Tiny Letters to the Web We Miss - The Message - Medium - 0 views

  •
"Another type of newsletter has taken off recently, aggregating links like Rusty Foster's Today in Tabs, Alexis Madrigal's 5 Intriguing Things, and 5 Useful Articles by Parker Higgins and Sarah Jeong. This what Jason Kottke and Things Magazine have done for more than a decade on the web. Who? Weekly from Bobby Finger and Lindsey Weber -all about "wholebrities" the not particularly famous people who somehow make their way in celebrity gossip magazines - definitely would have been a blog ten years ago (or a zine twenty years before that). A couple of TinyLetters are written in a voice that I haven't heard since the early years of blogging. Dan Hon's Things That Have Caught My Attention and 6 by Charlie Loyd write commentary that is somewhere in between editorial and diary, for friends and potential friends. "

History professors and technology: Why can't we be friends? | More or Less Bunk - 0 views

"Students find most of our classes - especially large lecture classes - extremely boring and (at least to some extent) obsolete. That's not the same as saying that we are all boring necessarily. I used to love listening to good history lectures when I was an undergraduate, but this is a new era"

iTunes - Books - The Stack Model Method (Grades 3-4) by Kow Cheong, Yan - 1 views

  •
My friend wrote these ebooks for K12 learners. If you are interested in reviewing them, let me know. The Stack Model Method-An Intuitive and Creative Approach to Solving Word Problems (Grades 3-4) is the first title of a two-book series in Singapore math publishing, which comprehensively reveals the beauty and power of the stack model method as an intuitive and creative problem-solving strategy in solving non-routine questions and challenging word problems. Like the Singapore's bar model method, the stack model method allows word problems that were traditionally read in higher grades to be set in lower grades. The stack model method empowers younger readers with the higher-order thinking skills needed to solve word problems much earlier than they would normally acquire in school.

How a Tweet Turned Into the Best New Multiplayer Game in Years | WIRED - 1 views

  • One of the weirdest, coolest, most hyped multiplayer games in years is here, and it started with a tweet: “Contemplating building a game entirely with friends on twitter/fb. Totally open and ‘Mad Lib’ style. Could be fun or totally awful.” The tweet, posted by Mike Mika a little more than a year ago, was followed by another. It showed a crude red box among white and gray platforms. “Where to go with this?” it read. “I’ve started a new project, it draws a red box. Thinking platformer. #helpmedev.”

Seeing Like a Network - The Message - Medium - 0 views

  •
"Digital literacy is getting a sense of your networks. It's like learning a new city, invisible but beautiful, and baffling when you don't know how a new city works. But then, as you roam around, it can start to make sense. You get more comfortable, and in time, your rhythms come together with its, and you can feel the city. You can cross the street safely and get what you need from the city. You can make friends there, and find safety, and love, and community. We all live in this common city now, and we just need to learn to see it. We live in an age of networks, and it's an amazing age."

The Cult of Busy - 2 views

  •
"My friend had filled the day. He was busy. But the things that made him busy were the result of his own decisions. He didn't lack the time to read. He was simply choosing not to. Throughout the day, we face a number of decision points about how to spend time. Too often we approach these decisions passively, as if our hand were being forced, our free will compromised. Let me add one caveat: if you have young children, a brutal commute or juggle several jobs to make ends meet, you are exempt from everything I write in this piece. You are truly busy."

Social Networks for Academics Proliferate, Despite Some Scholars' Doubts - Technology -... - 0 views

"As a medieval historian with some decidedly old-school habits, Guy Geltner wanted to expand his online presence, but he shuddered at the thought of "friending" or "Tweeting" to get other scholars' attention."

Built on shorthand.com . Interesting example of assembling text, images, GIFs, and video in one space--all with a strong narrative element. What if course "modules" were presented this way? Traditional narrative structure, but multimedia elements.

GifGrabber is a dedicated app for creating GIFs on your Mac - CNET - 0 views

  • GifGrabber is useful to create an animated image of a cartoon clip you want to turn into a funny GIF to send to your friends, or a demonstration to teach a relative how to do troubleshoot an OS X issue. There are undoubtedly a thousand other reasons you'd want to create a GIF of whatever's on your Mac's screen.
