Last Call - Medium - 0 views

  • Contrary to the contrived ignorance of media reporters, the future of the daily newspaper is one of the few certainties in the current landscape: Most of them are going away, in this decade.
  • rom the advertiser’s point of view, the nation’s newspapers have become little more than a blue-bag delivery service, with a horoscope and enough local sports inside to get people to open the bag.
  • first, get good at understanding and presenting data. Second, understand how social media can work as a newsroom tool. Third, get whatever newsroom experience you can working in teams, and in launching new things.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • The death of newspapers is sad, but the threatened loss of journalistic talent is catastrophic. If that’s you, it’s time to learn something outside the production routine of your current job.

Howard Gardner: 'Multiple intelligences' are not 'learning styles' - 9 views

  •
A discussion of the difference between Multiple Intelligences & Learning Styles, as well as three tips for teachers: 1. Individualize your teaching as much as possible. Instead of "one size fits all," learn as much as you can about each student, and teach each person in ways that they find comfortable and learn effectively 2. Pluralize your teaching. Teach important materials in several ways, not just one 3. Drop the term "styles." It will confuse others and it won't help either you or your students."

Why good teachers leave teaching - 9 views

    "Why good teachers leave teaching"
  •
Interesting article. I have over thirty-five years' continuous experience as a teacher and librarian and am unemployable - I am simply "too expensive" to hire. Why spend $80,000+ on me when you can hire a graduate for tens of thousands less? I have knowledge, experience and skills that would be needed and valued by any school, but the Almighty Dollar rules nowadays. So this "good teacher" has left teaching, even though I still think I have much to offer. I am now studying in a field well away from education and planning a career in my new field. It's a shame that I have left education in this negative fashion, but I'm moving on, hopefully to bigger and better things.

This link was in Springfield High's resources - a wealth of resources updated now we see with an infatuation with glogster! The new google search option "wonder wheel" feature will help students both expand and narrow their searches in a visual way. Note that if you are running an old version of Windows /Internet Explorer, you will not see this option in your left toolbar under "Standard view."

How Twitter in the classroom is boosting student engagement - 3 views

  •
Focussed on university lectures, the article is a look at how Twitter is allowing for greater discussion. Alternatives for secondary schools are available, with one teacher I know using an online discussion board for students to post questions so the classroom (in theory) is quieter.

"iBooks Author is a great tool for creating interactive ebooks. Unfortunately, creating content with iBooks Author isn't always as easy as you might hope it is. Back in June I shared a free 110 page book about using iBooks Author . However, if video tutorials are more helpful to you I have found twenty six videos that you should look at."

Calendar of Events - 1 views

This site enables you to see what is going on in Australia and around the world. I use the Calendar of Events to see what is coming up and to also remind me of what is coming up. I am then able to prepare lessons or focus on an event and obtain information that is required, to share with the classes and my colleagues. Very, very helpful :)

Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge - 0 views

I describe this site to my classes as an online (electronic) reading log. I feel that they are able to understand it better if I use that phrase, as many children think that they need to log in and read books from the site.
