Learnable Programming - 0 views

"the goals of a programming system should be: to support and encourage powerful ways of thinking, to enable programmers to see and understand the execution of their programs. A live-coding Processing environment addresses neither of these goals. JavaScript and Processing are poorly-designed languages that support weak ways of thinking, and ignore decades of learning about learning. And live coding, as a standalone feature, is worthless.

"Let's get the harsh facts out there first - IT's in trouble, deep trouble. It has become way too reactionary. By IT I mean 'traditional' IT, the time honored 'old school' way of doing things. The pace of tech adoption is accelerating. By rights this should be a terrific opportunity for technologists and IT teams. In reality, old school IT has been shocked and awed by the consumerization of IT. "

  •
I was invited to speak on a topic near and dear to me during a session titled "Automate the mundane so you can focus on the impactful." During that session, I discussed ways that IT departments might streamline their services to provide more time to focus on business-leading initiatives as opposed to simply keeping the lights on.

Victorian Teacher Notebook Scandal - 0 views

  • As you can imagine, conspiracy theories abound. The department lost its previous Mac loving secretary with the change of government, and many worry that the department techs, who have always tried to pretend Macs just don’t exist, are now having their way and trying to push them out of the system altogether.
  •
But after a change to a conservative government that has a very poor track record when it comes to supporting public education, Victorian teachers are slowly awakening to a very different landscape. Perhaps the most rude awakening has occurred by way of the latest notebook lease offer from DEECD.

'Password fatigue' haunts internet masses as experts ponder the future of the password - 0 views

  •
"Sixty-three random alpha-numeric characters - in this case, generated by an online password generator - are as good as it gets when it comes to securing your virtual life. But as millions of internet users have learned the hard way, no password is safe when hackers can, and do, pilfer them en masse from banks, email services, retailers or social media websites that fail to fully protect their servers."

A Detailed History Of Social Media | Edudemic - 0 views

"Do you know who started social media? It wasn't Mark Zuckerberg. Heck, it was way before the Facebook era. It started, more or less, with CompuServe and Arpanet back in 1969. A couple years later, the first-ever email was sent. Imagine a time when we didn't have email and you had to actually chat with people on the phone or (gasp!) in person? It was a crazy time, to be sure."

It is late but am I excited, you bet I am! I have managed to get the Windows powered assessment and reporting software Accelerus that our school uses running on my OSX laptop. Check out the screenshot below. Was a bit tricky but Google was my friend as I tried out a couple of different ideas. The best guide I found was perhaps this one. It does require a knowledge of partitions and terminal commands but it worked a treat fo me. Along the way, I learned heaps and enjoyed the tinkering. I might have some fun and try to get Ubuntu Linux running again on this computer.

  • As educators, we have to realise that much of the criticism of ICT is to be expected if the subject is not taught properly. The reasons for it not being taught properly I am not going to elaborate on here. What is most important is that we redress the balance  by becoming the most dynamic, forward-thinking subject in the school you teach at.
