"Open Cobalt Alpha is the first step in a long term project to make available to all people a free and open source platform for constructing, accessing, and sharing virtual workspaces for research and education. This 3D multimedia wiki technology makes it easy to create deeply collaborative and hyperlinked multi-user virtual workspaces, virtual exhibit spaces, and game-based learning and training environments that run on all major software operating systems. By using a peer-based messaging protocol to reduce reliance on server infrastructures for support of basic in world interactions across many participants, Open Cobalt makes it possible for people hyperlink their virtual worlds via 3D portals to form a large distributed network of interconnected collaboration spaces. It also makes it possible for schools and other organizations to freely set up their own networks of public and private 3D virtual workspaces that feature integrated web browsing, voice chat, text chat, and access to remote desktop applications and services."

Looks a good resource but looks like its school level. "The Chemistry Collective is a collection of virtual labs, scenario-based learning activities, and concepts tests which can be incorporated into a variety of teaching approaches as pre-labs, alternatives to textbook homework, and in-class activities for individuals or teams. It is organized by a group of faculty and staff at Carnegie Mellon University for college and high school teachers who are interested in using, assessing, and/or creating engaging online activities for chemistry education"

One-click access to Moodle files from within MS Office apps. Is this necessarily a good thing? Is it encouraging us to use Moodle as a filing cabinet?
  •
Office add-in for Moodle allows individuals to upload (and download and edit) files directly to moodle from office. "You no longer need to use your web browser when working with Office documents stored in Moodle" is their statement, which is interesting in thaqt everyone else is moving to the web as the platform!

Long post and comments on the vle vs the ple by John Fontaine, head of 'Platform Evangelism' at BB. Interesting that he appears to view the vle as a transmitter and instructor driven and I wonder if this then justifies the rest of his thinking on the role of technology.
