learning Analytics - representing the results of a months-long discourse among 8 academic and 15 industrial data mining and learning analytics experts conducted by SRI International. The brief, inspired by ED's 2010 National Educational Technology Plan (NETP), articulates the challenges and opportunities of Big Data in improving student outcomes and overall productivity of K-2 education systems. It focuses on three key research areas - educational data mining, learning analytics, and visual data analytics - and offers a set of corresponding recommendations, categorized by various stakeholders. ED is now seeking public comment on the draft.

After several years in which American diplomats have inveighed against Internet censorship in China, the (SOPA) proposals have inspired a bit of snickering. As it reads in the blog we have set up for the project, The Writing Researcher: Inspiration, Creativity, Fluency  aims to: 1. promote and support writing as a creative, scholarly and collaborative enterprise, 2. encourage discussion and peer feedback in a distributed, shared environment, 3. establish an international, inter-disciplinary, inter-cultural peer network.

Here's our justification, it turns out "Darts built the device, originally called Freedrop, as an easy way to share files with his students in class. "I was looking for a device that would allow users in the same physical space to easily share files,' he says. It was a hit, but he soon found that his students had other sharing plans. 'Students started sharing non-class related materials, their favorite albums and so on.'"

Sounds like the connection is a marketplace app, not a full part of the suite. Less inspired than possibility of G+ and hangout tech.
