Is There Hope for Broadband Maps That Suck? « Fighting the Next Good Fight - 0 views

  •
onnected Nation recently announced an upgrade to their mapping application that's being used in S. Carolina. There's another story, though. One state resident saw on the map that his home had AT&T DSL service. But when Joe Roget called the company, "They said they had no idea what I was talking about and that whatever map data I was looking at was totally wrong," Roget reports to Stop the Cap! "The operator was frank with me, saying it was highly unlikely I would ever receive DSL from AT&T and the company was really not expanding DSL access any longer."

T oday's global economy is forcing executives, governments and consumers  to adopt a new way of thinking. The financial crisis and deep recession that  ended in 2010 caused a seismic shift that has reshaped the global business  landscape. Rural broadband: big telcos opt out & continue to lobby against, others see opportunity... - 0 views

  •
"The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is working to connect rural households to broadband through the Connect America Fund. The Fund provides capital to private sector companies in order to help shoulder the cost of building out broadband networks to those homes. However, two of the largest service providers have opted out of the the free money saying that they would prefer to focus their attention elsewhere. One provider, Frontier Communications is stepping up to the plate citing significant business value in bringing these households online, a view which raises more questions about whether AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast are creating artificial network scarcity in order to provide a better picture for shareholders at the expense of American competitiveness."

The Great Bandwidth Brawl - Technology Review - 0 views

  •
Networks are not in danger of running out of capacity just yet. Carriers have spent large sums buying up rights to the radio spectrum, and they're being creative about ways to squeeze more out of what they already have. (Exact speeds vary, but an LTE connection is typically 10 times faster than one provided by a 3G network.) The federal government licenses spectrum space, and wireless carriers and other companies have for many years bought up and hoarded licenses, anticipating the need to expand. But the largely unforeseen explosion in demand for wireless bandwidth, driven by the appearance of tablets and smart phones, has made it more urgent to ensure a supply for future use.  AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel says network traffic and the company's spectrum portfolio affect the kind of service that users receive in different areas. "We will continue to invest and innovate to make the best, most efficient use of available spectrum across our network," he says.
