How 'Deprogramming' Kids From How to 'Do School' Could Improve Learning | MindShift | K... - 0 views

"Holman also asked students to read "Sermons For Grumpy Campers," by Richard Felder, a graduate level professor who never lectured. In it, Felder describes his students grumbling that they hated group work and that it was his job to teach them, not the other way around. Holman's students said the complaints sounded like they came from kindergarteners or themselves and were amazed to find out the complainers were graduate level engineering students. "

MediumSounds Mashes Up Medium And SoundCloud To Feature Audio On Your Post | TechCrunch - 0 views

  •
"Medium does a lot of things well. Its easy-to-use interface for composing blog posts creates a clean, distraction-free environment for the reader. But one thing it doesn't do well is audio. Music, radio shows, and podcasts aren't a featured part of the product. London-based developer Roman Mittermayr put together MediumSounds so he could mash together what he liked about the Medium design with the musical content he posts to SoundCloud. His creation adds a missing element to what Medium offers - a way for sound to be a main feature, not just an embedded part of the post."

""Thank you," he wrote. "I love it when people are able to change their grammar based on a logical argument. I'm like that - in fact, I actually enjoy learning and adopting new grammar-but I frequently run into people so emotionally attached to their grammar that they will defend what 'sounds right' to the death.""

Smartphones Don't Make Us Dumb - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
Over the last decade, neuroscientists distinguished two systems of attention and associated thought. One is directed outward, as when you scroll through your email or play Candy Crush. The other is directed inward, as when you daydream, plan what you'll do tomorrow, or reflect on the past. Clearly, most digital activities call for outwardly directed attention. These two modes of attention work like a toggle switch; when one is on, the other is off. In fact, when attention is outwardly directed, the inwardly directed attention system is somewhat suppressed. Given the amount of time people spend with digital devices, that sounds ominous. Will we actually lose our ability to daydream? Let's hope not.

What Makes an Online Instructional Video Compelling? (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu - 0 views

  •
"A major affordance of video is the ability to produce multimedia elements and create dynamic learning artifacts. This may be self-evident, yet often instructional videos are produced without much design devoted to sound or imagery. Students repeatedly described the audio/visual elements of video as useful aspects of online course videos. Throughout the interviews, all participants evaluated charts, graphs, photographs, and other visuals relevant to the content area in positive terms. Conversely, a couple of students voiced their dissatisfaction with videos that they did not perceive as a value-add over text (they said videos they viewed did not include useful audio/visuals and that they could have just as easily read a transcript for the same information)."

Circles Sines and Signals - Introduction - 1 views

  • This text is designed to accompany your study of introductory digital signal processing.1 It’s an eccentric piece of not-so-rigorous literature with a preoccupation for explaining things using interactive visualizations, animations and sound.
  •
In the vein of Bret Victor's Explorable Explanations, this site uses several interactive visualizations to explain complex topics
  •
Great example. He even references Victor's Magic Ink essay http://worrydream.com/#!/MagicInk
